I still think these are good and have thier rightful place. They are a convenience machine, great on a side table at a dinner party. More for infrequent use, in a rush an instant coffee. Great. I started with one of these pod machines and as my appreciation for coffee grew i started buying better but faulty machines on ebay, fix ef them and enjoyed a more refined coffee. Then repeat with an even more elegant machine, bells whistles milk frother bean grinder. I do love my coffee though.

I was on Omeprozole for 20yrs, originally prescribed as a student.. putting it down to stress now at end of course. I have recently stopped taking after a camera down revelaled lots of little polyps - secialist told me omeprazole would have caused them, she recommended I stay on omep. No chance I thought, reading up about them causing dementia in older people. I stopped taking them. Massive Reflux for about 2 weeks(gaviscone shares went up those weeks) then my reflux disappeared. Just like that.
Reading up, research trials had people without any reflux problems take omeprazole for a period of time, then stopped it. They, like me, suddenly got major reflux until it settled back down. Omep(+zantac/Lanzop etc) supresses the acid being produced but the body tries to fight back. when you stop, whoosh, excessive acid until it settles. I get it occasionally now but nothing a rennie/bicarb of soda will not fix. So I was on omep for 20yrs for no need. Docs happy to prescribe it, big pharma pushing it.

Maybe I should claim for being sold unnecessary PPI?

Well you show your ignorance by not reading my previous replies where i said these machines are a ripoff and i make all my coffee by hand using either my Bialetti Moka, manual milk frother/pumper or cafetiere - i was just providing the links to people who want to save money on these ripoff pods!

Youo bviously never even read the post you replied to where i said these machines have numerous faults and have a limited lifetime unless they are cleaned and looked after properly.

The reviews for all of these lousy devices say it all really. What you linked to makes worse coffee, takes much longer and removes the convenience factor (the main selling point of any pod machine). I've got to ask, have you ever actually tried coffee or are you just here to wind everyone up??

Thats interesting now thats the sort of info that should be provided so customers can make a decision - no milk no choccie is a big deal to many customers - thats why internet research before you buy is most important to avoid returns and disappointment.

I was very disappointed with my first machine "Nespresso CitiZ " and realised they arent really worth it by the time you have boiled done the pods you are just as quick making it the old fashioned way with an Italian milk froth pot and a cafetiere!
Besides ive repaired a few of these machines and they really fur up in England with calcium quickly and most customers dont know they have to be cleaned with a special compound yet another expense - some of the electrics and seals in some of them are really poor.

Life expectancy 2 years if you use it regularly - more built in obsolescence.
Just google the particular problems with each make before you choose a model or with anything you buy is my advice.

This does not do milk like the tassimo. Nor hot chocolate (I think?) nor tea (I think?). Not sure why people are comparing the 2...apples, oranges. Taste depends on brand/drink type/manufacturer of coffee of course. I have both machines but have yet to open this one. I will be keeping both as I like the idea of reusable pods but don't want to lose the ability of capachinos/lattes/hot choc at the press of a button. They are cheap enough.

When i first saw these things i thought they made ordinary coffees - having used one at work - they dont but ive never seen an ordinary coffee made without using at least 4 pods to satisfy my needs - perhaps you can post a link and I will bet the price is not cheap as I cannot find pods for long coffee Lavazza machines anywhere!

8 Jan 17 #125
Nail on the Head there, all in the DNA.

It's like the MMR. If everybody, yes everybody who had it developed Autism then it would have been removed from the market years ago. The fact is it doesn't give everybody Autism.. For some though, the MMR can be like a switch triggering the predisposed condition.

Point being, certain things which affect some people do not affect others. Caffeine intolerance is there, like peanut intolerance. Both do not affect me but definitely affect others.

You do realise it is the caffeine in the coffee that helps Asthma right? So why exactly would you say that asthmatics should drink decaf? Drinking "decaf" will do nothing for you other then maybe act as a placebo?

If you want to drink coffee to help asthma you should be drinking caffeinated coffee.

Most people buy these thinking they are for making an ordinary cup of coffee - its an espresso machine for ....wait for it...espresso coffees ie a single gulp and its gone so to make a decent cup of coffee you need about 4 of these pods - such a scam these machines are or how ill informed the public are before they buy!
omendata

Not really you can buy re-usable pods - two types - plastic ones and the metallic ones are the best so no need to buy pods for your machines just use your own ground coffee.

Buy a better machine and use packs of loose fresh coffee. Machine = £100 (approx) but each cup of coffee around 5p. Once you are tied into pods it's an expensive way plus the cost to the environment with all that waste.

Maybe because i ordered a cappuchino in Gargnano and Milan after lunchtime - they have some weird customs about which coffee should be drunk when!

I grind my own beans , use my Moka and hand pump milk frother as the real Italians do at home and have for years.
I have been tempted by all these claims over the aerobee makers second invention this Aeropress thing though but at £27 for a plastic tube it seems a bit far fetched to me!

A good coffee takes time and a machine doesnt do it justice - ask any real Italian family!
The stuff you get served in most coffee shops in Italy is tourist tat and if you arent Italian you will never get a real coffee.
Not me who said it but my good friend Martina who owns one of the best delicatessens and coffee shops in Garda!

Only stopped using the Aeropress out of laziness. Although it is quite fast and easy to use, instant coffee is even faster. The cheap cost to buy an Aeropress, cheap cost to use with ground coffee e.g. a tin from Lidl (unless you want specialist roasts) and ease of cleaning, make it a great step up in terms of taste from instant coffee, if you want coffee just for one or two people.

Yes the GP did highlight long term use can have undesirable side effects. Ibuprofen is another (which some people have to take regularly for pain relief), known to damage certain organs.

Coffee- it all depends what style and choice versus cost and effort someone wants. I have a Gaggia Classic for strong espresso, a Tassimo which was a gift and despite my scepticism, I really like it, apart from the packaging waste. If like a majority of the drinks sold in coffee shops, someone just wants a large mug of coffee with milk, there's not a lot of difference between many of these machines, as the milk buries much of the coffee flavour anyway. Even before the whipped cream and flavourings are added. (Which is why Starbucks use a very dark roasted bean, they don't need the coffee to have any inherent flavour). Don't forget the simple filter machine. They've gone out of fashion at bit but you get more range of flavour than in more concentrated espresso. It's basically the same method as the "pour over" style-the one usually made by earnest looking guys with beards and caps.

And re coffee in Italy: my experience is the exact opposite. For me there's no comparison between what they sell as espresso (in Italian it's actually just called coffee-caffe!) and cappuccino and what is drunk in UK coffee shops. For a start they don't serve it by the gallon in terms of cup size. Any bar there serving poor quality coffee wouldn't keep their customers. But each to their own....
SunTzu
4 Jan 17 #93
That's not true, the aeropress won't make you a true espresso, you can get close but no cigar. I use my aeropress every day but still make my self an espresso with the Gaggia too whenever I fancy one.

Yes really. I have a low perseverance level. It's funny how the Italians and Spanish don't bother with any of these strange ways of making coffee. Must be because it's so cheap to pour a litre of hot water through a filter of coffee and serve the whole family at breakfast. Yes I know I have a Melitta machine but that's because it's already loaded and I just press the relevant button and comb my hair whilst it makes my coffee, but I still need to put it 30 seconds in the micro. Being as I live alone I can afford these eccentricities.

This is total nonsense I agree. Caffeine in general is very bad for activating mast cells, which play key roles in various autoimmune diseases. I should know, I have crohns, asthma, and can't tolerate histamine (which coffee also produces).

Whilst coffee has great benefits for your health, in moderation, it is not a good idea to drink it purely for a phantom cute for asthma symptoms. If anything, it will make things worse.

There's another herbal remedy that works wonders for asthma however, and also kills cancer. If vaporised, its benefits are significant. My lung capacity dropped by almost 30% after I stopped inhaling such vapours, and I had to go back to inhalers. Sadly the UK has yet to catch up to the US as far as these natural treatments are concerned.

Really? Worth persevering imo, once you nail it it becomes second nature and then when you add fresh beans (not the supermarket poop), it truly is in a league of its own outside of professional barrista machines costing ££££.

If anyone wants an excellent basic starting bean to try, Rave Coffee Italian Job. £12 for 1 KG. Freshly roasted. You can also get it on Amazon a week or two old (perfect time to start drinking once it degasses etc).

Aeropress to 4 cup, fine grind, 1 scoop for Americano, add milk to taste if needed.

Aeropress to 3 cup, equal amount milk heated, fine grind, 2 scoop, perfect latte with proper milk

To avoid warm coffee, use Sainsburys version of coffeemate (red box one not the blue).

Perhaps I should have explained that I was talking about having a coffee out in a café somewhere - seems to be much cheaper overseas than it is here - so very often you got whatever was brought to you, unless you spoke their language fluently enough, and espresso is standard fare so it became easier to start with and then I got to prefer it that way.

I suffered from it for months until I went back to the GP who decided to test for h.pylori. Test came back positive so I went on Lansopromazole plus antibiotics. That cleared up my reflux and going on Lansopromazole plus Gaviscon Advance whenever I feel it coming back on stops it developing. Worth checking for that if not done already.

I have cut down on the coffee and other stuff I like, such as tomatoes, chilli and onions that only irritate the gut but a little is still better than none at all.

I always had milky coffee of some type here in the UK, but when I started living abroad then it was usually disgusting with milk (sometimes 3 in 1 out of a packet), as many continentals drink espresso, so eventually I acquired a taste for 'proper' coffee., which made living overseas very bearable indeed.

You could try stronger black teas with milk. Coffee is generally irritating to the whole gastrointestinal tract. Tea generally goes down better for me, has a slower caffeine release and still works for fatigue-like brain fogginess provided I keep my cup topped up. Plus there's all the supposed health benefits or something.

Yes good coffee because you get bean choice but too fiddly for me, so put it in the cupboard and bought a Melitta, expensive but worth the outlay. Pod coffee is, well not very nice no matter what pods you buy.

Hi. Only drink coffee, hate tea. But coffee machines I've had only seem to give you lukewarm coffee, with cold milk. This any different?
mario999 to idturner
2 Jan 17 1 #36
Wouldn't say it was piping hot, especially if adding cold milk from the refridgerator. I find you also need to warm up the cups first.
jools19 to idturner

Yes this doesn't do boiling coffee. I put milk into microwave before adding to coffee.

I get it periodically. GP advised against Omaprezole tablets as wouldn't solve the underlying issue. I tried Gaviscon -no help. But Gaviscon advance seems to stop it immediately. Might be worth trying.

It's true coffee has an effect on bladder and bowel for many. I actually find the latter helpful, helps keep me regular. Which touch wood will be partly protective against stomach and bowel cancers in later life....

Can you get hot chocolate pods for this?
I'm not that fussed by coffee but like the idea of having one of these for when people come to visit.

Something i would have loved but after an extensive search online proved fruitless it seems only 1 brand make coffee only capsules for this machine meaning lavazza have a monopoly on the capsules for now...
There are self fill compatiable capsules on amazon which have comments of sucessful tea/herbal concoctions. I can see no reason why filling up with some good quality chocolate powder wouldnt work just as well for a small cup.

I have a bean to cup for home & use an aeropress when in a hotel or fishing. tbh the difference between makes is negligible. Yes the aeropress is that good. I've never seen any deals for the aeropress but they are cheap enough to be great value. You need an espresso grind coffee (my favourite is Segafredo) and to save a bit of faffing a stainless mesh filter.
Can't recommend the Aeropress highly enough.

What's the difference with this and a tassimo? I've had my tassimo for donkeys now but only use the espresso pods, heat my own milk up and have a latte.

Is this quicker? Nicer? More economic?

I know some asthmatics who swear by it as coffee is a trigger, many more like myself have several uber strong black coffees in the morning makes the difference to asthma for the day - caffeine contains theophylline related properties similar to substances found in BLUE ventolin inhaler.

Its all in the DNA, caffeine for many people or meds they are on are a nono. But still the taste is satisfying, I wish I could find a egg and allergen free mayo alternative as easy as the decaf coffee drinkers - I love and miss my mayo

Asthmatics should be drinking black coffee from 8am - 6pm every 2-3 hours, I recommend Percol Black & Beyond instant on the go & fresh ground or pods wherever possible, it does make a difference if you're asthma is well controlled with meds - it is not a substitute for controllers or reliever medication but it can help reduce dosage (which has has its own long term risks) of meds and other steroids, my body/asthma is defo poorer functioning without 2 very uber strong coffees when I arise in the mornings. 2 heaped like mountain teaspoons per coffee cup, not a mug.

Have one of these machines and love the Lavazza pods. The only downside of this machine is that you have to manually stop it dispensing coffee: there's been a couple of times I've got distracted and ended up with an overflowing coffee cup :smirk:
