This is a nice phone for the money. My opinion after comparing it to a Xiaomi mi5:

Worse camera than a mi5 (but better than a Redmi note 3)
slightly faster than a mi5 when opening apps
even though the battery is 500mah bigger I found battery life to be almost identical.
Screen is on the warm side and not quite as nice as the mi5. Perfectly fine though
zui is a lighter skin than miui, it multi tasks better, it has fewer options and unlike miui I didn't find any bugs. I tried the international, indian and Chinese rom. I found the indian rom to be the best, there's no Chinese language or bloatware and it gets more regular ota updates than the international.
I thought I wouldn't like the unusual single button layout but it works really nicely and it's quick to get used to. Apple could definitely learn from this.

My only real problem with it is finger sensitivity, even running nova launcher on the most relaxed setting the screen flicks and scrolls away very quickly, if you are used to apple style finger sensitivity you are in for a shock. You could probably get used to it but the mi5 was way better for me in this regard. This and the camera/screen swung it for me and I chose the mi5.

I loaded a custom ROM in my phone just last week and here's the steps and the pitfalls you need to avoid:

This is the guide I used: http://zukfans.eu/community/threads/zuk-z2-bootloader-unlock.62/

So grab your phone S/N, install ADB and Fastboot on your PC, and install the Google and ZUK drivers.

Things to note:
If you're on Windows 8/10, you might have issues with driver signing enforcement. Bizzarely the drivers from Lenovo for the ZUK are unsigned and Windows does not like that. So you might need to disable this function. Thankfully, it's rather painless. http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

Now to unlock the bootloader. You'll need to go to http://developer.zuk.com/bootloader but first you'll need to register to the site. I'm assuming that you're not in China or have a chinese SIM lying around so you'll need to register using email, which can be done here: https://passport.zuk.com/wauthen3/wauth/jsp/register.jsp?lenovoid.action=uilogin&lenovoid.realm=www.zuk.com&lenovoid.ctx=JTJGc3RvcmUlMkZ6Y29kZSUyRmluZGV4LmpodG1sJTNGbnVsbA&lenovoid.lang=null&lenovoid.uinfo=null&lenovoid.cb=http://www.zuk.com/login/logincallback.jhtml&lenovoid.vb=null&lenovoid.display=null&lenovoid.idp=null&lenovoid.source=browser:m.zuk.com?lenovoid.action=uilogin&lenovoid.realm=www.zuk.com&lenovoid.ctx=JTJGc3RvcmUlMkZ6Y29kZSUyRmluZGV4LmpodG1sJTNGbnVsbA&lenovoid.lang=null&lenovoid.uinfo=null&lenovoid.cb=http://www.zuk.com/login/logincallback.jhtml&lenovoid.vp=&lenovoid.display=null&lenovoid_idp=null&lenovoid.source=browser:m.zuk.com&lenovoid.thirdname=null&lenovoid.qrstate=null

Once you register, fill in the bootloader unlock form and you'll get an email with some Chinese writing, this is unimportant. Look at the attachment to that email and you'll find a unlock_bootloader.img file. Download it and you're in business.

Now I ran into trouble sending fastboot commands to my phone, just wouldn't be detected for some reason, no clue why. But I found this tool by mauronofrio: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/tool-tool-one-driversunlocktwrpfactory-t3432782 - works like a charm, you can use it to unlock the bootloader and then install TWRP on your phone.

Once you have TWRP then you can install whatever ROM that tickles your fancy, no problem. Personally I'm running Resurrection Remix by fedor917 https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/6-0-1-unofficial-resurrection-remix-t3504145 I tried CM14.1 but it's not stable enough for me and I much prefer RR. Plus it's Marshmallow so xposed works fine on it and plenty other stuff that hasn't reached Nougat yet. I really want Nougat-based Resurrection Remix on this phone and I've been working at porting it, but it's the first time I do this so it's quite a steep learning curve.

If you like big screen phones
The best phone Now is Samsung Note 4 you can get up to £300 for new / nearly new or used less 200
This my opinion Why get cheap chines phones with no updates etc
Get 2 Years old phone with all best hardware at this time It is still going strong and will be for another couple years
Got everything what other phones now do not have

I have dropped accidentally from 2 Meter high on tiles and I have marks on frame the screen is top quality very hard to break compare to new phones likes S7 or S6 or note 5 Anyway you can buy frame for £10 and double side tape and replace the frame and will be like new again

Now do same thing with new glass phones you drop game over shattered Battery can not replace the screen curved and so easy to crack

I keep this as reference, thanks. I decided i wait and see if the Indian ROM gets upgraded to 7. When it's stopped supported (6 months time I bet) I will try mokee, hopefully it be release mode by then and not nightlies or what ever is sooner. Hi,

To anyone receiving this and looking for a good screen protector and case combo;

Buy the Amzer Matte case on Amazon and Brotect Airglass, it covers the whole screen so no gaps or edges. Don't buy a third party unbranded tempered glass, they don't cover the whole screen and are ugly :disappointed:

Ok i just installed the indian rom via these links below, as it came with a custom factory rom with no ota abilities and was unstable see dev options issue:

indian rom (use this instead of the chinese rom in the links above)

http://zukfans.eu/community/threads/z2plus-zui-2-0-093_st_16081.763/

Only issues I had was that the dev options kept on disappearing on the shop rom, had to keep tapping to get it back after exiting menus. I had to revoke usb debugging authorizations then unplug the phone and replug it back into the pc to get adb to detect it, a prompt then came up on the phone screen to allow connection etc. any issues ping me a msg on here and I can help

Just tested the indian rom and it is okay.

1 Feb 17 #254
Thanks mate. I was settling on Mokee too due to good reports. I assume you went for Mokee too. The $5 one-off payment for OTA would be well worth the time of regular flashing updates manually. Still waiting for phone.

In my experience too custom ROMs camera hacks are difficult too. Often an app turns out to be the answer. Not too picky with cam as have better cams on other phone. Very grateful for your briefing of update options on Mokee and RR, saves quite a few of us research and time. Thanks again.
dolanduck
1 Feb 17 1 #253
Yes, bootloader must be unlocked before anything like this can happen as you need a custom recovery to do this. The process is very easy however, doesn't differ from any other adb bootloader unlock.

If you know how to do this and are familiar with adb etc. I strongly recommend you flash Mokee or RR. ZUI has incorporated NONE of the Nougat benefits.
dolanduck
1 Feb 17 1 #252
Hi, yeah it is best to get someone else to flash but only if they don't like the standard ROM (provided its not malware filled), as most users won't get the benefits root, adb etc. bring when flashing new roms.

Unfortunately RR must be fully flashed each update. It's not official RR, so no OTA or anything, just hosted on a regular download site. But I'd say RR has much more discussion around it since the developer is actively involved with the community, so perhaps if you'd want peace of mind or have your bugs addressed more directly RR is the way to go.

Mokee has OTA updates, no need to flash full ROM. You can donate 5 dollars to get OTA on your phone or you can get the OTA on the site and manually flash. I donated tbh, not a lot of money and I'm too busy to be bothered with the hassle. Works well though, incremental updates are small and easier to flash and I've the whole process is automated, no need to manually enter recovery or whatnot and no loss of data

1 Feb 17 #251
I will prob stick with the Indian rom if it has ota or flash to the correct Indian rom if it doesn't. I am currently using a 1st gen moto e with mokee 7 as my main phone is in for repair. It's fairly stable so might put mokee on the z2 if I can figure it out.

Did you have to unlock the bootloader to stick mokee on it?
elTuco
1 Feb 17 #250
I say to noobs, get a techie friend to flash Mokee or RR, maybe wait till one is RC or FR status first. MAybe cook him a meal too

Thanks dolanduck, nice report.

It's a pain to flash ROMs if they keep changing before becoming RC or FR. Have to backup then restore apps+data with titanium after each.

Are any of Mokee or RR nightlies able to flash incrementally a file or OTA so one does not have to backup & restore apps/data every time?
dolanduck
1 Feb 17 1 #249
I got stock Indian with OTA updates, but still replaced.

Mokee and RR 7.1.x are stock Android ROMS with multiple enhancements, much more frequent updates, better CPU speed and management, better everything really. They are usually more buggy than the official roms, but the release candidate roms are fine. Both are in nightly status, but release readiness is approaching quickly, with 95% of features fine. Expandable notifications, quick replies and Nougat specific improvements are all in RR and Mokee, whereas ZUI has not implemented either which is baffling. ZUI is also buggy even though it is official, I actually think RR is the most stable, but Mokee is officially supported so I'm on that. I may switch to RR if it reaches release candidate before Mokee. One thing I like about Mokee is how the u-touch button is implemented, used to open menus, swipe to multitask etc. Little functionality has been lost and way more has been gained in the custom roms. Unless you are an average user and are happy with ZUI, there is literally no reason to be stuck on ZUI.

One negative; the camera is ass on both roms and will likely be ass until both are in the final release status. Camera API's are hard to work with on any phone and rarely do custom roms match the original rom. If camera really really matters, then I guess stick to ZUI. But if you can wait and want to gain infinitely more Western Market friendly UI, pick Mokee or RR. Preference is yours.

dolanduck
1 Feb 17 #245
If you have no technical knowledge, you probably will find ZUI to be adequate tbh. Especially if you're just your normal user, there is no need to fiddle with custom roms. However, if your phone comes with a vendor rom (a rom the store has put on), then I'm afraid you will HAVE to go through the process of putting the official rom on, since vendor roms contain malware, don't receive updates and can even brick phones.

Don't worry about it just yet, get the phone and see how you feel about the user experience, if you like it then don't bother. I didn't, so I changed.

Just for anyone receiving these;

Tested out all ROMS available, viable daily driver ready ones anyway, and the best to install are either Mokee or RR 7.1.x by davidevinavil

Both are slowly but surely reaching "RELEASE" readiness, with Mokee being the closer. Also, stick to the Mokee 7 nightlies, don't bother with the Marshmallow release as there are still a few annoying bugs that oddly aren't present on Mokee 7. The developer for RR updates regularly too and has added many useful features to the phone. Both are a stock Android experience.

I would NOT go with CM13 or Fedors RR Rom or the Unofficial Lineage OS as they're buggier than the above.

elTuco
29 Jan 17 #229
Yes this was cheaper by far. My topcashback tracked too, cost £126 in the end using the discount code on page 1 in OP, later code not first one. Never send anything back to china as has to be: registered mail which costs A LOT & whoever it is, even when they receive it and sys shows signed for, they claim they never got it and paypal does not help, they all do this even honest(ish) ones. Basically sending stuff back to china is losing money twice. Its just a gamble. If anything pricey from china is dodgy or broken, credit card's claim dept is best hope.
Nocturnalizer
29 Jan 17 #228
Yeah, I think I would've got one from aliexpress if they'd had the same discount that banggood had (they might have it now). I'm happy overall, although I think having to send the phone back under warranty for any problems would be a bit worthless really.
elTuco
29 Jan 17 #227
I'm gonna test the phone for a couple of days to make sure it is OK + gauge performance to compare with later roms. Indian noug should be out by then, might give it a go for ac ouple of days too. But prob will settle for mokee latest stable and port apps with titanium pro.

Whatever, will install nova, should work with home button utouch gestures, can not afford to have softkeys for home/menu/back on 5" screen, used to 5.5" screen acreage already which will continue to use too. Then keeping an eye out to see if anything stable wil beat mokee in amonth or two.
elTuco
29 Jan 17 #226
I dont think there was a particular order, they send them out in batches. Some ppl who ordered later got theirs but others here who ordered a week or longer before them (all free shipping) are still waiting. I assume they sent the lot on first day of hols 27th jan as all seem to track left origin border. Chaotic order of dispatch.

Yeah banggood is much better than gearbest which basically in my experience rips you off 20 to 25% of the time by sending broken item or dollar adapter in box instead of whatever or lost or etc etc. aliexpress is also good as is only middleman (bigger than amazon net worth: alibaba) holding payment to sellers shop till one gets it.
Nocturnalizer
29 Jan 17 #225
Are you going for the Nougat version of that? (assuming one exists). I've been thinking of doing the same. I don't mind the Indian ROM but if I can get something closer to stock Android I'd definitely prefer that.

While Nocturnalizer who kindly responded he got his via DHL choosing expedited shipping, others who received theirs by normal free option, do not have the time to say how they got theirs. However I think it is by Royal Mail as the aftership tracker "sometimes" jumps to royal mail from swiss post since this morning but says tracking not available yet. I think this means the last batch leaving China on Friday has landed in UK and will be going to post depos and delivered within the next few days.

I came across some interesting resources about Z2, but like our "certain friends" who could not be bothered to type a couple of words, I might not have time (which takes quite longer) to dig the links up and post them, either. Also deleted my many resources links post on page3 in their honour. :smirk:

I have to say, this is a lovely phone. Very fast in opening apps, all operations feel smooth and buttery. ZUI isn't great but easy enough to deal with, and helped a tad with something like Nova Launcher. U-Touch is surprisingly effective once you get used to how strange it is to navigate your way around with one button.

I wish the experience was closer to stock Android (and I can always flash a custom rom if I'm really hurting for that), but for £160 I'm damn impressed with the tech you get here.

Was running an Indian official ROM but ZUI is sh*t, changed it to mokee and everything is very good

Built so well and there is no rattling, creaking or anything like that. Buttons are nice and clicky. Tactile feedback is great. Screen can get very bright and I had no issues reading in bright sunlight.

Your items and mine HAVE been handed over by BangGood. It is right there in the tracking, the oldest thing on 14th January is when the shipping number was generated, nothing was handed over at that stage, then on 20th January it updated to "item received" by the courier, meaning it was handed over by the seller. The current status is 20th January at the Hong Kong sorting centre. Chances are high it will ship out from Hong Kong within a few days. My last order took 5 days (3 working days) to go from arriving in Hong Kong to being in Europe, and an extra day to be en route to my local Royal Mail depot with 1 more day for delivery. On this basis I would expect it to be shipped from Hong Kong either Monday or Tuesday, but we might not be updated until it gets to Europe at the end of the week. No guarantee obviously, but highly likely I think based on my past orders.

If you want to know what an order looks like when it never gets handed over by the sender, here is one I placed before Christmas, this is all the tracking on the item and is the red detail so it never left the supplier at all, the courier never collected it:

elTuco
21 Jan 17 #162
They told me they will not get phones before new year and all are on back-order. As soon as I said I want refund due to possible travel in Feb (genuinely), she generated a tracking code and shipped status. Once the code is generated and tracking code issued by banggood and status changed to "shipped", the refund button disappears from the site and android app which is how she stopped me getting refund. She did it very fast, too fast.

aftership is more reliable than flytexpress, but it says pending and no code recieved by chinapost yet:

https://track.aftership.com/
elTuco
21 Jan 17 #161
I did not say they make up tracking codes. I said tracking code does not ALWAYS mean an actual item was handed over by the seller. Large scale sellers can issue tracking codes with some dispatch services digitally for items before actually handing anything over. This is a well known fact by many including more experienced buyers here on HUKD.

10 days ago or more, was not near new year. I suspect as they told me in an email, they will not get this phone before Jan 27th which is chinese New year holiday start-date and impossible for delivery in the communist state with nationalised post system. Hence after 2nd of Feb which means after weekend, 6th of Feb is the earliest and even then all hell is broken lose because nothing gets done till a couple of days after due to backlogs etc.

That is how china new year is. She said they do not have this in stock before their new year, I still believe her. So lets not go round making up fake quotes. Tracking codes are sometimes generated before items are handed over. This is a fact. Once the item is picked up, the digi label and pre-generated tracking code will be valid. It is not fake but nothing could have been handed over. Otherwise 11 days ago was not Rooster year chaos period yet. The containers are not shipping containers but small plane sized ones. This case could be either, merely codes were generated or phones were handed over, I believe the former because of their email but could be latter too.

Banggood sells lots to Europe and much through Swisspost as our codes are. It would take much less than 12 days to fill one. As banggood told me, they do not have this batch of phones yet at this price but on Back-order, probably after a fortnight from now after their hols.

All the red means it's stuck in a air freight container in HK. Basically what happens is all packages are stored in containers until full then shipped out on a flight. With the Chinese new year there's a backlog.

Hopefully ship out before NY but most likely after NY.

You can can't make up tracking data, well I hope you can't. So the parcels have been dispatched but are stuck in a shinny container somewhere in HK, the tracking data shows this.

If listing your tracker, you have to say which part is RED, ie: current location. As you see mine is at stage 1 still like others (is yours too?).

Despite me ordering later than most of you guys, see my first line is a week later on 20th Jan than y-shah's 13th Jan and yet we all seem to be stuck on line 1 and why I wrote the previous post. I don't think they have yet received this batch for this sale and they will get it after new year, probably 6th to 10th of Feb and then will take another 2 weeks of actual transit to arrive, near the end of Feb. If anyone gets their stage 2 or later RED, let us know here.

I got my tracking number from banggood android app jumping to track17 site. I also got the first line in flytexpress website too, first said item in Guangzhou yesterday then today same 1st line said item in HongKong.

I had asked them when it iwill be dispatched. She said new stock on 27th, which is nonsense as it is holiday there and basicallty says no stock till Feb. I said if it takes too long to refund me with Chinese New Year from 27th to Feb 2nd or 3rd. She suddenly said we got stock an item was shipped in status.

The first line in many tracking sites does not ALWAYS mean item was handed over. It can mean the sender just issued a tracking number and gave it to couriers. I suspect none of these stuck on first line within flytexpress are handed over by banggood to chinapost then to be posted for Swisspost.

I suspect they are gathering a lrge enough batch to either order from Lenovo wholesaler middleman at a cheap rate or there are delays in stocks. If anyone's status progresses to 2nd line let us know and when you bought and we can see if later buyers like me got the same stage.

Stcok might actually materialse and might actually be handed over to Chinapost before Jan 27th, even then chinapost shuts down for a week for new Rooster year. But I suspect No actual phone will be given to post until the end of first week of Feb. If you google flytexpress first line and half of tracking and by banggood, you see first line date is usually a day or two before day two. So people who are stuck pon first line for over a week means PROBABLY no phone has been handed over and merely registered numbers for post have been generated by bnggood and sent to chinapost. Sone in feedbacks got it in ten days to UK/Europe and some had to wait a month. With apparently stock problems as they told me for this phone and chinese new year which is not just aweek but huge backlogs to sort too, I do not expect rapid progress and flight out of china in tracking any time soon.

Contact them, easy from android app, and ask what the hell is going on and we all share info here.

For the price these are decent phones I've got one and I can see a noticeable difference on small things like camera pictures and general response times in flicking between apps, it's not as good as others in its league.i also found the WiFi to be a little temperamental at times and hotshot never really worked too well so I gave up. Other then that it was decent mid range phone.

It means the package has been scanned and is now ready to be shipped. If you used the free airmail option it can take up to a month before it arrives. Thanks for the info. I need nova too and if ending up with ZUI nougat, will have to use nova anyway. I might end up with resurrection too though. I'll skip xposed this time. For a couple of days I'll just use the phone as is and arrives to make sure it's not faulty and get a gauge for later. First of all I'll have to get it as it's on "back-order" status. Not looking forward to downsize from 5.5" to 5" screen, though should be more handy. Thanks again.

Thanks for your contribution! Really recommend everyone interested in this phone to browse zukfans and xda (the forum is called ZUK Z2 Pro, but it's for both Z2 and Z2 Pro).

As for the ROMs, ZUI is decent albeit a bit young, hopefully with Nougat they'll make it more homogenous. I found it a bit mixy-matchy. They took parts from various ROMs but haven't found a coherent theme to tie them all together, that's not that terrible a thing but I think there's better offerings. Though I will flash official Nougat ROM once that comes out, to check it out.

I've heard good things about the moKee and it's nice that it's fully open source, but I haven't tried it myself so I'll refrain from commenting. From what I've seen it looks like there's a lot of active development so I might have a go soon.

I'm a bit biased here, but for me, Resurrection Remix is where it's at. Been running it on the Nexus for about 6 months. Basically cyanogenmod with a ****-ton of in-built customization options and also really stable. Pair that with the Nova Launcher and pretty much everything in my phone is customizable - and I take full advantage of that.

I got this phone from banggood (same link as above) and it arrived last week (about 2.5 weeks delivery time) with no customs charges to pay.

I got it in white and I was a bit concerned before it got here that I'd hate the black line around the screen but honestly it's so thin that it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Check out the white mi5 to see monstruous black bezel around the screen.

It came sealed in the box (though likely sealed by the banggood people because all the videos I've seen online the box didn't have the specific seal that was on my box) with the indian 2.0.093 ST firmware with the Play Store sideloaded and also multiple languages.
This was definitely not factory firmware and the OTA Updater was broken, though I did root it and look around through it and couldn't find anything that looked or behaved like malware/spyware/adware.
Bloatware was minimum and the software was snappy and stable, pretty stock looking at first glance, but quick settings, notifications, and menus were unpleasantly apple-like. I love the home button gestures, took about half a day to get used to them but they're now second nature.
All in all, one could use the software as a daily driver with no issues whatsoever, pretty well put together actually. Google Play and everything else worked perfectly.

But I personally didn't, I unlocked the bootloader (painless, thank you ZUK) and flashed the Resurrection Remix ROM available on XDA + root + Magisk + xposed + Nova Launcher, I'm too accustomed to this particular setup and I love the level of access I have over my phone now.

It takes everything I throw at it without even flinching. I got a ~130k Antutu score, not shabby at all for a ~£140 phone.
Another thing I like is how sturdy it feels. It's heavy but in a good way and it's great for one hand usability.

I bought it in November from ebay.co.uk, location of the item was set in UK (so no import charges) phone was shipped from Germany. Paid £184 and had free return as phone wasn't as described (no Google Play and Services working properly, no U Health app, etc).

I did really like the phone, it has great spec, screen is good, camera is OK..overall feel of the phone was very good. I did use previously Sony Z3 Compact. The U-Touch is great feature when you get used to after few hours of using phone. Now tempt to give a shot at this deal and flash the ROM, but if Nougat is coming out for this and Z2 Pro and ZUK Edge may wait few weeks and hopefully it will have English language out of the box.

Hi, I had this phone back in November with Chinese Rom and English language, came without Play store/services which was nightmare to install. As working for few minutest then not..etc so sent the phone back.

If you install Indian ROM (shame is not Indian version of Z2 Plus with larger battery) does give full English layout?
- translate all options, features, camera, keypad ?
- is U-health working?
- what version ZUI you get?

Or is a partial translations only to keep you "going"

The best phone Now is Samsung Note 4 you can get up to £300 for new / nearly new or used less 200
This my opinion Why get cheap chines phones with no updates etc
Get 2 Years old phone with all best hardware at this time It is still going strong and will be for another couple years
Got everything what other phones now do not have

I have dropped accidentally from 2 Meter high on tiles and I have marks on frame the screen is top quality very hard to break compare to new phones likes S7 or S6 or note 5 Anyway you can buy frame for £10 and double side tape and replace the frame and will be like new again
