Is this better than using warm water?
Nope.

As long as it's warm (i.e. Lukewarm).
Water straight from the kettle will only lead to a broken windscreen eventually
Mostly down to the temp though, around freezing your're probably OK. It's when it gets towards -10 that it gets dodgy.

That's not my experience. One can of the stuff from poundland tends to last me the winter.
I'm not sure what value "works down to -40°" is when -2°C is the norm for a few winter nights.

The £1 stuff works just the same.

The £1 de icers are crap!
You end up using nearly a full bottle on a very icy morning and most of the time is just freezes to the windscreen.
Prestone works down to -40 degrees.

Is this stuff genuinely better than the stuff I get in the poundshop? How would you tell?

By actually trying it on a really cold day, and yes it's a lot better.
