Good deal but bear in mind Pebble has ceased operations and you won't get any more updates or support.
Worth remembering they have been bought by Fitbit. So likely no warranty and limited services.

It's true that Pebble warranties and services are virtually worthless, but Pebble were not bought by Fitbit, in fact Pebble went out of business and Fitbit bought some of their technology and some staff joined fitbit. Not a business takeover.

I read that since Pebble for bought by Fitbit they will no longer honour any warranty claims.
They are great watches though, just don't expect any support as Pebble no longer exist.

Fitbit have committed to keeping Pebble servers running until the end of 2017. Before the end of the year, Pebble will push a firmware update that will the watch a standalone device that does not need/use Pebble services.

Hi, where did you find that info please?
I have a new sealed one I was going to keep so may need to open it for the firmware update.

So they say, I'll believe it when I see it. I personally wouldn't buy one now on the basis of that 'promise'. FitBit very deliberately didn't acquire the actual Pebble products, just the IP, as they don't want to be liable for any warranty or support. So it's basically gambling on the goodness of their hearts to do it for free.

They will function fine without Pebble servers anyway. Their primary job of notifications is fine until Android/IOS make a change that breaks the phone app. What they will lose is watchface and app updates (which can be sideloaded) and some proxy services like weather updates.
The recent problems are great opportunity to buy one cheap.

People still want smartwatches?

people have no clue. plenty of people wanna a smart watch. this is a phenomenal one for the price. better than any Chinese knock-off that float around. brilliant for the price regardless of no warranty. I mean come on it's only £50! not a bloody £200 Samsung. I'd buy it in a heartbeat but I've just bought the pebble 2. still a fantastic watch. all companies offer 30 day returns after that warranty kicks in for these sort. of products .

Have 3 in this household, tempted to buy a backup they're that good! Think pebble community will keep these things going no matter what happens with Fitbit....my pebble steel battery lasts 9-10 days, these should last 6-7 on full charge..

Personally, I think the Time's are ugly looking things, that's why I went for the Pebble Steel. As mentioned, the battery life is great but obviously these are way more functional if you want a *full on* smart watch. Can't fault the price.
For any other Steel owners out there, what are your must have apps?

I was very happy with mine. The only app I really use is Battery+ Outside of that nothing, just happy with the notifications. I said"was" because the watch is only 4 months old and the battery life suddenly plummeted from 10 days to 5 and at last charge 4. I've contacted Flubit and still waiting to find out how I can return for a replacement or refund. When the servers are switched off, what functionality will the watches lose?

Battery life will be influenced by the watchface in use. For instance, if you have a watchface with a second hand, or a constantly changing display then battery life if shortened. Use one that updates every minute instead of every second.
Turn down the backlight sensitivity so it doesn't keep coming on when you are moving.
And more notifications = more vibrate therefore more battery used.

I also read that for optimal battery life the watch needs to be charged at 50% not when it's empty.

that's interesting - I've always tried to use all charge before recharging - anything!!

I like the idea behind the Pebble and the limited functionality traded for great battery life. But what puts me off is the design.
If the Steel model was available at this price I think I'd bite despite the uncertainty around future functionality.

Have a look on Amazon, you can get the Pebble Time Steel for between £95 and £130 depending on what colour you want.

"Warranty support is no longer available for Pebble watches."
I read about the firmware update on a different page but it not available yet. it will follow later in the year so I can't comment on whether functionality will be lost or will change.

I'm sure it will be fine after the servers go off as most people will be most concerned with phone to watch notifications but I wanted to make sure people knew that things will change if they are using 3rd party apps or services. The biggest killer for me is that the warranty is null and void.

I've changed nothing on the watch, the battery life just plummeted for no reason. I've done a factory reset twice and returned to the default watch face and seen no improvement. Since the problem I've now let the battery completely drain before charging. First time made no difference but last night I charged from the mains and once the watch said it was fully charged, switched off the mains and switched it back on so the watch showed it as charging again. The watch has now been off charge for about 10 hours and shows 96% remaining. If this usage is correct, it will have returned to a 10 day charge cycle. Fingers crossed....

try battery+ in app store to record/view power usage..
My original Pebble Time Steel had battery issues, going from 9-10 days to suddenly 9-10 hours before needing a charge. Pebble took it back and replaced it having gone through various tests and resets. So it does appear there can be a problem with them.
Interesting comment about charging them at 50% for best life, first I've heard of that. But it rather scrubs the 9-10 days battery life if you've got to charge it on day 4.... :man:
Gutted they went to the wall. They had a good product that in general worked without any fuss or fanfare.

Unfortunately after a promising start, remaining %age has plummeted. Hopefully Flubit will sort out a replacement or refund. Don't think I'll be using them in future for anything expensive or electrical, Amazon would have sorted this out quickly.
