I don't get why people are getting their knickers in saying this is a bad deal or timpson this and that, unemployed should pay.

Its a generous thing to help those on the bones of their **** looking for work, remember a lot of ex military officers fall into this category too when they have been dumped by the MoD.

I wish more retailers would make small meaningful gestures like this, would show we were a kind caring society after all.

I am as cynical as they come but this is a good thing from Timpsons.

I've always been impressed by the service I receive in Timpson and have a lot of respect for the company giving people a chance who otherwise would be cast onto a scrapheap. As posted above - we could keep kicking people down and in a cycle of repeat offending (and the cost that brings to society as a whole) or you could give people an opportunity to kick-on and lead productive lives. Helping-out people in general trying to get into work is also a noble cause.

In today's era of corporate greed and tax avoidance it's refreshing to see a company giving something back to those in need.

I for one hope I have done my last job interview and certainly hope I don't ever become unemployed, however if I was unlucky enough and this helped me find a new job I'd be grateful.

You can wear a ten grand suit in court, but it is not evidence in anyones favour without a few million in the bank to back it up to prove you are not a hard on criminal IF you have at least one registered multi million pound business where you are a director LOL

communicating is not trolling, someone asked a question...I expanded my own experience on that question given it is a fast food industry standard - having 'a go' at someone (esp on their own personal experience/s) IS trolling

You cannot be THAT naive!
It is part of MANY peoples make up to abuse any system...... whether they are multi-millionaires avoiding paying taxes, or pregnant Nigerians coming to Britain to make free use of our NHS, or MPs abusing the expenses scheme.
They will also 'justify' their abuse - for example, someone who is disabled, not got an interview for a job, but has a family wedding ........ why should they not get their suit cleaned for free?
What about someone on NMW who has an interview for promotion - why should they not get their suit cleaned for free?
Someone who is charged with a crime.... why should they not get their suit cleaned for free - to give them a better chance in court...?

The original reason a government was put in place was not to get you a job. In a capitalist society - change and opportunity comes from business and this is a business doing just that.
Id hope my tax was not being squandered because you couldnt be bothered to make an effort in an interview.

I have a leather shoulder bag, sort of a laptop carrier plus some extra room for putting other stuff in, anyway, the strap is held on with two buckles, and one of them broke (with age), I went in there, showed them, they replaced it with something similar, and when I asked how much and the chap just said "just put whatever you like in the charity box instead". Again, not something you hear very often, made me smile.

A food allowance per the hour. Personally I would sue, that food allowance can only be used in Maccas - that is not food, edible yes, food no. It's called junk for a reason.

I worked at Burger King when 17, long ago but such poor wages (there was no minimum wage then & I got paid more than minimum wage is set at now for a 17 yr old) you are thankfully for free food even if it is junk.

I used to spend £2 on a 'snacks' that were on promo when I got to work as a meal and my further meal were off the allowance, I even used to do a few hours when asked extra on shift to have enough allowance for another full BK meal just to eat on the way home, every penny I made over the rate of unemployment benefit was deducted by housing benefit but at least I managed to eat enough per day with the BK food allowance.

Thank the gods them days ended 20+ years ago, doing overtime for no actual benefit due to housing benefit reductions but only a free food allowance - such thing is, now even with minimum wage it is absolutely legal for companies to do it to under 25 year olds ??

Shocking!

Good for you! Having dealt with people with Aspergers I find them very good at focusing on technical parts of jobs when they know what they have to do, they become transfixed by doing the job at hand, and doing it well - unfortunately like socially, business wise customer facing roles are not really for Aspergers sufferers because social cues are limited - I know a IT professional and a engineer who excel at work and are very highly regarded by managers up the chain, but socially find basic life and it's skills impossible, esp communication to fellow humans which we non Aspergers/autistics take for granted.

Aspergers is high functioning autism and it makes most very high functioning in work mode. The ability to focus and get things done without other humans interacting/distracting with them is amazing - generally outshine other staff.

Good for you mate!

The clothes do not maketh the (wo)man - the fact you let yourself be convinced into a job role at Poundland says everything, low margin bulk selling jobs are not a company most can hack because most people can't handle stress in a positive way. And you went for the interview, severely undercutting yourself short if you ended up in a better job with better pay.

Desperation comes from not being able to handle situations/stress. Poundland is a desperate job.

Good you to some degree you managed to not get stuck in that rut and evolved to better.
seaniboy
16 Jan 17 #52
Free dry cleaning for all? That would undermine the business... you have always been PAYE obviously because that's where you intelligence level lies, not there is anything wrong with that, companies need compliant poorly educated staff who have no clue half the contract they signed is overruled by legislation. The worst contracts are usually the poorest paid.

But it laymans terms, if your kids came to you everyday wanting £20 each but your income was less per month, is that sustainable for you without running up year on year debts ?

Congratulations you have learnt the first rule of running any business, regardless of situation - apply common sense! If you can't apply such you apply for a PAYE employment role where you are dictated and delegated your duties as guidance every day from superiors (who have a little better understanding of the corporate chain than yourself, and on and on...)

Yikes, not really a nice gesture just pretty cheap/clever pr and probably a little nudge nudge/nod/wink to someone further up the food chain for future favour to be collected as and when. aargh, there be kickbacks over yonder.

If it was truly such a wonderful generous act they should surely take a person at their word when inquiring if they were unemployed and had an interview rather than requiring any proof at all.

Assuming that the person in need turning up for a free suit cleaning is unworthy of trust straight off the bat is the bigger issue. Another day in paradise.

Timpsons are one of the few decent employers. Sure they benefit from marketing and PR but the offer is genuine. I'd rank them up there with decent employers such as Lakeland.

Timpsons genuinely employ Category D offenders. They also give all their employees their birthdays off, free use of holiday home lodges around the country, free use of the company limo when you get married along with a £100 and a week off work.

So for those that belittle them, you need to see the wider picture and to see that they are wholly magnanimous.

15 Jan 17 #45
how much does it normally cost to get a suit dry cleaned?
seaniboy
15 Jan 17 #44
Its cheaper to send a child to a private elite boarding school a year than hold a prisoner at Her Maj Pleasure (we pay not her) - so why do we give Child Tax Credits and state schools funding that by large are poor investments that teach state financial dependency ? Labour spend too much on public services, Tories cut to much but nobody reforms the state but tinkers round 60 year old models of (mis)management at our cost - yet England keeps voting them in ? Try liberate yourselves and country with some democracy for a change from a two team monopoly game for decades.

Nice to see a company go against the grain, even if it will be a tax loss to Customs & Revenue - because its cheaper than DWP handing out money for new suits/interview clothing, just buy one from a charity shop who will knock the price down if you explain you are unemployed and need it for a interview, most will as they got it free, then free cleaning of it.

I will give my next purchase of keys etc to Timpson.

Horses for courses and a common sense approach. Every person going for a job interview should attend clean and tidy. 99% of office vacancies would obviously want the applicant to turn up in a suit. Labourer or perhaps a cleaner, not so.

HOT BTW - Brilliant marketing and a nice gesture. I for one will pop my suits in Timpsons from now on as I like dealing with companies that run on that sort of ethos.

I fully understand what led to me not getting that job with Poundland at an interview some 6 years ago. I don't come across well in interviews as I have Asperger's Syndrome. As I said, I'm fortunate enough to now have a reasonable graduate-level job, which is my first job I started at 32 (just to give you some idea how many interviews I might have had "thanks, but no thanks" from). To get that job I had to ask for unpaid work experience which subsequently led to a paid job. I know that if I lost this job, in addition to dealing with the current Government's treatment of the unemployed, I'd be getting knocked back after interviews again and again - even minimum wage, zero hours contracts etc.

Likewise I've become aware of many cases where clearly the wrong person has been selected for the job. They have the gift of the gab so give a good interview - but when it comes to the job don't have a clue. People think they know everything after talking to someone for 1 or 20 minutes. Maybe that works for you, it doesn't for me. If you want to call it excuses and blame, then so be it.

The deal is a nice gesture, but in an ideal world people would be judged on what they can bring to the job - not what they wear.

Wow, what a nice marketing tool. Heat for the offer and when I'm next over for a funeral I will make sure my suit is dry cleaned at one of their branches as a show of support. Been unemployed (free will, didn't clam anything, never have), every little helps.

"You don’t need a voucher to receive this support just pop into your local Timpson and have a chat with our colleagues who will make sure that you’re off to a genuine interview. So long as the items you bring in are for a genuine job interview we’ll help you on your way"

Good Idea but personally I rather not have to go into Timpson and discuss my personal business with their Employees. Imagine being interrogated by some over zealous manager in front of other customers just to get your suit washed
