Could be because there are a lot of free offers and knock down prices etc for now tv passes, if it was for sports it would go nuclear

True!.
I'm guessing it was on account of the fact that the Deal was via the old 2 year+ NOW TV Box?, as opposed to the newer 1 year+ NOW TV Box instead, or whatever?.
If for the Movie Pass Credit alone, then it's excellent value for money. :-)
But, if you don't already have a pre-existing NOW TV Box, and this is your best bet at the NOW TV Box?, then .....
Horses for courses basically?. :-)

If you go to the Freebies section there is a code for 1 months Sky Movies costing precisely nothing. There had been a double up option for 2 months free but I just missed out on that.
From the comments made it was still working a few hours ago.
Obviously it helps if you have a Now TV box!
I notice from the picture for this deal that the Now TV box is quite an old version which was replaced by an updated one in black which was replaced last year by a version that has improved picture quality and many other features.

Good point!
Do you recall who's freebie Thread that free 1 month Movie/Cinema Pass was under?, or ..... thanx. :-)
To be fair it's probably the best deal out there at the moment. I've bought numerous boxes ( mainly when they are under a tenner) for the vouchers and flog the boxes on fleabay. Plus it looks like it's the original older white box .

Does the code on the passes work ? They are normally valid for up to 12 months, but these old white boxes have been out of production for longer than that.

ok deal but been cheaper and with the 2015 black box before. Probably best at the moment as all the xmas/new years sales have dried up but nowt to get excited about and only worth buying if you must have a now tv pass this instant rather than being good enough to stock up on like some of the previous deals....

An aside if anyone is interested: I have used nowtv for quite a while now and have been frustrated by the lack of Netflix. I asked Santa for a roku 2 box and the Netflix app is simply amazing. Great interface and picture quality. It's no wonder Sky won't let Netflix onto Nowtv

Now TV is only 720p and in stereo sound, which in this day and age is daft. Netflix and Amazon are 1080p and surround sound!

Yes, Sky's approach seems to be to flood households with the Nowtv box - many must be sitting there unused. They're useful to give away as smart boxes for (mainly older) folk without smart tvs. Your local Freegle/Freecycle group is also a good please to offload them - much better than landfill.

Yep the roku Netflix picture is great, 1080p as you say. It looks fantastic.
Well worth the 39 quid upgrade from the nowtv box IMHO. I used to pay Sky £30 pm subs so its not much in the grand scheme of things !

(fully ignoring the joke for the benefit of those not blessed with a sense of humour and appreciation of innuendo)
Yea because single core, slower, no wired ethernet and 720p max is such a better idea.
Ok so not currently available but were very recently and these deals come up frequently enough....

when the free 2 month of movies is about to expire, go online and cancel, give the reason its too expensive and you are automatically offered 4 months at 4.99 a month. do it again as that deal is about to expire and you get another deal. i am currently on 3.99 a month for 8 months. dearer than kodi but more reliable but then again there's always plex

I hardly ever watch TV but would like to occasionally use BBC iplayer - discovered yesterday that the feature has been dropped by my obsolete (5 year old) Sony telly.
I really don't want to have any further contract than the TV licence; would something like this suit me? Is there a better solution out there?
Suddenly feeling very old and dim-witted! I'd appreciate guidance if anyone can be bothered.

[It's been so long since I used this older white box that I can't remember if you can install apps on it but for £3 more than this deal,as long as your tv has a hdmi and you can connect via wifi to your router from your TV's location a black now tv box will work (£15 with a pass from Tesco and many other places) the £40 smart box has a Freeview tuner and pause rewind live TV, but isn't necessary if you just use iplayer. Just remember to cancel your passes on the website as soon as you activate them to stop the recurring subscription and continue to use the iplayer features on the box http://help.nowtv.com/article/Do-I-need-a-subscription-to-keep-my-NOW-TV-Box
If you have a xbox or ps3/4 you can get the iplayer app on them
If you have a laptop and a HDMI cable you can plug it into the tv and use iplayer when you need it
Also you could ask on your Facebook page "anyone got a spare now tv box lying around?" and you'll probably get one free or for a pint (beer or milk depending on the friend)
Hope that helps

Thanks for the help. As Facebook is another complication I've so far managed to avoid and "The Black one is far more superior to that of the White one is every way" (and I can probably pick it up in Tesco later) I'll give it a whirl. Thanks again.

This box lets you do that. The newer (similar but slightly more rounded shape) one is better, a wee bit faster in loading the graphics, and no doubt the thinner, newest one is best. I wanted to record programmes, like sky and virgin and BT subscribers can with their recorder boxes, so I bought a second hand BT 2100 youview box from ebay for £45. Without subscriptions, you can only watch freeview content of course, but it lets me record and watch months later, and has all the helpful listings menus etc, and has a beeb iplayer app in it too.

Anyone cancelling that free month that was posted on here a while back.
Opt for "it's too expensive" on the reason for cancelling form, and you might get offered a deal to stay.
I got offered £3.99 per month for four months Movies, which trumps this deal.
(also still £1.90 credit for the boxes in CEX - just traded in two more white boxes today which I've had lying around a while)

Interesting Post ...
Where there's a will, there's a way, huh?.
Is that BT Box actual Freeview?, or just fancy Cable TV Channels without the frilly 'extras'?. :-)
hkhk
16 Jan 17#43
Actual freeview. I'm not even with BT - I'm with Virgin but with no tv package, just the internet. Nice to have the smart recorder functionality, being able to look at the programme listing and record things. No "23 days left to watch" as with iplayer. Google Youview+ recorder box. This thing is essentially a video recorder that does freeview from the ariel and connects to internet too for apps to run netflix / now tv (if you join those) and beeb iplayer. And pausing live tv to boil the kettle, brilliant!

NOT BAD?!. :-)
I know with the equivalent SKY HD Box when you're 'done' with it (eg. NOT a current Subscriber anymore, etc), allllll the Recording and/or Pausing facilities are immediately removed from you! (you have to be an existing paid subscriber to still continue benefiting from such ... )

Hi all
Bought a used Sky+HD box from carboot sale to link with an unused dish. Can get whatever free channels are there.
Is there a way anyone has hacked the current sky+ HD box to be able to record from freeview? Or for that matter, been able to stream from the net via the ethernet cable? OR flashed the software so as to make it like the many dreamboxes/linux hacked boxes? Maybe install Kodi at least?
Will be a shame to throw this away as landfill.

This is just plain weird. I thought this must be an old thread from 2 years or so back or something. I replaced all these old white boxes long since and there are always pass codes on ebay for around a tenner. How is this a deal? 789 hot votes for an obsolete item.......

There's 2, there's the newest more expensive 'Smart Box' which I find personally pointless and overpriced, and there's the Black Box which is the next generation of the white box which I purchased that streams in HD, totally recommend the standard black box that I have, works quickly, since I have Fibre I'm yet to experience any delays on streams as well and I stream in minimum 720p HD
