I'd mainly want to play this for the story, visuals and music. Can you use any cheats on the steam version to make battles easier?

The battles will get easier once u gain a few levels and get some decent skills / figure out the combat.
Keep playing and hang in there it's not that hard once you progress.
Still a bit harder than the latest ones though as the controls have aged a bit.
Amazing game, worth your time if this is your type of thing!

Since there no side movement the combat is quite challenging during boss battles compare to the new tales games. Still remember the Dragon Boss from the coliseum ^^

FYI people reporting 30fps framelock and crashing/bugs on steam port. Might be better to play via emulator at 1080p 60fps - if you own the game of course.

I can never completely get to grips with the battle system in Tales games. I really want to love these games but I always get destroyed by the first tough boss I face.

The battle system is one of the best things about Tales of Symphonia because it actually takes skill and practise to get good at it. For those who don't know it's an active battle system for the main character with blocks, attacks and special moves a lot like a beat 'em up. The other characters all act according to a pre-selected AI setup but you can also pause the game mid-battle to select specific actions for them from a concise menu and handle difficult situations. You can make any character the controllable character depending on who you like using and they're all quite different. It's probably the best battle system in any jRPG if you're happy to put a bit of time into it.
