I received my 64GB mi max from geekbuying recently having tried a redmi note 3 Pro. Very pleased so far, since purchased another redmi note 3 SE for my daughter to replace her faulty smart ultra 6.

The issue with geekbuying is that they'll accept your order whether they have stock or not, and if they have no stock you're just left waiting till they find some stock.
I ordered my 32gb Mi Max from Aliexpress early December, £134 delivered in 21 days standard delivery, potential 10% quidco as well - but don't hold out much hope for the cashback.

I bought the mi max 2 weeks ago and it's amazing. Huge battery, very quick phone even with multiple apps open. Go for it, you won't regret it.

Just install the Lineage custom rom.
No international version of this, it misses the band for 4G that O2 use (possibly band 20 off the top of my head.)

There is no version that supports band 20. I would go for a version that is advertised as 'Official Global Rom' As you're going to get a clean version that will receive updates OTA.

Although if you're going to install a custom rom get whichever is cheaper.
I'd recommend installing a rom by the way, MIUI is horrible.

Off the top of my head, mi5s has a Snapdragon 821 SoC and a different camera. But, I'm happy to learn of any other differences.

Sorry for what may appear to be a silly question. I am a little confused, who is best to buy from, Ali express or this one, I'm not sure what the difference or benefits are, can any body please advise.
The phone is excellent, only thing that could be better is the camera in low light, but that's the case for most of these Chinese phones.
This has the global software so gets the updates direct from xiaomi.
If you've not used aliexpress before, when you set up a new account you should get a $10 discount voucher you can use (might need to be a new account using the aliexpress app).
Aliexpress aren't a retailer, it's a marketplace. Once you order, aliexpress gives the seller some time to dispatch the order, or the order can be cancelled and you get a full refund. In my case they had 5 days, the phone was dispatched after 3 days.
Aliexpress hold your money from the seller till you confirm you've received your order, so it's in the sellers interest to send the phone asap.
I'd recommend using the aliexpress app, I found the tracking really good, until the Royal Mail get their hands on it - as it's signed for only so it'll just turn up one morning about 4 days after arriving in the U.K.
On aliexpress, there's a U.K. Warranty charge, that gives you 12 month warranty with a company in the U.K. You can get rid of the warranty charge by changing your location on their wesite/app to USA and then ordering as normal.
Standard delivery is free, and almost always avoids import charges, any quicker delivery service will likely incur import charges.
Delivery of my phone was 21 days from ordering to delivery in rural north Scotland.
I did go via quidco, so could get 9.9% cash back but I'm not that confident it'll get paid (cash back is actually tracking as £17 as the quidco transaction got confused as the order was in us $)
I believe three use Band 20 mainly for the supervoice service.

It doesn't support band 20, I think this might have the biggest impact for the O2 network and resellers that hang off that network (test, giffgaff, etc) I'm on BT (EE) network and have experienced no issues.
And lastly, if you do order and decide it's not for you, you'll easily sell it for more than you paid on eBay.

Typing this on an MI5s 4GB / 128GB with the xiaomi.eu ROM, very impressed.

It was stock roms that lead me to MIUI. I had a Nexus 5, and tried loads, the last of which was MIUI. A month later I bought my first Mi phone.

I am really tempted with one of these phones but I read in other threads about a lot of phones coming with spyware/malware which has really made me paranoid about buying anything other than one of the "big name" phones (Samsung Galaxy etc.) what should I be looking for when it comes to the safety of these devices? Are there checks I should be running (android anti virus?).
Also are these fully android compatible? By that I mean can I run most apps and use google pay?
Sorry for all of the questions but I'm trying to get into android phones after having iPhone then Windows Phone for years so this is all new to me and there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable people around here.

I would say, and some will disagree, get one that says it has 'official global Rom'. That way, you're less likely to get any malware. You'll also get updates, and Google play etc will work out of the box. Ask for a sealed box from the seller. You don't need anti virus, it just saps resources and doesn't do much. I have this phone, and Android pay works perfectly - I've used it twice today.

I was looking at this one from the same site [Official Global ROM] Xiaomi Mi5 as I read elsewhere that it's a safer bet to get the official ROM, a little more expensive but I don't really want to start my relationship with android by trying to flash a new ROM on a device I have little knowledge of and not really having confidence in the result.
Thanks for the info (especially the android pay part as this is a big requirement in my purchase).
Just one more question, will these update to the latest version of android?

Update to Android N is in the works. This is a cracking phone (it's what I'm typing this on), you won't regret it. FYI, if you don't mind the wait, the same phone can be got from China for about 30 quid less.

That's the one I got, and the deal I posted at the end of November. I haven't done anything to mine in the way of flashing etc, just sim in and away. You'll love it, and you'll never buy on contract again, I know I won't. When it arrives, you'll need to make an adjustment in settings to make android pay work. Go to settings/more/default wallet. Change the wallet type to HCE. Once you've done that, you'll be golden.
