Ive had my eye on 1050 laptops and spotted this. Seems to be the best 1050 deal currently although hopefully they will get cheaper.
Use the code CQ117HPAF67 to get 5% off and also of course you can get Quidco etc I'm sure. Other models available but this is the cheapest.
Spec:
Windows 10 Home 64
i5-7300HQ Quad-Core processor
39.6 cm (15.6") diagonal Full-HD (1920 x 1080) display
8GB RAM with 128GB SSD and 1TB storage
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 (2 GB GDDR5 dedicated)
Bang & Olufsen Speakers
I know you guys love some gaming laptops to discuss!
Anyways, might be of use for some of you. Ive not bought it yet but its seriously tempting. The MSI version is £999 and the upcoming Dell version is likely to be £799 but without the SSD I would expect. Just my thoughts.

This is on offer again at HP with their 10% off but also available for roughly £664 from Littlewoods if you're financially savvy (in other words will pay the full balance off after the offer credit has been applied) with another £15 or so from Quidco/TCB on top. Probably forgot to inflate the price before listing.
I wouldn't post it as a deal as no doubt it would lead to someone paying obscene amounts of interest after a year but if you're financially responsible it's a good price!

I bought a different version of the Omen 15 for a xmas present, but it went straight back. The machine in general is fine, but the keyboard was the issue for me
It is backlit, but only in red, which might look 'gamery' but I didn't find a restful colour to look at. Also the printing on the keys is red, and when not backlit the contrast between that and the dark grey/black of the keys was so poor it made it hard to read at times.
shame as the previous years model had adjustable colour backlight and white lettering.
Ok, may in part be my poorer eyesight nowadays, but I think it was a poor design choice. There is a reason keyboards mostly have white lettering.

Yeah. Its a bit annoying as the first few days that the model was released it was actually much cheaper. I didn't go ahead and went to spec again a few days later and it had went up quite a bit :disappointed:
Probably just increased price due to low stock/popularity

On the lookout for a powerful laptop but not seen anything that ticks all the boxes yet.
Requirements:
i7 - a proper one thats quadcore+HT (not the pretend rebadged i3s that are Dual core)
Nvidia 10xx graphics
17" screen
SSD
8+ GB Ram
Absolute max budget is £800 - may stretch to £900, but only if its worthwhile to do so)
Axeboy to 118luke
15 Jan 17#40
Nothing matches that quite yet unless you stretch to £1000.
However, try PC specialist for the 1050 4gb i7 17" model they have. "might" come in around budget depending on memory/hd/os options you take
Personally, I don't think so. Its a lot of money for a 1050 and not far from 1060 prices. I think it would be worth waiting a little longer to see if Dell bring other 17" models out soon to meet your needs.
However, I have a mental issue with it being over £1000

If you've played Fallout 4 on an SSD and a HDD, it becomes apparent that load times are becoming as much a part of the overall gaming experience as FPS. I don't want to wait over 30 seconds and admire a piece of 3d art whilst I wait for a door to open.

I think you're better off waiting for a couple of months and let the 1050s/1060s get into the market. Will be better value in the spring/summer once there's more competition on the market eg.

I agree with you, I personally wouldn't even look at a 'gaming laptop' if it didn't have some kind of SSD fitted as it will affect general operations in and out of gaming. Loading textures and other data from a mechanical drive can cause stuttering in game - and given how big some games are now (I think I saw one come in at 44GB) I wouldn't want that loading off a normal hard disk.
But unless you're on a major budget, why would you not have an SSD? And if you are then maybe a desktop is a better option as a cost saver.
Enet
14 Jan 17#11
I couldn't comment on that without looking into it. But personally, besides being little annoyed at some game load times, I haven't noticed any problems so far.
Ok after a bit of research the main issue is that you "might" have occasional small wait issues with the larger open world games. So I suppose if you are playing large online multiplayer games this may be an issue.
In other words, for gaming performance:
1 Get a decent GPU with enough GDDR5 ram.
2 Get a decent CPU with enough DDR4 ram,
3 then worry about the SSD which will undoubtedly make your whole PC user experience much much nicer.

Putting aside the 1050 vs 1060 debate the other issue is 2GB of Ram. This really is at the lowest end of recommended specs. SSD is definitely a "nice to have", but doesn't actually affect game performance except loading times of course.
