Just back from Sainsbury's in Luton ( Bramingham Park). Soon needed to renew Office 365 subscription and saw it on the shelf for £12.50.

On going through the self scan checkouts it went through at a penny! (Will add receipt to first comment... bit slow...actually 7th comment!). Verified with staff and they checked and said a penny is correct!

I apologise in advance for any wild goose chases.. appreciate that this might be store specific. However I think that £12.50 is a good price (hence putting it up at that price)... but a penny seems crazy. I went back and picked up a few more copies and left 2 on the shelf. Although after chatting with the staff, think that they may well have had them!

Good Luck!

I've got a feeling that this may have been an error which Sainsbury's are now aware of. I'm trying to scan them as I type this and it comes up as unable to be sold. Took it to customer service and they scanned it at £59.99

The number you need isn't on the barcode. It's: 126974038

And as per my post on the previous page, I've done a search of the system and the only store showing stock at the time was Hanley. There's every chance that's a mistake, so don't go too far out of your way to check.

I believe the Office home upgrade trick still works too. Stack no more than 4 of the Office Personal subs to your account and then go to your microsoft account and purchase a 1 month (disable auto renew) Office 365 Home. It should convert the Personal 4 years in Home for 4 years and one month. You can now install office in 5 places an add 5 people to each get there own 1TB of one drive etc.

The 1p pricing is due to the inventory listing going discontinued (probably in favour of the swipe cards everyone is mentioning).
The op is lucky, as they are supposed to be removed from sale and sent back to supplier for a full refund. The 1p is normally a red flag for store colleagues, but so few know of this!
Well done for grabbing what you can!

Yes it's not bad, however you must go in to the general settings and make sure that it saves as Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007-2013 by default otherwise you'll end up with open office file types which most other people won't have a clue how to open if you end up sharing the documents via email etc.

Visio (or Project) is available for £9.95 through the Home Useage Programme if your company offers it.
Begize
30 Jan 17 1 #45
Current price for a copy of Office 2016 through the HUP (Home Usage Programme) is £9.95 I think. As people have said, it's a one off payment and is something Microsoft started doing for holders of certain levels of commercial MS licence or partners. You actually buy a licence using a special code linked to the company and it's emailed to you for download. In our agreement we are allowed to personally buy up to 2 per year and the company is limited in the total number per year. Legally I think you are supposed to delete the licence if you leave the company but there's nothing stopping you from keeping and using it.

We're in the process of shifting some users to Office 365 which means those users assigned a licence will be able to download "free" copies for home use. We have a limited number of licences (less than the number of employees) and they are all logged to the companies account by Microsoft and are assigned to your username so fully trackable. We can also delete / disable them from the licence portal and I would imagine your company will be the same. The single commercial Office 365 licences allow 5 installations on a PC or Mac, 10 on a tablet and 10 on a phone, so 25 in total per user, but only for business use and again, all tracked. Your company has to be signed up to an Office 365 licence in the first place and have some kind of link from your internal network to MS to provide the authentication for users or use some Microsoft cloud products that include them.

As people said above, a 365 licence must "phone home" over the internet every 30 days to re-activate. If it can't or if the licence has been deleted / disabled etc, the product becomes similar in functionality to the free Office apps you can download from the IOS and Android App stores.

What does activation involve in a store? I see this mentioned often on here but what exactly is involved?
vardx to tawse57
30 Jan 17 #39
I worked at a large computer store a bit over a year ago. For any MS office products I'd need to swipe / scan some card and select a pre-set value or product from a list displayed on the card machine. Same machine did xbox live top ups / sony top ups / itunes etc. Haven't a clue how it works, but it did involve scanning a card or inputting a code.

If the op has been able to activate his though I guess it's different. Unless they've all simply been pre-activated.
tawse57
30 Jan 17 #38
Ah, this came in a box. My local Sainsburys only has these as little cards about the size of a credit card for sale. They have a silver foil bit on the back presumably with the code underneath so I suspect no activation required by the staff.

lyesbkz to moodyafc
29 Jan 17 1 #29
At 1p a year, you'd need to renew for nearly 39,000 years before you spent the £389.99 that Office Professional 2016 costs.

On a serious note, you can view the comparison here. The main difference is that Office 365 includes updates to the latest releases as they come out, and not just the 2016 version. Office 365 also has more apps than the home version of Office 2016 (unless you really prefer to spend £390 on the Professional edition).
mcrobbj to moodyafc

The advantages are that you never have to upgrade, and the 1TB of storage. However if you get the £10 office deal from your work then that might work better for some people.

For every activation key added to your account, it adds a Year onto your service!
I buy the keys when needed, from eBay at a heavily discounted price, and I think I'm covered to 2020, and it updates every year to the latest variant of the software!

Great find Op, hopefully nationwide....

29 Jan 17 2 #16
Yes Office 365 is a subscription, some people might be able to get a better deal on the Office software buying it as 'Office 2016', especially if you (or friends/family) can get it free or heavily discounted through work, school, uni etc.

The subscriptions aren't bad either though, especially at prices like £12.50 a year (or a penny).

£12.50 for a year of 1TB Onedrive, 60 minutes / month of skype, 1 licence of office desktop and 1 licence for office mobile isn't bad at all.
