MS released a revised Surface Book, called Surface Book with Performance Base, which doubles the GPU power, and some other internals, around Oct 2016.

Unfortunately, it's only released in the US.
But it's rumoured to come in the UK soon.

This £999 version is the old 2015 version with Skylake.
Perhaps this is why there's the price drop, to make way for the updated version.

I see now that Argos are also doing it at that price, which means you can get John Lewis to price match Argos and get the 3 year warranty included and £80 for added care if you want that, which would be an even better deal. Best to do it before Argos runs out of stock

Purchased last week, best laptop I've had... 128gb is enough if you have a Nas or server..

Same here and probably for a lot of people as the 256gb model has a dGPU. I'd much rather one of those than the surface pro. With the next gen versions due soon I expect Microsoft to drop prices to start shifting stock.

I love and hate my Surface Book in equal measure.

It is an awesome buggy mess - inexplicably dropping the USB, even when connected to a powered hub. The Surface Dock is the same buggy mess. The SD card will disappear without warning and that has nothing to do with the dock!

Things like this amongst many other in the logs:

"The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly"

There's just nothing else like it though. Luckily I got a 3 year warranty from John Lewis so it WILL be going back at some point...

Genuine question as I don't know much about laptops, tablets etc but I just bought an acer notebook with an i5 6200u for £370 (acer swift 3) and just wondered how it compares to this?

My swift is all metal design, 14" IPS 1080p screen, light up keyboard and quality feel. 256gb SSD, 8gb RAM, fingerprint sensor, i5 6200u cpu.

Just ain't got touch screen. Just not seeing what the difference is for the extra £630.

I doubt you paid £370 for a premium i5 laptop with a 256gb SSD. Where was it from?

Sorry meant to say I got it second hand. Only 3 weeks old though. But still can be got for £500 ish.

I'm not goading I just want to know if there was big performance increases somehow. Just got future reference when in the market.

Second hand makes more sense, with the £370 price you gave I assumed the Swift 3 was a standard plastic laptop.

I think there's definitely a premium price for the Surface Book because it has features that are unique to it. The removable tablet screen could be a big deal if the versatility appeals to you and the touch screen features, particularly with the included pen, are meant to be excellent. Having now looked at some reviews for the Acer Swift 3 it is clearly positioned as an affordable Ultrabook for consumers who don't want to pay for a Surface Book or a Macbook so the RRP on the Swift is very competitive, particularly given Acer are so late to the party and are essentially copying other products. Judging by reviews I would still say some of the Swift 3 parts are meant to be slightly lower quality though; the metal casing is a bit more flimsy, the screen quality and resolution isn't as high and the battery is worse. These things may be insignificant to most people though.

true, for your only computer it's low but I've also got a high spec PC and nas, so it's OK for me.

If you order thus from Microsoft and go via the O2 priority app you can also get an accessory bundle worth £274 for free.

I'm sure it's a nice laptop, but personally, I'd rather buy a HP X360 and save £350.....

We have been issued these as work devices. Lovely premium feel, way too top heavy though, and forever tipping backwards.

Yep Microsoft haven't quite mastered the "lapability" side.

The dock is very poor. Always randomly dropping connections whether it is USB or ethernet. This is after numerous firmware updates as well.

Those of you who got it while you did, lucky you. Seems Microsoft have increased prices on the Surface Books due to pound weakness against the dollar.
