Edit - Out of stock from Laptops direct, but still available from Debenhams plus
4 channel complete diy CCTV System, comes with everything you need including hard disk, LCD monitor, 4 night vision cameras, cables and power supplies. Model is DVR4-1525, Maplin is selling exactly the same kit for £250
Good basic CCTV system for a DIY home security system:
Four-channel security kit with widescreen, 960H resolution. 7-inch monitor allows you to watch your cameras live. Four clear-resolution 650TVL cameras with powerful night vision up to 25m. 500GB hard drive capacity to store up to 30 days of recordings • IP67-rated weatherproof cameras for indoor and outdoor use. Motion detection digital video recorder (DVR) with alerts sent to your smart device. See what’s happening live and receive alerts on your 3G/4G capable smartphone or tablet (including iPhone, iPad & Android devices) using the free SwannView Link app
Resolution isn't necessarily everything when considering a moving picture but will be critical when viewing a stills as will focal length and field of view, which all should be considered. A high pixel count will allow for either a wider field of view or greater focal length allowing the user to enlarge an area and still produce a usable picture. If, however, you don't need this then a lower resolution or focal length is just as good. Just depends what you want from the system.

People must remember that resolution isnt everything, at work we have some old cctv cameras but the image is so sharp its unbealivable
You can get junction boxes that you mount the camera on top, although it is an expensive way to do it eg:- https://youtu.be/qTBUaRNUECo?t=275

So you have the connection on the outside of the building?
Can you link a junction box so I get the idea of size

Use cat6 cable and crimp ur own rj45 Ethernet connection after. It's so simple... U will
Only have to drill like a 10mm hole but yes l, a IP junction box will need to be used (in most case) Coming from a Cctv installer. Hikvision is also my recommendation

yea I know what you mean... but im trying to find alternative cameras with a female end directly in the cam rather than on a wire..

22 Jan 171#31
im talking about camera end... I don't really want the join on the outside of the wall

With reference to the cable hole size on the hikvision cameras after you have fed the cable back in side simply seal the hole with some sealant and then mount the camera over the hole to cover it. You do not want to use any sort of junction box or have any cable showing outside of the building......

Personally have this set up, I got it on offer but would recommend even at this price. We had a whole car worth of smashed windows and tyres done in along with 4/5 other people on our road, police had nothing to go by as we live remotely in countryside with no cctv, so getting this was a no brainer really. (Probably should have had it before but living there for 10 years with no issues we didn't see it necessary) There's also an app which you can get on your phone which gives you a live stream and playback where ever you are etc. which is great when away on holiday.
Put this up for a mate last year and it is excellent VFM. Good images at night. We had a dodgy camera and they sent one out FOC. Found out there was the tiniest spec of dust on the lens . He now has a spare. No need for any holes bigger that the Ethernet. If its a problem get a crimp. Easy enough.
u can put the cat5/6 connector on after the cable is through.

you can always have a waterproof junction box outside to hide all joints but I see where you coming from.

can anyone recommend a good set of POE cameras for decent price?

I am also looking... been looking at hikvision but I won't like the fact the female end of the ethernet cable is fixed to the camera, means you have to drill a 25/30mm hole to fit the housing through.. really annoying

Would also be interested to find a decent system.

The cameras aren't worth it. Should something happen and you need to give evidence to police/court. The resolution once blown up is horrendous and you won't identify anyone.

Looks reasonable. If you have a search on YouTube you can see comparison videos based upon the 640TVL cameras

debenhams plus is same company as laptops direct.
please note if you need to return it for any reason including faulty unit( I was told by customer service) you will be paying from your own pocket as I found out hard way.
I purchased nvr kit with 2 cameras. when it came to install them I realised they had so narrow viewing angle 55° that they barely covered few meters across.
when I looked for another camera to add to system I couldn't find and they don't sell. had to return in the end at my own cost.
cameras to go with this kit are available from everywhere though and cheap but you wouldn't recognise someone if you didn't know them.
My friends cameras was smashed and despite it being so close to camera we couldn't recognise the face.

Yes, that's correct.

Not with this system, but with system that use AHD, CVI, or HD-TVI instead of CVBS can.
It's not possible to use a 1080p camera using BNC. BNC is composite video, normally maximum resolution 576i. 960H enables up to 700TVL.

22 Jan 171#15
960H is the DVR recording resolution, 960 wide by 576 high (PAL). It is a widescreen version of D1 (720 x 576) or 576p if you like.
Analogue high-def systems that record at 720p aren't much more expensive, and 1080p isn't much more.
1080p only refers to the resolution of the monitor it can support.
Still, according to Maplin, at least the cameras have 1/3" sensors, and sony effio at that.

I was going to ask, isn't the resolution/picture quality determined by the camera(s)? So if you needed one area to be monitored in particularly high definition you could buy an appropriate camera just for that area?

22 Jan 171#10
960H. Nahh thanks
PeterGammage to linhang90
22 Jan 171#11
The 960H refers to the hours of recording. The cameras are 640TVL and it says picture quality can be 1080p

I wouldnt bother the camera quality is very poor so no point wasting your money best spend on a decent 1080p setup !

Can you explain? The cameras give decent quality, enough to be able to see who's on your property.

They are standard BNC, I've bought it and works a treat (at least with my simple in house test - next weekend I'll set it up outside)

problem with this brand they've recently made their units only work with their own cameras if you want to replace/extend the system; can't be certain if that's the case with this one but for something which you want in place for a while but may need to replace due to damage etc. (as I've done with one camera in my setup), that's something you don't need really.

on the link the op has supplied, it is standard BNC connectors so any camera with a phono plug and a BNC adaptor will work.
I have an older one and use a car reverse camera from eBay as a door peephole viewer.
edit. didn't even notice you get monitor with this and voted it hot.
