eh? PS3 is just a abbreviation of Playstation 3! All Playstation 3 models can also be referred to as a PS3 has nowt to do with the specific model. The 3 PS3 models are known as the Phat, the biggest original, bulky and least reliable but still have a soft spot for it. The original slim, smaller more reliable but still same physical design and this one the super slim, different top loading design, some say a bit cheap looking but quite stylish from what I've seen though never personally used one as I just have the Phat and original Slim one....

Heat for the deal anyway, just pity it's not national nor online.

Sure, and you won't even need to take it out of the box!!

Just switch on your PS4, grab your controller, then walk over to this new PS3 in its box, lay it flat on the floor, then stand on it (both feet advised if available) and then you can play the PS4 game on the PS3.

I was thinking about getting a PS3 soon, but I don't know much about the different models.

Would you guys recommend a specific model over another? I've seen there are PS3 fat, PS3 slim, PS3 super slim and then quite a lot of variations of HDD sizes? Not sure if they've got any other difference or one model is better for whatever reason?

And, what is usually a good price for them to have a look and see if I get a good deal?
CampGareth to mickael28
24 Jan 17 1 #21
Custom firmware is the main reason to go for older models and reliability is the main reason to go for newer models. I owned a couple of fats, the ones that came with a 60GB HDD so proper first gen models. Both are dead now due to overheating and the solder connecting CPU (I think) to motherboard breaking. Custom firmware was pretty great for piracy reasons though. Later generations draw less power, generate less heat and generally don't die as often.

Great if you have a 3D tv as supports both 3D blu-rays with a wide range of 3D games. Later consoles have abandoned 3D. I've got a super slim and phat model but I think the slim's are probably the best to be honest unless you need ps2 compatibility which my phat model has.

I didn't know that the original models could cause those kind of problems. Hmm... is it possible to put that custom firmware in the newer models, either slim or super slim? And is there something that I should check to make sure it'd be compatible?
slayermatt
25 Jan 17 1 #31
Yeah older models were well know for it. Yellow light of death (much like the red ring for xbox) was what it was referred too. Old slim models might have compatible firmware to load a custom os on but these super slims I know for a fact don't.
mickael28
25 Jan 17 #32
Thanks, I thought an old model would be cheaper and as stable as the new ones, I need to research about that problem now and quite possibly avoid those ones then.

Go easy, he's wrong, but I can sort of understand why.

The original Playstaion had a second incarnation in a MUCH smaller body, that was marketed as the "PS One".

What 3D games do you recommend? I tried Arkham Asylum (way too much 360 motion which gets very headachy), Child of Eden (pretty nice and chilled) and Shadow of Colossus (sometimes great, but mostly too much fast 360 motion which again feels horrible).

I've tried very hard to get in to MGS4, being a big fan of MGS1,3 and even 2 but I just cannot do it, I've attempted to play it about 5 times since release and have now officially given up. only if you're not bothered about presentation. GTA V for example is so much crisper and sharper and runs much smoother than on the PS3

Also whilst ps plus was great value on the ps3 (free), its only £3.33 per month which i happily pay for online gaming. Any games they want to offer for free (agree pretty rubbish so tend not to bother) I just count as a bonus

Worth driving 6 hours for? seriously considering it! :stuck_out_tongue: My PS3 broke ages ago.

Sony really messed up not making the PS4 backwards compatible, there is no excuse as Microsoft managed it (PowerPC to X86). As a result I'm going to buy a Scorpio instead as Sony has no hook to keep me.

List of 3D games here;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games_with_3D_support

A personal favourite for me is Super Stardust but have enjoyed Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Motorstorm games, Crysis games, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo's, Uncharted 3 and Doom 3 plus a few more I've forgotten about I'm sure.

I don't know what 3D tv you have, some 3D sets be it active or passive 3D can have too much input lag in 3D mode or have too much crosstalk/ghosting so if the game requires very high reaction times with fast screen updates then it might cause issues. Gran Turismo is quite good in that its really about judging position and braking at the right time rather than constantly changing direction etc.

If your tv has virtual 3D its worth trying on some games, on mine I ramp it up to 10 and can get quite a good 3D effect on many games, it's weaker 3D but sometimes it surprises you how good it is. Playing Fallout 4 on xbox one and use it on that with a good effect a lot of the time. I guess this would depend on tv though I'm using a passive 3D set.

It's a benefit of the cell processor that it can do 3D processing quite easily on the ps3, sort of task the ps3 is ideal for.

This comment really shows how little you know about architecture and emulation.

That's not even considering the fact that backwards compatibility mostly makes zero sense as a business decision. Microsoft only recently made it possible to try and deflect some attention away from the train wreck that is the core Xbox one console.

Modding is almost pointless now. PS3 games can be had for so cheap on you know where 2nd hand its not really worth the effort. I still own my ps3 slim 320gb its in pretty good nick and hasn't skipped a beat since i've owned it that's the one i'd recommend buying. Almost offloaded it this week but still have games i wanted to finish so its safe for another 6 months.

Why does the complexity of emulation matter in regards to my post?, all that matters is that it can be done if they bothered to. They could even do it the easy way putting the physical chips in the console like with the launch 60GB PS3 which has the EE+GS from the PS2 on board. It would have added maybe £50 if that to the price of a PS4.

BC does make a lot of sense as a business decision because it locks in brand loyalty. BC was such a big deal in previous generations because it ensured people could seemly switch onto a new console and enjoy the games they hadn't finished, that was a major selling point. I would have bought a PS4 no questions asked after my PS3 died, but because it doesn't do BC I can move to a console I feel is better.

Microsoft may have had a torrid start with the One but oh boy have they been turning it around ever since. They threw everything in to that console including BC and now a UHD drive which Sony will seriously regret in a few years time. The Scorpio will build on all these things even further. As for train wreck it's selling excellently and has hardly 'lost' this generation by any stretch of the imagination.

Marky1987
25 Jan 17 #77
I'd like to get either a ps3 or xbox 360 again. Just for the huge library of very cheap games. There were many that I never played or played but didnt finish or simply games that I could play again. I don't have lots of time to play so always struggle to justify £20+ for a game. Currently have an Xbox One. To be honest the graphical difference is less now (between current gen and last gen) so if your not too bothered on graphics and want a cheap gaming machine with massive library a ps3 or 360 would be the way to go.
bonzobanana
25 Jan 17 #78
I'd have to agree but really the Switch is a portable first and a very weak home console second so not really that comparable. Switch pricing is so excessive though even allowing for the weaker pound. I'd personally value it at about £180 retail not £280 but perceived value is down to the individual.

Because of the short battery life and the fact most people use portables in the home, a ps4 and vita remote play combination is better anyway really. Far more impressive than Switch on a portable screen.

What? His comment did make sense. Backwards compatibility pulls people in. They want to be able to play their old games on their new console. Unfortunately sony would rather not bother and try sell PSnow instead.

Also, mocking his knowledge on it and then calling it emulation. Shows how much you know. As if those little baby APU cores could emulate the PPC code with any speed at all. They're all ports, they port all of the BC360 games from PowerPC to X86 to run natively. Hence having to download each game you put in. The disc is just an authorization key.

Vinyl is the material a record is made from. LPs, singles, etc are different types of record.

Think of it like this: swap "a vinyl record" or "a wool jumper" and see if it still sounds right.

Singular:
"A jumper" or "a record" is correct.
"Wool" or "vinyl" is also correct.
"A wool" or "a vinyl" is not.

Now, plural:
"Jumpers" and "records" is correct.
"Wool" and "vinyl" is also correct.
"Wools" and "vinyls" is not.

Mine is this one but its a common feature on 3D tvs. Budget 3D tv's are getting rarer now. Many companies have removed them from their line up for 2017 especially for active 3d and LG has moved it to the higher models and stopped selling their 3D panels to third parties (like my Finlux). Also no 3D feature on the new ultra HD blu-ray format.

Still 3D tv's out there to buy but its getting harder. Most normally have virtual 3D. I personally think passive 3d is a lot better than active 3d and most consumer surveys have found generally people prefer passive 3d over active 3d and that televisions with passive 3d are more likely to have the 3D feature regularly used. The last bit probably because the glasses don't need batteries or charging and are extremely cheap (same as cinema 3d glasses) so the whole family can watch 3D without cost issues. My set came with 8 glasses. Many active 3D sets its an optional purchase or you get 1 pair.

https://finlux.co.uk/media/wysiwyg/Product-manuals/49UT3E310B-T.pdf

If money is no barrier the best 3D set to buy is a LG OLED model for budget options some Hisense models support active 3D and perhaps in the middle LG with their passive 3D LCD tvs. It really depends on how much you want 3D as the LG models with their IPS LCD panels don't perform quite as well as other VA panels generally which only support active 3D but can give increased contrast for normal use. I prefer IPS as they suffer less from judder even though their black levels can't match VA. My panel has a contrast of 1200:1 compared to a much better 4000:1 or better on many VA panels.
mickael28
26 Jan 17 #89
Many thanks for all that info... really useful mate. I read a couple of days ago about that, lack of 3D in all newer models :disappointed:

I've not tried the active 3D TVs properly, but I think I prefer the passive ones as well, much easier to set all up and have a quick viewing without having to prepare much.

PS: woow... a 46" 3D TV, nice!!!

But do you know if it's difficult to do or if you've got to buy something expensive to allow you do that?
Asking because if it's just something you can easily do via software, it will help a lot finding difficult games, allowing you to try Japanese releases, etc...
omisnad
26 Jan 17 #91
I've got this LG 3d tv . there is also cheaper 49 and 55 inch versions. It is worth every penny, and in some ways better than the oled versions, especially for gaming. It helps that panel on mine is perfect unlike most of my previous LG tvs. Also cause it's 4K you have true 1080p passive 3D, which was previously the only reason to buy active 3d over passive. PS I suspect this and the oled 3D TV will be LGs last and thus the very last 3D TV you can buy, period.

PS3 for £60 not bad I know games are outdated but they cost 1£ or less CEX shop
Some game still look good on PS3 and they play ok

If you think 5 Years ago these old games cost £40 + each new - now they £1 but they are still games and you can play them .....

The biggest thing is that you do not need to pay PS+ Subscription £40 Per Year For these money you can buy say 20 x PS3 games
and if you got 2 x PS3 you can play online as well with friends or family etc ....

I think for Blue Ray + DVD player , + Games For 60 Very good price

Mostly dep on firmware and older consoles. If you really want to play niche/rare/never exported games then it might be worth it. Software mods are easy, getting the right console etc can come at a price (not a huge price, but still) dep on how lucky you are at sourcing the right one. I think its easy to take these things to far and end up spending all your time sourcing x and not playing the games you started out intending to.

The ps3 library is massive, and mostly reasonably cheap. I would skip the modding, grab a later more reliable and probably cheaper slim ps3 and just buy cheap games off ebay or at cex.
mickael28
26 Jan 17 #100
That tends to happen, almost 90% of the time, if not more. I think I'm mainly curious about what has been released in Japan at times, I could watch videos, but it's not the same as getting the game, playing it for a 1h session and having a first hand experience.

I'm now thinking that I might even used a PS Vita more, as at least I could take it with me whilst commuting. We'll see.

Thanks for the info!
