Had this phone, great for a cheap phone, but started to slow down within months of having it, and I stopped using it pretty quickly.

I found the screen really unresponsive, and as I work from my phone, I found it a great annoyance. Great for a light user.

As you seem to know a bit about Android phones I was hoping for as bit of advice please. I picked one of these X5 Pro's up last year as a result of a HUKD deal...Gear Best had it on offer (mistaking possibly) for about £37, had to wait for almost 2 months to get it but I wasn't in a hurry. Main phone is an iPhone so this was really just to familiarise myself with Android OS and apps. One thing I quickly learnt was that the phone is rooted(?) I downloaded an app called Root Checker and it reported 'root access is not properly installed on this device'. Would you know how to resolve this or be able to point me in the right direction on line where it explains what the process is for gaining root access for someone with not much Android techie knowledge?

Had this for a year, good phone for the money, you get what you pay for but if you only need it for light use its perfect. If you pay equivalent of £5 per month for this compared to equivalent of £40 a month over a year for a top of range Samsung or Iphone if you buy upfront.

Anyone upgraded their x5Pro Android 5.1 version to 6.0? Its a good deal at 40quid.

There is the newer Doogee X9Pro for 60quid with front fingerprint reader on AlieExpress but its presale or flashsale. Anyone?

Sorry everyone. Ive just cancelled my order as I really want a phone with Android 6. Spoke to chat
and looks like seller made a mistake and it will be Lollipop 5.1 coming. Amazon will refund you the money but
I just saved myself the hassle as everywhere, x5 Pro comes with 5.1 and x5 Max comes with 6.0

Sorry, to cause any misunderstanding.
I bought my X5Pro a long time back. I saw the Android6 update on the Doogee website but havent updated to that. I dont know how yet.
As for buying one new, should it not be Android6 by default?
As for X5Max Pro, I read on xda-developers that its firmware(a few months previous) that had some bad stuff and I dont know if its latest firmware is without the bad stuff. Please check for yourself.

Thanks Andy but yesterday I purchased the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro for £127 It was more than

Like Dave said, the battery has a plastic film at the terminals. Great phone for the price and is already on Android 6. I ordered two for my youngest, one was already in English but the other was in Chinese so a quick google was required to change the language, and for some reason that phone wont auto set the time.

Yes, the link is the Android 6 download which is where I got the update but I dont see any instrs to use to update my 5.1 version. Anyone done it?

To shabbird, thought you were going to wait? Sorry to hear about twitchy buying finger but its a good deal as its almost highend specs.
I assume you can get that rare case that fits and also please doublecheck&confirm if you can set your locale to UK not Falkland Islands.
AndyRoyd
10 Jan 17 #40
I've updated one from A5.1 to A6. Bit of faff to implement the update using a W10 machine as had to load unsigned drivers and felt obliged to locate a firmware repack, otherwise v straightforward.
davening
10 Jan 17 #41
Thats good news. I will get back to you later on with some questions and handholding.
I am uninstalling the many apps I have on my 5.1 X5Pro and wondering is that ok to do.
Also is the 6.0 version stable with updates?
The adoptable storage bit: does that work stably? Or, LOST.DIR keeps filling up with fragments?
Can Portable Storage instead be used with moving apps to sdcard still avail?
AndyRoyd to davening
11 Jan 17 #42
Consider my X5Pro is second-option night-out phone so rarley used, never even bothered shuv a microSD card in it. I didn't bother uninstalling any apps. Was mildly surprised that it is effectively an update, not a wipe and clean install, so most (possibly all) apps installed when on 5.1 appeared to be present on 6. No idea if stable, I just updated it; checked if few apps did as expected; turned it off; shuved back in drawer. Was watching a film at same time so didn't take much notice of the procedure other than the irritating unsigned driver workaround requirement.
davening
11 Jan 17 #43
Ok, guess I will have to work it out after I move over to 6.
To AndyRoyd how do I convert over to 6?
AndyRoyd to davening
12 Jan 17 1 #44
The ramble below assumes you are comfortable with unpacking / unzipping and performing other tat normally associated with ROM / firmware updates and is based on my use of win10 PC to perform update of Doogee X5 Pro from Android 5.1 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow:
1) download unsigned USB drivers. Think mine came from http://www.mediafire.com/file/hlsn0adj5a1fw6v/
2) download SP Flash Tool. I used v5.1524 cos the later version appeared to trigger CRC errors http://spflashtool.com/download/SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1524.00.000.zip
3) download (repacked) update file. I chose the repacked option cos the flash tool wouldn't load the manufacturer's file. Your choice to faff with manufacturer's file or go with what I found to be the functional route of the repack from https://yadi.sk/d/NTB5iqkzzuFNr
4) restart win10 PC via recovery options (Settings >> Update and Security >> Recovery >> Advanced StartUp >> Restart Now >> Troubleshoot >> Advanced >> StartUp Settings)
5) on boot, select option 7 to allow installation of unsigned drivers
6) manually install unsigned 32bit or 64bit drivers to suit your w10 installation (think there were five in the driver file. Didn't take much notice of what they were or if all were needed, I just installed them all). Install each via Device Manager, rightclick name of machine, leftclick Add Legacy Hardware, etc. Ignore the "device failed to start" rubbish.
7) Install SP Flash Tool
8 ) May have restarted the PC - can't remember - but any restart should probably be via recovery and selection of option 7 (again) on boot.
9) Turn on phone. Realise it has near-zero power so wait 30mins+ to put a reasonable charge in it.
10) Connect phone to w10 PC via standard USB data / charge cable. I chose to use a USB2 socket on the PC, not a USB3. Then hope the faff of installing unsigned drivers was worthwhile and that the PC successfully acknowledges the phone.
11) Run SP Flash Tools; specify the scatter file from the update file; hit the download button.
12) With the USB cable still connected to the phone, turn the phone off.
13) Watch the update progress bar displayed in lower part of the flash program GUI.
14) When flash progress shows 100%, restart phone and rejoice at the marvels of Marshmallow.
Might have missed some minor point but pretty sure most of the major stuff is covered.
Usual caveat of to update or not is your choice and risk, satisfy yourself of suitablity of software and sources, etc.
Good luck.

14 Jan 17 #45
Hi Andy, thanks for the effort for writing your instrs.
I have cleaned up my mobile now and am ready to attempt a flash.
I have not done flashing before and so your assumption is not so valid.
Nevertheless, I have read on xda enough to know its easy to mess it all up.
Therefore,
1. I will attempt a full backup and also of the IMEA which I don't yet know how to do.
2. I have already setup minimal adb drivers from xda developers to change permissions for using battery statistics and greenify. It was simply done by running an installer. Will this mean I won't need to install the unsigned drivers mentioned in your instrs?
3. I found a website on firmware for X5 Pro. Did you use this for your instructions?
http://getbest.ru/x5pro.htm
AndyRoyd to davening
14 Jan 17 #46
Backup IMEA? I asume that might be IEMI, in which case simply dial *#06# to view it.
If the device manager in your win10 machine includes items such as
"MTK USB Port"
"MTK USB Modem Port"
"MTK USB Debug Port"
"MediaTek PreLoader USB VCOM Port"
"MediaTek DA USB VCOM Port"
then you may not need the unsigned drivers. If not, you will need to load the unsigned drivers.
Consider my instructions could generally be split into two stages: the faff with the unsigned drivers; then flashing the actual update. The flash update procedure when using SP Flash Tools is applicable to virtually every other Android device with the MTK6735 CPU and similar as used by the X5 Pro, and as it only involves around total four clicks (depending on where you buried the flash file) virtually any instructions on using SP Flash Tools should provide the required "how to" info. I would be amazed if YT wasn't littered with vids on how to use SP Flash Tool.
davening
14 Jan 17 #47
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, been watching videos on YouTube on SP Flash Tool,
mediatek tool to create a scatter file,
backing up IMEI. Now, looking for backing up the modem too.
Found videos on the drivers to install too. Yet to watch that.

Yes, it looks like I don't have those installed yet and will have
to get the drivers you mentioned all of it installed.

It can go smoothly as is with your instructions but I like a backup
of everything including imei, modem, whatever nonetheless.
You did say its done at my own risk. So, of course,
I want to minimise risk here. I am taking it slowly so I understand
what I am doing.
