all of the top comments are wrong:

1. you don't pay VED on a lease
2. the mpg of this is officially 42.2mpg, maybe you will only get 30mpg, not sure; the engine was changed in 2015 from a much less efficient model, so old figures are totally irrelevant.
3. 8000/20 = 400, not 800, but anyway you maybe get 30mpg, rather than 45mpg on a diesel. 266 gallons @ £5.44 = £1436 vs 177 gallons at £5.55 £982. Around £40/month difference inf uel comments

Oh that’s a shame - were they apologetic about the mix up? I seem to have driven more miles than expected so far! Probably should have gone for 10k miles!

Yes, I sent them a tweet and got the following reply:

Checked with Mill and they confirmed my order will be with them early June.

I tried a moan too as my original delivery date was in March too. But alas it didn't work - I just kept being told it was an amazing deal. I couldn't argue anymore. What spec did you go for?

11 May 17 #265
OK just re-read my agreement and can see that anything over £185 road tax we'll need to pay :disappointed:

Although will have a moan as they originally quoted 22nd March as the delivery date

11 May 17 #264
Yes, mine is the same. Ordered but not in production - I think their system is quite glitchy. Registering for MyVolvo also gives you access to some deals - I just ordered the sunshades for my new XC60. Really excited about it arriving!

I got my order number from Mill just now. They say it's due in the UK on 22nd May... then a 5 day lead

I just registered the order in myvolvo but shows as just ordered... no production or build info... meh!

11 May 17 #262
Hi. I had to get a order number from MILL - you then register and add the vehicle on MyVolvo. The number isn't your reference number it's one you have to request from MILL. If you check your signed lease it will say that tax is included but only for the original rate (before 1st April) any increases would need to be paid by the customer. It increased mine by about £10 per month. Plus a bit extra on the deposit. It made me cross but I didn't have any choice. I guess it's still a pretty good deal.
alu355
11 May 17 #261
How did you link a MyVolvo account to the order? Is it based on the order reference number?
alu355
11 May 17 #260
I can't see how they can charge you for road tax when the lease agreement includes this.

24 Feb 17 #241
I had the following reply when escalating the issue to Customer Services manager:

Thank you for your email.

I am very sorry however I must confirm the information provided by Mill Garages is correct. We will of course honour our quote in terms of the price of the vehicle however any VED changes are out of our control. We must therefore reflect the higher rate for cars due from 1st April 2017. Likewise if the government had reduced the VED price, we would have ensured the saving was passed back to the customer and I feel our customers would rightly have expected that.

I’m afraid this VED change is out of our control and isn’t something we can waiver, it must be paid to the government.

I regret Mr Sparrow that there is nothing further we can do to assist. If you want to proceed, the higher rate of VED will apply.
sparrowandco1
23 Feb 17 #240
Just been told that my delivery date is 6.6.17 - a 20 weeks wait from when I ordered. Oh, and also I'll have to pay more now as the new VED charges will apply. So angry with Volvo and Mill.
karlie88

Thought this may have happened. If you can afford the extra few hundred pounds then fine, but I'd threaten to cancel the order. If enough people do this then the dealership/Volvo finance will absorb the cost.

23 Feb 17 #238
I've just recieved a double-blow of bad news! Delivery date is now 5th June and becuase of the VED changes coming into play 1st April, they've revised the quotation, some exta £10pm and the inital up another £70 or so!

They said that the January promotion generated orders in excess of 5000+.

This was with Mill Volvo.

All very annoying as I was getting ready to sell the wifes current car!

My signed contract was returned to Mill Volvo on Friday 27th Jan. On Friday 3rd Feb, I recieved the counter signed copy of the contractin in the post but wasnt give any other information. autoexpress.co.uk/car…tax

carwow.co.uk/new…060

It's increased cost for most car owners that buy new cars. I believe existing cars registered before the 1st April 2017 won't be subject to the new rates. Also if you lease a car you can work it so that the tax you pay is less, check the tables out.

18 Jan 17 #214
What do you mean 'you said; ? It's 2.7m isn't it yes or no? (along with the Range Rover) My point was that people moaning about £500 VED, which wasn't bad given its almost got the same wheelbase as a 9 seater mini bus, yet I never see more than 3 people in these. Usually a Mum and the token child. Obscene.
Chip on my shoulder? I stopped caring about English roads years ago. Worst in Europe and horrendous congestion thanks to the ghetto housing culture.

In fact I believe it's the ghetto housing culture (known as housing estates) cheap tacky samey looking houses, that fuels Britain's strong desire for luxury cars and its unique badge snobbery.

I wonder what happens if, say you bought a Range Rover Evoque that had a base price of £39,000 - then added extras (metallic paint, sunroof, bigger wheels etc) and push it over the £40k mark. Do they go on base price or final selling price?
dudedude
17 Jan 17 #211
Completely different engine mate. I used to have a Volvo S80 T5 (I got 25mpg); like your S40, it had a 5-cylinder turbo 2.5l.

This is a 4-cylinder 2l, and is obviously far more economical.

let's not forget that the plethora of diesel cars on the road was entirely down to Gordon Brown (the lummox) deciding to link road tax to CO2 output (rather than something sensible like miles covered) which meant loads of people bought diesel cars (more MPG and less road tax) as they have lower CO2. Massive amount more NO2 though. Bad science, bad policy from a truly bad politician. We'll not talk about gold, WMD or Iraq.

I'd like to see a peer-review on this. Like I have for the diesel particulate papers.
dudedude
17 Jan 17 #207
Absolute BULL. Why do you spread complete NONSENSE?

First things first

(a) this car is not on honestjohn, the T5 that is on there is the T5 r-design which this car is NOT, that engine was introduced in 2011 autoexpress.co.uk/vol…ign and rated at 198g co2, 33.2mpg
(b) the t5 that appears on honest john is NOT 17.5mpg, it is 23.1mpg honestjohn.co.uk/rea…08/
(c) the t5 on honest john used the 1990+ Volvo Modular Engine en.wikipedia.org/wik…ine
(d) this is NOT the Volvo Modular Engine, it is Volvo Engine Architecture first developed in 2013, and this variant was first sold in 2014/2015 en.wikipedia.org/wik…ure
(e) whereas the honest john car is 198g co2 33.2mpg, this is rated at 157 and 42.2mpg, so that's 20% less to start with.
(f) there is no way unless you drive like an utter c**t this car will do less than 25mpg, and I'd predict more like 30mpg
ezzer72
17 Jan 17 #208
That's bizarre - I swear it said 17.5mpg last night, now says 23.1mpg - wish I had taken a screen shot.

I think a lot of angry 'science teachers' from here must have added submissions to lift/change the average, seriously.

Shocking mpg for a modern moterway car.

I have just leased a sportage new auto in 2 spec. 720 and 23 payments of £240. Getting 40mpg out of first three tanks(will only increase). On the 12000 I do this Volvo would cost a extra £120pcm in fule alone!!
robertwilliamsmith
17 Jan 17 #203
Ouch, the tank on these is big but you'll be filling this up regularly at 17.5 MPG!!. Costs me £80 to fill up my R-Design Diesel. Goes 650 miles per tank at 47 MPG. At 17.5 MPG, a tank of petrol will go roughly 225 - 275 miles oO. Running costs would be prohibitive on this deal.

I'd recommend the car itself thoroughly, nice to drive, safe, comfortable, spacious, no major reliability issues. Get it in black looks much better!
ezzer72
17 Jan 17 #205
There has to be a cut off point somewhere, most people spending £40,000+ on a car are doing so for 'luxury' reasons.

EC Urban 58mpg
EC Extra Urban 67mpg
EC Combined 62.8mpg

also, on a used car i'd own i would not bother re-painting bumpers some lovely people keep scraping. with a lease arrangement however i presumably would be *heavily* punished financially after those 2 or 3 years for every single little scratch or dent as a result of other people's wonderful parking skills?

You're a lucky one never getting any break down, do you buy lottery tickets too? :-)

The problem is that the anti-lease peoples that come up with these "cheap motoring alternative" put no value on luxury, comfort (I guess the value of these are arguable) nor reliability (again if you don't need a working car, then maybe it is not very valuable) and always use a £0 maintenance and repair cost. E.g £2500 for a S40 T5, one would be looking at ~10 years old and 80-100K miles on the clock if not more. Keep it for 2 years and do the equivalent mileage of this deal ~15K miles = never ever any major repair bill nor even any basic service bills, no broken gear box, clutch, suspension, exhaust falling on the road, blown turbo, etc.

But yes, I agree, it is possible to get cheaper motoring with second hand car even including repair bills and depreciation.

17 Jan 17 #190
If you treat it like you were suggesting you treat a second hand car and hand the lease car back scuffed, scratched and dinged, then you will be hit by big charges.

If you look after it as you go along - then theres no big bills and no surprises at the end of the term.

There is a standard to which they must adhere when relating to damage they can charge for - ie, they cant charge for the odd stonechip, but if the front of the car looks like its been hit by a shot gun thats a different story.

Also, invariably its cheaper to get it sorted out yourself in advance of handing it back rather than allowing them to apply top end rates to the charges.

I'll see if i can find the link to the guide - although maybe someone else will post it first.

Hi all, I never lease a car in my life. So I need your kind advices. Is that true people saying leasing companies try to get money when you return the car( i.e.- scratches). If you use a car for three years there will be some dents. Scratches. Please reply.

Another brilliant idea from the government.

What car does emit more CO2 - 1.2tdi Fabia repmobile doing 500 miles every day, or my sports car used for an hour every odd weekend?
pgilc1
17 Jan 17 #186
that should have read "on average" not "non average". it won't let me edit...
dimi
17 Jan 17 #187
i don't follow... if you get a scratch and you "repair it" you will get a bill for bodywork paint, pride or no pride you get a bill... if you return a leased car you get a bill as well, but it will probably be dearer.

i was hoping someone who has experience having leased cars would share their experience of how expensive those tiny imperfections can be when you return the car. presumably one has little negotiating power at that point.

The new tax rate for all cars registered from April 2017 is £140, each car will also have a one off tax payment based on several factors, including value, emissions etc. So this would go from 180 per year to 140 per year, with probably a 500 one off up front payment.

Same here. Have the D5 SE Lux Nav manual as well, with beige leather interior. Probably the most comfortable seats you'll ever have in a car under £100K. Paying 300/month but it's worth every penny. For this price for the geartronic, it's an absolute steal. Buy one before they're all gone! Just factor in the cost of petrol for your mileage and you won't have any surprises.

17 Jan 17 #169
So far so good on both. The Volvo has just 51K miles, FVSH and one previous owner and is 2004. Its "the runner" as far as we are concerned. Ends up getting the mundane jobs - i use it to leave at the airport when i working away from home each week and to do the shopping runs at the weekend. The Porsche is the weekend toy. Its got 69K miles and has been trouble free in the six months since i got it and no bills pending. Its tucked up in one of our garages at the minute for the winter.

Leasing either of those would be a bit silly - the former just needs to be some old car performing a function for us. I wouldnt want the vehicle fulfilling that requirement for us to be a new car - it would be a waste of a new car and of money. The latter wouldnt be a candidate for leasing as its not used during the winter so we'd be paying for something all winter we dont use and monthly leasing costs would be sky high on a new one

The third car we have on a PCP deal. Its our main car and gets the most use - an A45 AMG Mercedes. We'll run it for the duration of its three year warranty and then chop it in for something else interesting and probably do similar again. We didnt go for leasing on it as we had an option heavy specific spec we wanted so leasing would have been pricey anyway. Plus if we want to keep it at the end of term we've the option of just paying the final payment.

To reiterate my view - different solutions work for different scenarios for different people. Theres no one size fits all solution. My way to drive one particular car wont be "correct" for everyone else and that doesnt make them wrong because they've done something different.

I'm not advocating leasing OR buying outright, i'm advocating supporting people picking the right solution for their particular needs and budget.

Then you'd be wrong. The new taxation system IS ridiculous. List rice of £39,999 and you pay one rate, list price of £40,000 and you pay £500 a year. If you buy a £40,000 car and get a 25% discount you STILL pay £500 a year tax. Buy a £39,999 car and get no discount and you dont.

Hows that sensible?

17.5mpg is not the real MPG of this car. It'll do 30+ on longish runs and on average well into the 20s.

Also, you do know thats just a sample pic, right? You dont have to have it in that colour?

Its quite simple really. If you were to buy a car and sell it after 2 years or 3 years, you'd have nothing to show for it anyway. Other than a lot less money than you started with.

Sorry to hear that. However, i'm not sure of the relevance to those who might take this deal because it suits their needs and they see the value in it?

Again - whats the relevance? Your needs are different from other peoples. That doesnt make them wrong - you do know that dont you?

You can yes. Thats what i am doing with 2 out of our 3 cars. Volvo S40 T5, bought for £2,500 and probably worth £2K in a couple of years time. Boxster, bought for £6,750, probably worth £5K in a couple of years time.

However that doesnt make everyone elses choices wrong.

I would say most people who buy or lease a new car do so because it suits them to and they like the hassle free aspect of having a new car.

Sorry your prejudices cant let you see that.

It not about narcisism. Not always.

Put simply, it can be cheaper to rent than own. Sure you can buy an old banger, I used to drive an old V70, and I'd look at these deals with the same "some people have money to burn" mindset as you, but then the clutch and DMF went and I had a £1500 repair. I ended up getting that fixed then sold the car for pretty much what the repair cost, and I was £5k down on the thing.

Contract hire gives you a car with warranty, a fixed monthly charge, and you don't have to borrow money (picking up finance charges) or lock up capital in something that's certain to lose money.

I'm presently doing it both ways, I'm hiring a Nissan Leaf, that's does most of the miles and it's the 'go to' car for nearly all of our trips. Leasing that is definitely cheaper than owning there. I also have a 10yr+ 520d estate for long runs and towing, that lost most of its value years ago. I'm feeling tempted to replace that with one of these XC60s, but I know deep down hanging on to the BM is going to cost less, but it needs to, it's an old car with a far greater chance of something breaking.

People have different circumstances, just understand that what works best for you isn't necessarily the smart move for everybody else.

The new 'tax' system isn't related to emissions anymore, some would argue it never should have been.

If you look at what I said again, I didn't say all 40k cars were luxury cars - my point was more that almost nobody truly NEEDED cars of such value, so they were usually a luxury rather than a necessity.

Passat diesel estate seems to start at about £24,000 btw - maybe the 'BiTurbo' variants could be considered a bit of a luxury, though not a 'luxury car'.

Well the basic BiTDI estate is £37K so it wouldnt take much to push it over £40K.

The point still stands - i dont think anyone looks at a Passat estate and thinks "wow, luxury car"

You can buy a five litre, yes, 5.0 v8 petrol Mustang, shipped half way around the world to your local Ford Dealer and not pay the £500 a year tax.

Or a 240BHP Jaguar XE sports saloon and still get the cheap tax.

Still seem like a sensible policy?

Try some leasing quotes & be honest about your mileage - as high mileage would seriously damage the resale value of the car. IE you will pay a lot more per month for 20k miles PA compared to 8k.
Lloyds a flex finance with a purchase option at the end of loan. You get to find your own used car & go from there.
for example £15k is 4.5% APR over 3yrs = £300 a month with a final optional purchase sum of £5750

Agree on the metallic "I'm not farting with confidence" brown colour but thats where it ends....

Comparing a £35k car with a £5k car is like comparing a night of passion with Taylor Swift vs a night of regret with Cletus' toothless sister.

If you were even just a bit unlucky, you could easily end up spending 70% of the lease deal total cost just to keep the £5k car on the road for 2 years. Not all of us are DIY mechanics and even those that are may not wish to spend their valuable time throwing spanners around at the weekend to save money.

Not to mention some of us spend a lot more time in our cars than others so will happily pay extra for a certain degree of luxury and gadgets to soften the level of soul destruction brought about by long motorway journeys.

I had heard the reason Diesel hybrids never really took off was due to several key factors.
- Diesels are more expensive to manufacture, couples to expensive hybrid systems means they would be prohibitively expensive to buy
- Diesel engines are also heavier, and would have a negative impact on the battery range.
- Diesel engines are also physically bigger (usually) so less room for the electrical components and much harder to design.

But, Diesel engine technology has advanced at a faster pace than petrol over the last 2 decades.
Mazda's new Skyactiv-D looks an interesting concept, which promises serious reductions on NOx and Soot.

mazda.com/en/…-d/

My own car uses Adblue, meaning that there are no NOx emmisions, only
Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide and Water.

Sadly, MPs have out-of-date information (like always) that stems from about 2005, Diesels produced today have never been cleaner.

Am I missing something...the initial tax on purchase is higher under the new rules from April 1st but thereafter each year it is a standard rate of £140 unless the value of the car on purchase is over £40,000, whereby it has an additional £310 subsidy to pay for 5 years thereafter and then it reverts to the standard £140 a year under these rules.

Facts that have been quietly brushed under the carpet, i'm afraid. Politicians have the agenda to be anti-diesel, yet they arent enforcing Particulate Filters to be fitted to the new gen petrols. It makes sense if you think about it, if the fuel burn is quicker on a GDI engine, then it will result in an incomplete burn - which creates soot - remember all those Chemistry lessons with a yellow flame Bunsen burner vs blue flame.

I'm afraid if things continue the air will be no cleaner in 15 years time than it is now (maybe worse if GDI engines become more widespread)

It's not that simple:
- you do not pay road tax on leased cars
- you do not have to worry about MOTs
- brand new tires
- all leasing deals include free breakdown cover
- better safety, better mpg (not in this particular deal, but 90% of the leasing deals posted are diesel cars)

When you factor it all in, you micht find you save quite a lot compared to an old second (3rd or 4th) hand car, that will almost certainly need attention, tires, might fail MOTs etc etc

Brown, Volvo, 17.5MPG 8000 annual miles - bargain!!

Whenever I see any lease deals and the total price you pay to not own a car I never understand it.

Well, I do. My sister is a shallow narcissist who has no appreciation of value and is quite happy living on the never never.

To me a car is a vessel to get from A-B in the dry. My local built up area there are traffic lights every 500 - 1000 metres.

You can own some very decent cars for £4-5000 that you'd be able to sell for £3000 after 2 years. If you are only doing 8K annually then how much damage is going to be done?

I understand that that a lot of people have to have a new car to show off to their neighbour's. A new, juicy brown Volvo would make me question their sanity!!

I am a lease convert after the 208 deal for peanuts last year. One factor you don't consider, many people are in receipt of a car allowance from work and the terms stipulate the car must be under a certain age, or in manufacturers warranty. Even if not the case, the 208 gti for 160 a month actually meant I was spending less month keeping the mileage down on my aging 16 mpg Scooby. it goes in 2 months though and still no deal comes close. The scirroco deal looks OK, but still not even close.

You get, I don't, don't speak for all of us.
If a petrol does just 17mpg v 40-55mpg fpr the diesel, there would need to be more than 2 times more fuel trucks to transport the fuel to the pumps if we all used petrol. And those trucks run diesel

The refinery pollutes less to produce diesel as well.

I'll start by saying that I am completely aligned to lease deals - I got the Golf R deal from here nearly 2 years ago and will shortly pick up an S Class Mercedes, on a lease deal, for stupid money per month. However, the OH wanted an SUV and I put the best lease deals, including the various Volvo XC60deals like this, to her and she eventually purchased the latest VW Tiguan that could not match even historical best lease deals; given the mileage, spec etc.

Working it out very roughly, it would've taken similar deals to lease the vehicle over 6 years and she'd have been left with nothing (given lease costs, servicing etc), but at the end of it she's got a vehicle that she owns and doesn't worry about mileage constraints and is still worth something after the 6 years.

Overall, in normal deals then lease is the way to go, but there are better deals if you have the cash to purchase and I'm glad I did it that way for the OH's vehicle. However, maybe that's coming from someone that got an amazing deal on a pre-reg vehicle.....

Apologies. Diesel is only available on 36 month lease.

The same dealer is showing a price of £314 a month on their website

Check your maths. 8000 miles @20mpg is 400 gallons. :-)

Honest john diesel mpg is approx 40mpg depending on gearbox.

Diesel is only £18 + VAT more!!!!!!
blacksky200
16 Jan 17 #44
is the deal still on?
I only see:
24 months (6+23)
8,000mpa
£1,253.23 initial
£208.87 (Inc VAT) Monthly rental

what am i doing wrong?
dealchaser72
16 Jan 17 #43
If £40 pm more, diesel would be cheaper if 40 mpg achievable.
pawciog
16 Jan 17 #42
I am pretty sure I saw diesels on the same site for around £40pm more, so indeed might be cheaper overall
Dan_999
16 Jan 17 #41
I would say these deals might get better, new model expected to be revealed in March which might mean a lot of these to shift before it's release.
alu355
16 Jan 17 #40
Thanks, am considering going for this. Do you know if any colour is available? Also any idea on lead time?
PhoenixRising
16 Jan 17 #39
Got a quote from Mill Volvo. Terms are slightly different but better in my opinion. They quoted me 6 + 23 @ £221.34 per month + £664.02 initial. Total cost of £5754.84.
thermomonkey
16 Jan 17 #38
Oh my.... That's not good.
dealchaser72
16 Jan 17 #37
8000 miles per annum at 20mpg = 800 gallons of jungle juice. At £5 per gallon = £4k. 40mpg would be £2k. So comparable deal for diesel would be £83.33 per month more, £281.77 per month if diesel deal would be equivalent. Still a cheap car. Just need to factor in the fuel compared to the overall cost. Not bad for a 35k car

Apparently, brown is currently the most popular colour for new vehicles. Used to be black a few years ago, then white more recently and now, brown.

I have the Diesel D5 of this and paid a lot more before they started discounting it. Hands on the best vehicle I've driven in 20 plus years of motoring - and I've driven a fair few new ones via leases.

Doesn't sound so bad if you say it will be between £40-£50 of petrol a week.

Sounds about right for a 2 tonne vehicle with 245bhp and a 0-62mph in 7.2s.

Very good, especially as its an auto and there are next to no good deals on autos.

Might pop to a dealer to have a look at one.

not one of the dealers stand over the cost advertised on that site. had two quotes for a Kia Sportage today and they were approx £40/month higher than advertised. false advertising!!!!!!
ezzer72
16 Jan 17 #21
17.5mpg according to Honest John's Real MPG site.

A lot of car for the money without a doubt, and heat added, but remember it's a 9 year old model now, with a new one imminent.

Enjoying the car?

16 Jan 17 #14
If you are thinking of buying a car like this then I suggest you do so before 1st April when the road tax will increase from £180 to an eye watering £500 !

Cars registered before 1st April will also likely command a much higher residual value as a result of the ridiculous road tax increases.
