wetherspoons despite the critics are the best thing for the pub industry for decades. A walk around London and a coffee and a cake in Wetherspoons is relaxing or a burger and beer or a soft drink is a far superior experience than the so called fast food burger chains.
But Wetherspoons are limited by the clietente as some Wetherspoons are located in deprived communities and obviously reflex this fact.
Another Brilliant deal from Wetherspoons. Thanks for posting.

Not sure why people seem to be so antagonistic towards Wetherspoons - if there's a Wetherspoons in a (and I hate to say it) deprived area, do you really think a local spit and sawdust establishment would attract a smarter and more polite class of clientele? Wetherspoons are everywhere and as with any pub the location dictates the clientele. I have no problem with Wetherspoon and think their food is actually much nicer than the food served by more pretentious chain bars such as the Slug and Lettuce, aside from being much more reasonably priced.

By the way has anyone actually managed to find this deal available anywhere? It's getting plenty of heat but can anyone confirm that they've gotten it?

I tried getting this deal in a couple of places when I was in town today. The first one I asked for it in said that they didn't do this deal because they were actually a Lloyds (The Mile Castle in Newcastle), which I have to say in all the times that I've been in there I've never actually noticed that it wasn't a normal Wetherspoons. So fair enough, they advised me to try The Union Rooms which is a normal Wetherspoons just a minute away. In there I showed the staff this thread but they said that they'd never heard of this deal, had no way of ringing it through the till, and suggested that perhaps it was a deal for Airport branches only (which we know it isn't). So with that I decided that I'd just go to Starbucks for a coffee, I'm not really that much of a fan of Wetherspoons coffee anyway. The cake would have been nice but never mind.

lol I agree anyone who wants to take 5 hours getting coffee should get the asss over to Waitrose where its 20p on an upgrade to large cappuccino etc |with card|) also you can get decent muffins for 1.50 + free coffee once u buy anything on the menu...the only problem with waitrose from a social point of view is you get **** like Tristam hunt in there being aspirational!!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Contactless payment takes a matter of seconds, compared with handing over cash (if not the exact amount) then waiting for it to be put in the till, and for your change to be handed back to you. Welcome to the 21st century.

Nooo. Pubs are closing because they are just that pubs and offer nothing but drinks. The survivors are those that offer "extras" such as Weatherspoons. I agree it sucks, but these are the times we live it, and they demand change.

I am a fan of weatherspoons, but this is actually true. The IPA I drink normally only has a few weeks left on the date, still perfectly fine to drink. It's how they price so well, and that's fine by me.

The reason Wetherspoons is so cheap nationwide is they buy beer and other products at the end of the shelf life that other pubs wouldn't go near

I remember that myth doing the rounds in our local pubs many years ago when a big Wetherspoon pub first opened nearby.
We soon realised that it was just a myth perpetuated by bitter publicans who couldn't hope to match Wetherspoon's low prices.
It's quaint that it is still doing the rounds.
I have never had to return a bad pint in a Wetherspoon pub or request a top-up. Returning cloudy and eggy-smelling pints or asking for a top up was almost the norm in those other wee pubs.

Do they still do this? I'm aware they used to in their early days but thought, given their size now, they'd have increased buying power so no need to go seeking end of life booze.

Even if the food and drink products they buy do in have a shorter shelf life that doesn't really matter does it as long as they are still in date and not past their best when they are served to you.
If it's in date then it's good and that's all that matters so why care about how much longer it would have theoretically been able sit in the cellar, store cupboard, or fridge for?

If poss please could the original poster confirm which Wetherspoons branch they saw this offer in. As Wetherspoons prices can vary in different venues I wonder how widespread this offer/price is as £1.59 is really good value for a large coffee and cake.

[quote=And thats exactly why boozers are closing down in their masses all over the country.[/quote]
Not really, that's down to pubs charging £4+ and supermarkets charging sub £1 - spoons are clearing up because they are filling the gap between traditional pub and home drinker. Offering stuff like reasonable food, cakes and coffee means they can keep the place buzzing all day and get the best return from their investment

Certainly there are plenty of these places blighted by gypsies and their ilk who know that they open early. It can be very unpleasant and frightening seeing these sorts holding court when you just want to take your kids in for a breakfast.

I worked/managed at 11 Wetherspoons over the years. I have no particular love for them and left a decade ago. While I have a few issues with them as a company I can say, hand on heart that their food and beer are not short dated. That's not saying that breweries don't ever send poorly dated stock now and again but any manager doing his job would refuse those products. If you really want proof go stand next to the delivery trucks and look at the stickers on top of the barrels that are coming off that back. I always wondered how stupid people are for not realising the next fact and often tried to belittle the **** customers who thought they were being clever spouting nonsense of short dated products. If you look at any of their bottled products which are often far cheaper than the local competitiors you will see there is the usual long BB4 date on these. Also their hygiene standards are usually (there are always some exceptions) far greater than many other pub chains and way beyond a lot of your local takeaways and restaurants adhere to. On the subject of clients - well thats just a fact of life, like it or lump it.

I've voted hot for Wetherspoons generally (nice food, nice beer, inexpensive, good staff, clean toilets, no music... in fact nothing to complain about really) rather than the pretentious coffee and cake (which will be good value, but not my cup of tea, if you will excuse the pun).
