Yeah, the main stories are generally very well-written, mature, full of twists and turns, with very likeable characters (despite their glaring flaws).
The substories, meanwhile, often provide a bit of comic relief. I was playing Yakuza 4 recently, and was rescued by a curry-powered superhero. I later stumbled across him being beaten up, and rather than accept my help, he suggested that I rush off and buy him some curry to help restore his strength, haha! Just one of 60 substories.

lol! Possibly true, but I did that with the rest of them, only to see the price half within weeks! Took the plunge and order it. They are spiritual successors to Shemnue, which are my favourite games! Glad to see the series finally doing well on the west.

I think this game has sold well or at least sold better than expected aa its been sold out pretty much everywhere. I'm planning on buying it as well because it does look really fun. Game seems like it has the perfect mix of serious and fun.

damn it! I really want this game, but previous instalments haven't sold well and the price has dropped not long after launch. Due to this I have been watching the release of this carefully, ...... a lot of places have sold out now, and there's no sign of a price drop

Based on purely anecdotal evidence, I think it's probably - possibly - fair to say that Yakuza has never been more popular in the west. I know several people who bought into Yakuza 0 having never played the earlier games. I guess it seems like a logical starting point for newcomers.
Plus we're getting that remake of Yakuza 1 in summer, and Yakuza 6.

Going to get this as soon as I finish Yakuza 5. Best series I've played in years, actually happy to support this and pay full price. Plus, this means Ishin and the HD collection could come to the west in the future.

Actually i posted b'cos someone commented they loved Yakuza 5 and i disagreed. I hope i read books as i'm doing my masters. As stated before to the " no critique please " fanboys of Japanese Cinema many games have subs but games like Yakuza 5 with only Japanese audio are rare outside Japan of course. Excluding " Hi ", " Hee " and "Ha" during fighting scenes there is no audio stimulus hence my point.
Differing opinions, you love it, i don't. Chill.

I absolutely love the series.infact GTA and Yakuza are really the only series I still care about.
just finished Yakuza 5 and payed full price since it was digital only here.
hell I re-bought a PS3 just to play Yakuza 5.
Yakuza 6 is also confirmed for western releases in early 2018 and 1 HD release is said to be due to release soon.

Got Yakuza 5 free with PS+ basically a mortal kombat arcade game with a storyline and 80% of that game was reading subtitles!. I'll pass, theres a reason foreign films and games generally don't break any records in the west as their a niche market.

As someone pointed out above coolshop have it for 37.95. Can't vouch for them personally as never used them, but heard they are legit. Also with topcashback at 4.6% it brings it to 36.21. More than happy to pay that day one and support the series over here.
I missed all of these games because I didn't play the first 2 on PS2. Can you get Yakuza 3 and jump in or would I be missing a load of story out?

Yeah, I started with 3 a few years ago. Both 3 and 4 (and presumably the later games) offer very, very, very thorough synopses of the earlier games!

I think 4 is the best starting point - I felt it was a big improvement on 3, but unlike 5 it has a good recap of the previous games. It was also free on PS+ in 2015 as well.

You can start with this one as it's a prequel, but Yakuza 4 is a good starting point if you have it and want to know about some of the characters.

These games are just fantastic - engaging story, satisfying gameplay, a crazy level of detail (the mini-games - including Outrun!), loads of style... and totally utterly bonkers.
Yakuza 0 is the only community i joined on PS4 and the only game I'm looking forward to...Even though i own 5 and haven't completed it.
