Edit: price has dropped by £5 since this morning, now £201.60.

As someone who has used the Honor 8 would it be worth the £280 Amazon are currently charging for it?

Otherwise this might be a decent alternative despite the slower processor, lower screen ppi, lower GPU, lower ram, micro-usb, lower megapixel dual camera.

looks quite decent, only negatives from my pov would be the plastic on the back and thickish bezels
TheVoice to anthony212

It's metal on the back.

Edit: Not sure why the tech specs say no NFC, I've seen screenshots in reviews that show the NFC icon in the status bar.

pierleone to greazedlightning

Not really. You're G2 is probably snappier performance was. You'll have spend a bit more if you want a true upgrade. The Honor 8, for example, is a much worthier upgrade.

honor 7 has arguable a better processor. but this has better camera larger battery which probably mean nothing as it has a larger display, more internal storage. i think this may also get better software support as its a new phone. but no gyroscope for compass and apps. it all depends on needs if you want a smaller phone or larger is gyro is imprtatnt or not ect. personally i would pay extra for the honor 8.

It's a production model so whatever is showed does not mean it will be in the actual retail models, pretty much every reviewer are stating no NFC. Unless its a big mistake from the Huawei, assume it has no NFC.

Great deal, but unfortunately not for me...

Really, really wanted this to be NFC and have a decent speaker or front facing speakers! I think I am getting too picky/spoilt with what my next phone needs to contain, and I only want to pay around the £200.

I use me Nexus 6 for music through the amazing speakers and addicted to Google Pay NFC, as always forgetting my wallet. But it is now beginning to get rather battered and need a replacement.

SorJai to usy2k14
4 Jan 17 #30
Think it depends on what you need..

Honor 6X, seems to have bigger battery by 300+ mah, 5.5" screen 3gb ram etc
Honor 8, 5.2" screen, 4gb ram, overall slightly faster

I think 6X has a good value, which just makes Honor 8 a bit less attractive

Not an expert, but I believe it's related to motion/sensors, so driving games to steer etc. That may mean it may not work for fitness tracking, though I don't work in either sector. So I don't even know how they track fitness by phone etc.

To be honest, if you use your phone for simple things, surfing the net, basic gaming, calls etc - I don't think not having gyro will have a huge impact on your experience

Ignore my last comment about it being cheaper to buy from Europe. It looks like there is some sort of glitch on the website which means that if you add the phone to your basket and then change country, the discount gets reapplied. I've got it showing up at £177.11 on the UK site now. I doubt it will let me purchase at that price though.

I paid £177 too. With item and discount activated in your basket, just chop and change from the country of origin at the bottom under the 'international' subheading; swap between a country that uses euros currency to the UK site. Only seems to work on a desktop site. Just trial and error really

I was looking around on the website just to see if buying in Euros would be cheaper (it is) and when I put in my basket in UK got the discounted price. A Vodafone smart platinum could be worth a look. You can pick them up new for under £200 on eBay and has the specs you're after. Decent stereo front facing speakers, NFC and a lovely 4k screen. It's essentially a repackaged Alcatel idol 4S. Only thing that lets it down is the low light camera performance but that's common to pretty much all sub £200 phones.

Well my mum ordered herself one yesterday morning at £229 as a birthday present to replace her Nexus 4, so she's now speaking to customer services to see if they'll refund her the £5 that it dropped by later in the day, or at least waive the excessive shipping charge on one of the official flip cases.

The phone itself should arrive today, quite looking forward to seeing what it's like when I visit later. Did anyone else order one?

Edit: Also they've updated the website to reflect that it does have NFC.

5 Jan 17 #84
This does NOT have NFC or a Gyro. It does have a compass for GPS (someone above I think accidentally made out that no Gyro = lack of compass). It's also just a tad too large and past the limit for me. The honor 8 at 5.2inch has everything you would need/want but it's £285, which is a bit much for a chinese phone that will have a lack of support after a year.

The waiting game continues.

Why do people complain about bezels? If anything, they provide a welcome buffer for the screen for knocks and drops, that full width and curved glass don't. And the Pixel phones are getting rave reviews, but never mention the bezels, which appear to be wider than those on this phone.

The Mi5 or 5s don't support UK Band 20 though?

It seems almost every phone out there at the moment that is mid spec, seems to have a compromise of sort. A lot of the chinese ones don't have NFC and some no gyro. Some have less storage. I just got a P9 Lite the other day as needed a phone v quick. It has no Gyro and no 5ghz wifi which is almost unforgivable. In fact, I might return it. Band 20 is an issue on many of them too.

5 Jan 17 #116
If you want absolutely EVERYTHING, go buy a 400 + quid phone, like if you're looking for a mid price device you'll have to be realistic

If youre on 02, Tesco or Giffgaff, Chinese phones are a no no for 4G, true, but you are paying 1/2 or even 1/3 of sim free prices of LGs, Samsungs, etc... for the same chipsets, RAM, screen and body qualities, etc...

The Mi5 has NFC and gyro anyways, so the only issue (which is only an issue for a few) is no Band 20
Considering rock bottom prices for SIM only deals at 3, and EE's quite reasonable pricing for premium signal and 4G, I would say you have absolutely nothing to lose.

My mum has the LG G5, and I legit prefer the Mi5, take the plunge or absorb EU phone prices, the choice is yours.

This is a decent phone for the money but I cant help feel like everyone is being ripped off when I paid 2 quid more than this for my Mi5, a far superior device, with a warranty and paypal cover. The EU phone market is a con.

I am wondering exactly the same thing, thats what happened to me as well. I spoke to my CC company and they said that once transaction is charged to account and not just pending that they can open a dispute. I don't know how to prove it though, as didn't screenshot. The fact that they carried out two authorisations will presumably go in my favour though as it shows I agreed to lower price, and then vMall charged an additional amount. I was surprised at how relaxed vMall were about the whole thing as I'm pretty sure they can't just whack an extra amount on. When I pressed the buy button the lower amount was displayed. Who knows?!

I'm tempted by the Z5 compact but I'm not sure there's much of a difference between that and the Z3 compact is there? What are the main differences? Worth the change'

As for your second suggestion... Looks potentially good but I don't know much about the brand...

Is the product support as good as Sony etc?

Thanks for your help....

My Mum got her 6X today, had a play with it while I was visiting this evening. I'm very, very impressed. Build quality is very good, the display is excellent, it's very snappy and the interface, whilst very customised over stock Android, has some legitimately useful additions and is very polished. The camera is very good too, it takes nice, sharp images with impressive depth.

Oh, and yes, it definitely has NFC.

It's got the Snapdragon 810, on paper that does only look like the better spec. It's a generational leap from the previous snapdragon found on the z3 compact.

if you're willing to settle for 5 inches then there's a lot more options available, for example the x performance, for some reason is only 331 euros from amazon spain https://www.amazon.es/gp/offer-listing/B01GTM1GJQ?f_new=true&tag=kimovil0a-21 (scratch that - it's only the xperia x)

check out kimovil.com and you can specify exactly what you want in the phone and it'll show the suggestions.

As for xiaomi - no the product support is non existent because you'd import the phone from china. However, it'd be a lot cheaper to buy and if you have uk phone insurance, i don't see much of a problem. I'd say xiaomi, along with huawei are the best chinese smartphone manufacturers. They use snapdragon and not mediatek processors in their phones, their android skin is pretty good and they generally have a better reputation than the other chinese phone manufacturers. You'd be good to hold on to your z3c at the moment and wait for a true compact flagship to come around

Wasn't it just very early ones which had the bootloop issue? I only bought it in January last year so I'm not that concerned about it to be honest.

My daughters one arrived today. Am I being stupid or does it already have a screen protector on? - it looks too well stuck down to be a pull off. And I've already ordered a set from Amazon...
TheVoice

It does but it seemed like just a shipping one to me, didn't feel very nice to use the screen with it on. The ones you've ordered will likely feel smoother to use.

I am between this and the Oneplus 2. I want a sub 200£ phone for everyday use (no gaming). Or should I just wait a little longer for new models to be released?

You can, but this is fresh on the market so it really depends on what models you want to wait for.

My wife's arrived yesterday. Yes it does come with a screen protector quite nicely applied actually. Not a real edge to edge one but covers all the screen so very useful given I did not have time to order any. In the hand it's a lovely device actually. Will get it setup this afternoon and test NFC and Gyro.

Mine came Friday. Build quality feels good. Snappy performance. Fingerprint sensor fast. Battery life so much better than the Samsung S4 it replaced. NFCed to Samsung printer fine. UK 2A charger. Not many cases on eBay as so new so it might have been worth ordering from Honour to get genuine fit and free postage. Heat from me thanks.

I have the P9 Lite and the Honor 6X. Bought both in the same week. My wife has the 6X. The P9 Lite does not have a gyro, but it does have NFC. The 6X has both. They are physically very similar, the honor 6X being a tiny bit bigger. There is not much in it between them in day to day use, but the 6X has a dual camera which is supposedly much better as one of the lenses is dedicated to capturing finer detail or something like that. I can't remember.

The P9 Lite only has 16gb storage which is a bit limiting. You can set the SD card to be default storage, but it will only move a portion of some apps to it I gather. Also, SD card will be slower than phone storage (slightly) even with the best SD cards. Would you notice it in apps? Dunno. Maybe.

The Honor 6X is better on paper in terms of specs in a few areas, but really, they are both brand new phones and therefore feel quite snappy especially since they are not clogged up with cached data etc yet. The finger print reader on both is amazing. Instantly unlocks the phone and makes me now not miss the double tap of the LG series to wake. The finger print reader on the back I personally prefer as your finger naturally falls there when you take it out your pocket. Ok, so people used to front finger print reader unlock will tell you it's better as you can unlock when it is sat on the desk....yes....but how often do you use a phone with it sat on a surface? For me, I use it whilst holding more so.

I'm just waffling to be honest. They are both good. Is the 6X worth an extra £60...probably not, but then I have not intensively used them yet. The pics on both phones look really good to me. If anything, the 6X looks a bit more like a fitler was applied out of the box. i.e. Less natural. Look a bit more vivid.

Apparently, the U.S. version of this Phone has no NFC, BUT, the UK version of this same Phone does have the NFC built-in to it.

2 versions of same thing? (confusing!), not so straightforward, right .....
