Is this a good deal? For the age of thing and the fact that it is just in essence a D3200 that has been rebranded, I think that I would take a used D7000 or D300S. Plus for me at least these things a bloody difficult to use as it is far too compact for me.

D3300 had a few advantages over the D3200 :-
No Anti-Aliasing Filter
IN-Camera Panorama
Longer battery life 700 vs 540 SHOTS
Faster shooting 5.0 FPS vs 4.0 FPS
Better kit lens

Thinking of getting this for my son. Any suggestions for a smallish travel zoom to go with it?

The standard kit lens is very good with this and offers 27-82mm focal length. It is quite small as it can be collapsed down when not in use. The one to get is the latest 18-55mm VR AF-P http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-55mm-af-p.htm
Next step up is the 18-140 but this costs about the same as the camera.
have to buy the wifi adapter 27081 WU-1a for that £41 unless you know of a generic version for that?

If anyone is considering buying a Nikon remote for this. I've just been stung on eBay with a fake. Works fine as expected but I paid £4 rather than 99p from hong kong. Have started refund through ebay.
I've bought the Nikon HB-N106 lens hood and Hoya 55mm UV filter off Amazon too.
Amazon did price match Argos but I'd pay £10 more to Argos than Amazon any day for a high price item, Argos customer service has been excellent for me.

DSLR app is free and will control it through your phone and even bracket and time lapse

mine came with the VR2 lens from hdew over a year ago for 279.99 with a 3 year guarantee so since this has now been replaced by the d3400 it's a bad deal

Bought this from Argos with the VR lens when Quidco were doing 10% cashback. An extra tenner for the VR lens is a no brainer IMO

Yeah I would pay the extra for the VR lens. This is cracking camera for the money. The best in its class in my opinion

Yep great camera, better than the newer D3400 imo.
Missing from D3400 (compared to D3300)..
● Built-in flash only half as powerful as the D3300.
● No Mic input socket (D3300 has this)
● No sensor cleaner (D3300 has this.)

I was lucky enough to get a d3200 for $180 Canadian last summer, and I've been amazed with it
I can't say enough good things about it - if you can afford it, buy one

I've seen these go on eBay for £250-£330 USED
So £309 brand new is great
