Cheapest sim free I can find is £300 so approx £110 saving on that price.

119.99 up front then £3 a month for length of contract is the tariff you need to select. You might need to click show more to find this tariff.

You can choose any tariff this time so I would advise going or the 500Mb plan with 119.99 up front but the general jist of o2 refresh deals applies:

1.Receive device in the post / Collect your phone in store.
2.Request unlock - most succesful way I have seen to do this is through the my o2 website or app
3.Once unlock code is received unlock your phone (approx 48 hours) - some people move to step 4 straight away as soon as requesting the unlock code but I have waited when doing it in the past.
4.Ring up and pay off the device plan but cancel the airtime contract saying you think the device plan is great value but you have seen better airtime deals elsewhere. This is the most difficult step dependant upon who you talk to at o2 and if they understand the o2 refresh deal properly or not.

At worse you might get charged for 2-3 days of the airtime contract whilst you get the unlock code by waiting - which should be under £3 on the 500Mb plan

Sometimes the process has been known to go wrong and you do have to go through getting a refund but this has happened to me once in four deals (I change phones a lot) but I managed to get the money refunded back to my account before I was billed so I didn't get charged the full airtime contract and then have to wait to get my money back.

I know this phone isn't for everyone especially since they removed the dust and waterproofing but I am after a small (fairly) powerful android phone and this seems to be the only one that even comes close to being that. All the reviews say the 650 processor is fine even for top games due to the 1280 x 720 res on the screen. I had a z5 compzct but sent it back due to the overheating issues which is why I assume they have gone for a lower spec processor this time.

I've got an X Compact as my main phone and I'm very happy with it, I got it to replace my Z3 Compact. I miss the waterproofing and that the X Compact doesn't have ANT+ support as I was using it as a cycle computer/exercise tracker with Strava.

It's really the only phone of this size that you can buy that has good support and is reasonably powerful. The 720p screen resolution at this size form factor is pretty irrelevant. It also has good support as currently I have Android 7.0 and the January Android security updates where my partner who has a Galaxy S7 is still on Android 6 and the December security updates. I did try the S7 myself for a week or two before giving it to my partner but I really couldn't get on with it, the thing is physically too big and the Samsung special with the software made it awful in my opinion, but the X Compact is fairly close to stock Android which is a big benefit and with light use you can easily get 2 days battery life.

If anyone can point me at a phone that is the same physical size as the X Compact that comes with good software support, good camera and good battery life, 3GB RAM and a fast CPU then I'd really like to know what and where.

When I looked at the reviews for this phone most of the reviewers utterly missed the point of it, they always compare it against phones that have a physically huge QHD screen which if you don't want a giant phone in the first place is a pointless comparison.

If you got this deal, go online and cancel any Telefonica direct debits.
We got an email saying we were getting the remaining airtime balance taken out next week (270).

Phoned up ,she says it's a problem with them and asked me to cancel the dd to save any refunds etc

Was it this phone? I think you might have cancelled the contract, rather than the airtime and paying off the device. Cancelling the contract means you still have to give 30 days notice and pay one months contract (£17) plus paying of the device (£72) but this would still only come to about £210.

Which phone/deal did you get?

Just tell them you don't want a contract, you just want to buy off the phone bit and cancel the Airtime. I don't think you need to trick them as they will be perfectly aware that people do this.

The contract deal isn't still available. You needed to select a contract with a low Device Plan (£3) so that when you pay it off it only works out at £72. At the moment, the lowest looks like £8 (x24).

OK, to dissipate panic: I've just talked to an agent via live chat. They said that as soon as they get the code from the manufacturer, they will send it to me by email and that this should still happen within 7 days of placing the original request. So maybe this explains why they set a maximum of one week. I guess I'll just have to sit and wait.
guyarg
4 Feb 17 #52
Oh, this seems to be the beginning of an ordeal. I've just received the following message:

Now we have to be careful, because if we don't get the code in the next few days, the 14-day cooling-off period will expire and that means we'll have to give a 30 days' notice to cancel the airtime plan, so we'll end up paying two months' airtime.

To be honest, I was very hesitant about this deal but thought the savings were worth it, now not sure any more. I'm now even considering returning everything before the 'change your mind' period ends... :-/

I'd definitely query this with them. It states on their website:

"How much does it cost to end your contract early on O2 Refresh? What do you charge for the leftover Airtime Plan?

With O2 Refresh, there’s no penalty for ending your contract early. All you have to do is pay off the balance of your Phone Plan.

There’s no termination charge for ending your Airtime Plan once you’ve settled your Phone Plan."
ziggycj
3 Feb 17 #43
Thanks, I messaged them online and they've properly cancelled now. I followed the instructions from OP and questioned the person on the phone but they insisted on 30 days (only shortened by a PAC code which will cancel the contract once used). I paid of the device plan but they kept saying 30 days notice. At least it's sorted now hopefully. Will just have to check for any charges.
ziggycj
3 Feb 17 #41
I tried cancelling my contract and paying off the device but they said I have to give 30 days notice so will still get charged the £14 contract cost for this month. Is this correct? I thought you could cancel straight away and just pay the £72 to keep the phone.
1905dar to ziggycj
3 Feb 17 1 #42
As someone above mentioned you are not cancelling the contract. That's incorrect and will result in you paying the full amount.
You need to ring up and pay off your device plan.
Then usually it's best to leave it a day. Then ring back up and cancel your airtime as per their ts and cs linked to in an earlier post.

I skipped the Z5C as it didn't give much over the Z3C, but my Z3C got to the point where I couldn't run pokemon go and use messaging apps reliably at the same time due to lack of RAM, and the internal storage was always full and then there was the announcement that the Z3C would not get Android 7.

I did seriously consider the Z5C but it wasn't going to solve all of the problems I had with the Z3C as it only having 2GB of RAM and knowing when Sony drop software update support I know that a X Compact was going to have a longer life for software support+updates. However if I had a Z5C right now and it was doing what I needed I would not buy an X Compact and would wait for the next model to come along, it seems like a reasonable tactic with Sony phones to skip the new model immediately after the one you have but get the one after that.
darkdreamingdan
30 Jan 17 #29
I agree with you on the whole. However, a bunch of us seem to be upgrading from Z3C. If i had a Z5C (which I almost did end up getting) then this upgrade does not seem to make much sense. However, coming from a Z3C, in reflection I'd rather go straight to an X compact despite specs being comparable, it fits my own needs better, though I'm not surprised it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Never had problems on Pokemon go on a Z3C I used it on let alone the Z5C. Z5C has less RAM than the X compact, but the RAM it has is at least faster. Their CPUs are about equal, but Z5C's GPU annihilates the X compact and runs games much faster. Even despite this, the Z5C often comes out on top for battery tests as well, although software plays a major role obviously.

Never had my Z5C overheat. Not even recording 4K video. Which the X compact cannot do. On a test I have seen with an array of Xperia phones the Z5C easily beat down the X compact recording for much much longer at greater quality before they overheated.

They have the same fingerprint sensor. I wouldn't consider the XC waterproof, arguably it is supposed to be but it is not warrantied and certified here as such unlike the Z5C.

On balance, the XC is not so much of an upgrade. As I like to play games on my phone, shoot 4K video and value the waterproofing, Z5C wins hands down over a bit more RAM that I don't noticeably see the difference in the hands of a user familiar with android and keeping it tidy. XC also sports a few minor spec enhancements that are mostly irrelevant to the user, such as QC3.0 which does nothing for the charge time really and the slightly revised bluetooth spec, again, doing nothing much. I would say the X compact's main practical undisputed advantage is it's camera is better for stills.

Finally, on a personal note, the X compact looks and feels pants compared to the Z5C.

I would rather wait and see if Sony put out a major improvement on the Z5C, instead of a sort of sidestep at best as the X compact is.

The problem with the X Compact was how they stepped back compared to the Z5 Compact - which have held their value so well as they are still a fantastic phone. The Z5c vs Z3c offered a quicker CPU and perhaps more importantly a waterproof USB port, the Z3c was fine but opening the port flap daily caused it to fail sooner rather than later. The X Compact may be reasonably waterproof but I'm not risking that personally. The screen resolution argument is pointless, at that size, 720p is adequate and still higher PPI than the iPhone (or close if not).
vulcanproject
29 Jan 17 #20
I have a Z5 compact. Arguably its still a better package than the X compact. Won't be changing it until someone does a higher end chipset in a smaller frame.
Niz to vulcanproject
29 Jan 17 #26
I went from the Z5c to this Xc, the ram on the Z5c was too low 2GB vs 3GB, pokemon go wouldn't run well and switching between that and whatsapp would need the game to restart. On the Xc its absolutely fine. The fingerprint sensor on the Xc is just spot on virtually immediate/certainly faster than the Z5c. Z5c would also overheat a lot. The only downside of the Xc to me is the lower res front camera and lack of waterproof. However youtube video showed the Xc is still watertight even though its not officially.

Bottom line contrary to what the reviews say, i would definitely recommend the Xc over the Z5c

Not sure why people are so obsessed with screen res. I would knock the screen res of my Nexus 6P down to 720P anyway as I don't get any joy from the extra pixels. It all looks basically the same to me, and screen resolution has an impact on battery life and responsiveness. For devices under 5" 720P is just fine and dandy, and certainly not so important that I'd get some screwy Chinese import.

We bought this last Sunday, picked up in the O2 store same day. We called to unlock the phone on Monday as the O2 app was throwing a error and it took until Thursday to receive the code. Just got around to calling to pay off the phone and cancel the airtime contract today with no issues or questions asked.

Really happy with the phone. The fingerprint sensor is great and both front and back cameras are impressive. Overall a solid upgrade from the Z3C, although it is a shame its lost the waterproofing. Incredible buy at £190.

Would definitely be interested to hear your thoughts on the phone if you go for it. My z3c is the only phone I've never really wanted to change for any other reason than just fancying something newer. The internal memory issue has been a problem until I got a bit more disciplined and deleted some apps I literally never used. Otherwise, the z3c has, and still is, an amazing phone for its age. With a skin and case on it, it's still in mint condition as well after nearly 3 yrs. I think I've just talked myself out of considering changing it.

I'm very interested in this. Currently on a trusty Z3C, but wanting an improved camera, fingerprint sensor, more ram, more internal memory (can barely install anymore apps, even with sd card) and finally getting rid of the charge port cover. By the way, this device is widely reported to be unofficially waterproof (see youtube etc). They market it as waterproof in Japan, but due to warranty abuse pretend it isn't anywhere else. For my occasional waterproof requirements, seems fine to me.

Never done the O2 Refresh before. This topic seems to be the 'original' discussion topic to cancel early:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/new-samsung-galaxy-s4-i9505-16gb-409-99-iphone-5-16gb-389-99-o2-refresh-1589083

From some brief reading, it seems to be doable, but quite a faff. O2 will frequently misinterpret what you're trying to do, and be ready for them to overcharge you and have to request a refund. Be vigilante and check your bank accounts for the months proceeding.

Overall, seems to be a high time investment in this deal. Is that worth ~£110? I think so. Gonna probably pull the trigger on Tuesday which is the last day of the deal.

Ok... have found the airtime plan. I was being silly expecting the 500MB plan to say £3 against it rather than £17
Sorry to be a pain but I've got some more questions though now as I'm really tempted.
What are common mistakes one could make that spoil chances of being able to do step 4? Do you at any point put the SIM card into the phone? Also, is there any o2 branding in the OS of the phone?

The reason I stopped using the Z3C was that it was a bit short on RAM (I was getting to the point that lots of applications would need restarting all the time) and that I wasn't that happy with it having just Android 6. To be honest if you're happy with the Z3C then I'd suggest you don't buy this as you won't get much more out of it or at least wait a bit until the price drops further or a new model is announced which would hopefully bring back things like ANT+ and waterproofing.

Totally agree with everything you said, it's a shame there aren't any real alternatives to this (not to my knowledge anyway). I have a Z5 compact and had been looking forward to the next iteration after also owning the Z3 compact, but having had a go on the new version and read the reviews im sticking with the Z5 compact for now. Great price for the phone, but if you're able to get the Z5 compact version for about the same price id go with that instead.

I really hope Sony step up next time round otherwise im going to be holding onto my Z5 compact for a long time!

I'm still using a z3c and really can't see what a xc or z5c would give me over mine. I agree that most reviewers have missed the point that with this phone, and believe as in the ops comments, that processor spec was lowered to deal with the overheating issues. It is a shame that waterproofing was lost on this model though. Too many benchmark geeks will be quick to say that this phone doesn't cut it, but it's real world use that matters to me, and this looks to be very capable.
I'm tempted to buy a new phone soon, but can I be convinced to change my z3c for this?
