This looks to be the cheapest it has ever been by £10 - I've been watching this for months and months and finally biting at this price as it looks like a great deal.

Try pick up an "openreach modem" on ebay then you can use any router you like. Just plug it in and connect to routers WAN port.

Got mine for £15 last year but they seem to be going up.

If you have BT Infinity then you should have an openreach modem installed somewhere in the house and should have no problems with this nighthawk x4s. If not, as callum84 mentioned, you will have to buy one (ebay).

Brought this last night and almost posted it but struggled at 1.30am to get posted. It's £10 cheaper than when was Deal of the day just few months ago. It has MU-MIMO which I wanted. Used to max out my routers processor but this has a 1.7 GHz Dual-Core. Think it's going to be an excellent buy arriving tonight. I normally have 16 devices on wifi plus about 8 wired a large house so this is what I think I need.

Haha, its currently the in thing to have "gaming" versions of your products (i.e. a sticker) in the hope that people will buy it for "gaming", to improve their "gaming performance". Gotta love marketing!

Anyway looks a good unit despite the silly name. If you have to have the best wifi connection than this has to be a good option though I would always stick to LAN for the best performance.

that Asus is slightly older than this r7800, it's more inline with the r7000. Asus has a better GUI. support for merlin firmware is great too. netgear is pretty good hardware, improved with dd-wrt

I've had this router for around a year. Running stock firmware, it rocks. WiFi I get superb speeds all over my large flat.

When I got my R7000 router it was OK. After flashing it with an AsusWRT firmware it is great. Far more responsive and, more importantly, I have been able to set it up with as a VPN client and have certain devices to run through that and other devices to run through the normal WAN.
I'm not sure how much of a difference this would bring over the R7000, especially with that firmware I noted.
Still thinking about building up a router and running pfsense on it, the R7000 gets overwhelmed if I push too much through the VPN.

Heat added.

VimesUK to drtesseract
17 Jan 17 1 #34
Unless something radical has happened I found that it was very difficult with the R7000 using the official firmware to get OpenVPN running. In fact I gave up.

Instead I used a AsusWRT variant, thank goodness for that, and now I have a useful Asus type UI and have it configured for AirVPN with no issues, running as a client.

I did find that anything over 30Mb/s would saturate the dual 1ghz capacity of the Netgear router. I have the potential for around 70Mb/s. It would also run hot as the CPU load on the router would always be high.
That is why at the moment I "shape" the traffic to either use the VPN or the std WAN through the router and my main PC uses a desktop client for AirVPN when needing to download at a high speed.
Not elegant but cheaper for the moment than building up a box and running pfsense on it to make my own router.

I think some of the users disagree, the firmware released appears to of made it worse.
"Here is a comment from a user with the latest Firmware update:
Re: NetGear Nighthawk R7800, constant disconnecting and slow connection
Options
‎2017-01-05 11:21 AM

I bought my Netgear Nighthawk in August and it's worked perfectly since. Even took away my cable to my gaming computer and instead have been using wifi with about 100 mbit down and 10 mbit up. I updated to the new 1.0.2.12 firmware today and now I'm at 4 mbit down and 10 mbit up on all wifi devices. Not to mention the drops in connection that happen every few minutes.

To anyone who hasn't updated, DON'T! And if I have to reset everything to factory settings I'm going to flip, as I am leaving for a course tomorrow and can't really leave the family with a router that doesn't work.

Please try your firmware before sending them out."

I don't own the router, however I know somebody having this experience. I would recommend sticking with the R7700, unless you don't need Wifi on your router.

The post I've copied was from 5th January 2017? I don't mean that disrespectfully, but you've basically just informed people its okay to splash out £100+ on a router. If there is a firmware that fixes all problems, can you at least post proof?
Mandroid578

Woahhhhhh £572 for a router (ad7200) . AD technology doesn't even exist yet. That's like buying a 5G phone.
VimesUK
17 Jan 17 #43
You make a point but I'm not sure if context is being applied here.

When I first bought my second hand R7000 I had spent a while over at the Netgear forums before taking that chance. If I had made the choice only on the many posts I had read I would have probably avoided the router.
For me it has always been rock stable but a little lacking in its native VPN support. The UI when using the official firmware was also lagging. When Netgear tried to integrate Ario functionality it did get messy.
Using the AsusWRT firmware for that router and, with its hardware limitations, has been good for my needs.

But buying the R7800 from Amazon is as near to a trouble free risk as you are going to get with their excellent returns policy - at least in my long experience of using them.
Buy it and test it out and then if you can't achieve stability or it doesn't meet your needs just return it for a full refund, they even pay for its return.

I would be tempted myself at the price it is if I could be guaranteed that there would be a noticeable improvement of the 1.7Ghz dual core being able to handle my VPN connection at full speed rather than being saturated like my 1Ghz dual core is of the R7000.
Of course to do that involves flashing a DD WRT firmware and that has risks etc. And I do like the UI of a Asus router, but that is just a visual thing.
gwapenut
17 Jan 17 #44
If new firmware is flashed, and not liked, can it be reverted to stock and the router still returned to amazon?
VimesUK to gwapenut
17 Jan 17 #48
I have done this in the past several times but read up first on the procedure on how to do it or it could be bricked, that is a risk when flashing any device. A small risk but something to consider.

In my experience flashing a router with a custom firmware has offered more in terms of a UI and functionality rather than improve stability, others might have found something else.

Personally I much prefer the UI of a Asus based router than others I have used.

I had a TERRIBLE experience with my last TWO Netgear routers. DD-WRT worked slightly better (but most the problems with the router firmware were ported over to DD-WRT). My problem is, people are naive and believe everything they read online. I remember buying the DGN3500, people told me "Oh yeah, solid as a rock after a firmware update" (which it actually was up until 6-12 months of use), but half the people commenting don't even own the router it is just assumed.

I do believe you, but I have had this experience with netgear before and they never fixed the problem. People think Netgear are so reliable, but they've never experienced being a part of a faulty batch of routers, and they cannot troubleshoot to save their lives.

I've linked a post I made 5 years ago, I had a faulty router, they wouldn't replace or return it and because I've had it over 6 months neither did my retailer.

https://community.netgear.com/t5/General-WiFi-Routers/DGN3500-disconnect-issues/td-p/301152/page/11

There is my proof. The situation to me just seems... too similar. I would never buy this router in a million years and no amount of convincing will make me waste my time buying it (because I'm the kind of person that WILL get a faulty one lol).

The worst part is, I believe the problems I've had with them were actually hardware related. My other routers have always worked fine, so maybe constant use just seemed to deteriorate them over time? I can't confirm/deny but in both instances they were never fixed with firmware updates.

If even having read this, you buy one and it happens to you, "I told you so". If you're lucky enough to get one that works for over 6 months, hats off to you.

EDIT: As you can probably tell, I have a bee in my bonnet with Netgear routers.
VimesUK
17 Jan 17 #47
I do understand where you are coming from and can completely sympathise with your past experience.

For me it worked out fine, thankfully not needing Netgear and their support. For others they have had an horrendous experience. I have read similar posts and threads over in Asus type forums, in particular concerning the Asus 3200 router.

What I still suggest is that buying from Amazon, for me and many others, is generally a hassle free experience with both the purchase and returns. So many times I have had refunds credited back to me before they have even got my returned product. A £200 Sigma lens was refunded within an hour of dropping if off at a Collect+ shop just last week.

With the above in mind I would suggest if you are considering this a good deal then buy it from Amazon and test it using the supplied firmware and if you have lots of stability issues which can't be resolved then I would consider returning it for a refund. For me custom firmware has just added features etc rather than improve stability.

17 Jan 17 #49
No problems, and thanks. I hope yours works, and continues to work. If you do start to experience problems, be aware they could subside/come back and it gradually gets worse. Like I mentioned in my first post, I know somebody with this router, and you need to RMA as soon as possible before the point of no return lol. >_<

So recently I have been suffering from really high ping, unplayable in online games. Never had an issue before. There are a lot of wireless devices connected in my house, about 12. It's definitely the wireless that is slowing me down because if I turn off the wireless my ping settles right down to 20-30 (to Discord server, and most games).

We have about 80mb which should be able to handle a few concurrent netflix streams right? I'm connected by powerline since my room is in the attic and we have virgin hub 3.0. Do you think a router with quality of service to give my pc a decent chunk of bandwith would solve my issue? It's strange because I've lived in the house for almost 3 years and this issue has only just started.
The_Hoff
18 Jan 17 #51
Something like as Nighthawk will give you a number of advantages (google terms), WMM and QoS (up/down and also service specific), the ability to manage bandwidth allocation at a device level, additional security benefits and options sets for UPNP and NAT settings, better port triggering and management, AC level speeds with greater throughput, much greater WIFI coverage, data transfer over LAN greater increased, USB ports for HDD NAS backups, parental controls etc.

I have a Superhub 2 on Virgin VIVID150, it's been running in modem mode since about 3 weeks in to my contract as it quickly became apparent it was a piece of junk that needed power cycling every week to make it do its job.

All that being said, your first job is to download InSSIDer/Netgear WIFI Analyser app and check your channels for interference, our neighbours could have changed provider or installed something DECT related and are causing your router to struggle across all of its interfaces, the processing power in them can't be great.

So, check channels, move your WIFI networks to whatever looks free and re-test. Perform firmware updates on your router/powerlines if possible, update relevant apps on your PC, check cabling isn't degraded (if it's unshielded and runs next to other noisy stuff you'll take a hit too.

Failing all that, buy a better router and see how you get on.

Well have only owned a couple of days am not seeing these issues. Haven't had any dropped clients have 19 devices connected currently get up to about 24 at a max at one time. Was a little disappointed on speed on wifi on a couple of devices until realised as I was adding more devices to the Wifi the limited speed was down to what the tablet /phone can handle. Range is a bit further than my old Asus, but a lot lot faster and lost the old annoying blackspots upstairs.

UI for setting up was not as nice as the Asus router that was used to. Meeting our needs no longer overwhelming my router if push it hard. Speed into house was 164 Mbps and so getting what was paying for. Would say I considered getting faster now realised I don't have many devices that can use most of the full WiFi speed this is giving me.

I think it's been an excellent buy.

I have not tried it myself, but Voxel's firmware for the R7800 could work for you. It focuses on speed and CPU optimization for significantly faster OpenSSL/OpenVPN performance.

Sadly this deal has expired but I'm sure it'll show up again - set up a Camelcamelcamel alert.

Thanks for that but I have decided to get my head around a pfsense built up box. For not much more than a good consumer router I can build one with much much more processing power than any router you can buy. It would be more configurable and very suitable for a VPN connection.
