Depends what you use it for, I don't like touchscreen on windows 10 and find the surface quite cumbersome but it has a great display, this on the other hand feels amazing and so light
clarkeyi
1 Jan 17#3
just general work and light video editing. just looks good  . you are right the screen is great on the surface
I was tempted on the currys one at £1150 - £100 cashback £1050 for the 512gb ssd
What's the difference between these?
Or would I be better with a Lenovo yoga 14" i7 at £699 from currys?
jayd95
1 Jan 171#6
Neither is better or worse they are just different, with the x360 you get a touchscreen that folds into a tablet but is 20mm thick, the normal spectre 13 is 10mm thick so thinner than the apple macbook/macbook air.
That particular yoga laptop has good specs but has the same display and body as the £349 yoga 14, its good but when you are spending that kind of money it needs to be great i personally would get the spectre 13 if you have the money to do so

1 Jan 17#7
Thanks for the reply.
In regards to the touchscreen ones, this one is £827.10 with i5 256ssd
Is it worth paying for the £1050 to get an i7 with 512ssd?
And if I buy one of these spectres what's best warranty or insurance for it? At least 2 or 3 years?
I know currys do it £269 for 3 years for £1050 one

The 2 in 1 weighs slightly more but has a better battery. I would go for this over the Lenovo if you can afford to as it has better battery, build quality, lighter and stronger resale value.
jayd95
1 Jan 171#9
the difference between the core i5 and i7 will not be noticeable they are both low power cpu's and benchmark around the same scores, its the storage thats the bigger factor i personally would take the 256gb as it takes quite a bit to fill it with movies and pictures then any extra i throw on an external HDD that way you're saving £200.
Just had a quick look and general laptop insurance upto £1000 is £55-£60 for the year so i wouldn't bother getting the currys insurance

Just to be clear I am upgrading from Dell Inspiron 14z I bought on here 5 years ago lol. I5, 2.4ghz, 6gb ram, 320gb hdd of which I have used 115gb.
It's been needing an upgrade for a long time as it takes ages to load up (5 mins) and then another bit of time to actually be useable, the fan is loud, battery don't last as long, and also crashes often.
I need it for business purposes some that is fast to open programs and applications, load up, and touch screen for quick clicking, will probably be on for 8-10 hours a day.

The Dell XPS on paper is the best you can get.
However read up on the coil whine issues before jumping in. Reviewers fail to even mention it even though Dell have failed to address the issue over the last 4 years. I've just sold mine as it makes it unusable for me.
Dell XPS 13 9360 Kaby Lake COIL WHINING
I suppose it depends on your ambient noise and how good your hearing is but I can hear it from 2-3ft away during normal use and music playing on low volume (10%).

If you aren't too bothered about storage space I posted a deal yesterday for an acer ultrabook that I have bought myself for £460 gets great reviews , has a full hd ips display and is as thin and light as a MacBook Air and 11 hours battery life
Been doodling on a decision for a few years from the sound of that dell laptop :P , Go for the x360 the touchscreen version as it has a better battery life which is good for your needs , stick with the 256 gb you won't need any more than that and if you do I tend to store movies on a pen drive or external hdd

@jayd95 Why are you posting every single deal from AO.com??? Do you work for them or something?
People would be mad to spend £900 on one of these over an XPS13.
The form factor of the XPS13 is just unbeatable and it's also better looking than the tacky black and gold Spectre!!
The Kaby Lake Spectre 360 I like though - infinitely better looking, more portable, small bezels, Windows Hello camera etc. That's a better XPS13 alternative if you can live with the extra weight.
My macbook needed replacing, after 9 years as a mac user i finally decided to stop paying the apple tax + the new prices on the new macbooks are ridiculous
So looked around for a new laptop
I paid £618 for Spectre x360 (i5, 256gb) from very during their black friday event
It was reduced to £798, then got 10% off for being a new customer
Bringing it down to £718 and then got £100 cashback from HP
Its an amazing bit of kit, the trackpad is huge and takes some getting used to especially as i am used to the macbook glass trackpad
I only use the touchscreen to shut the laptop down
Been using it for about 4 weeks now and so glad i bought this..

Recently paid £799 for a spectre x360 (i7, 256gb) through the Microsoft Store. It's also a signature edition so doesn't come with any pre installed software making it a lot cleaner. Very impressed so far.
Used a 10% student discount code and claimed £100 cash back with HP which brought it down from a £999.
This is HP remanufactured product distributed through HP Renew program. Remanufactured products are put through a rigorous remanufacturing and testing process to bring them back to "same as new" in terms of condition and performance. HP warranty and support from date of purchase. Product being shipped in genuine, HP branded (none retail) box with genuine accessories. Although this item is in excellent condition! No marks of use! Never Used! The micro scratches/smudges or small cosmetic dispaerfections, especially on the plastic parts are possible.
The HP Renew Program offers you a comprehensive portfolio of thoroughly remanufactured HP products that are a mirror image of new, at very competitive prices. HP warranty is assured as all HP Renew products undergo the same building and testing process as for new products. If you're looking for refurbished or reconditioned technology, consider fully remanufactured products from HP Renew, a better option since they perform as new and have the same warranty as new products.
HP Renew inventory comes from various sources but mostly from: excessive inventory from factory or discontinued products.
. HP Renew products are not to be confused with "used" or "second-hand" products. Instead, HP Renew offers high quality products that are completely remanufactured by HP. All HP Renew products are Factory-Certified to be as good as new with performance equal to new. HP even return it to its same-as-new warranty status. The benefit: Factory-Certified HP technology at a lower cost but with the same performance when compared to new products, and delivered with the original HP warranty.
£699 for the slightly older Broadwell 4GB version:
Its currently £826 for the x360 from AO which comes brand new, im not saying the renew products are bad its just for an extra £26 you get the bran new peace of mind

Personally, I'd go for that X360 £827 lappy over the (hideously ugly!!) black/gold one. Not only is it better looking but it's £60 cheaper. Only fly in the ointment is the greater weight. 1.45kg without PSU is a bit heavy for a 13.3".

I do have a macbook pro its 4 years old been battered and still works great, mac os is super smooth but there is no way i could justify spending another £1500 on one of them, windows bootcamp is buggy and drains the battery and if there are any programs that you require windows for on a regular basis then you may aswel just get a windows laptop. I wouldnt say Mac os is that much better than windows to justify the expense

HP Spectre 13 is definitely a good laptop but I would go with Dell XPS 13 9360:
+ Full size USB ports
+ Much better battery life (10 hours vs 5 hours of browsing for the HP)
+ Much better performance (because of the cooling system)
Better options out there to run windows apps on a Mac than Bootcamp, VmWare fusion or Parallels will allow you to run a windows virtual machine on your Mac that you never need even use as any installed apps on the virtual machine can be run straight from you Mac dock

I looked for a Windows Laptop with Macbook build quality, spent many months searching. The HP spectre's were on my list as were the Lenovo Carbon X1, the Dell XPS and a couple of models from Asus UX range
In the end the windows laptop I bought was actually a Macbook Pro Retina with the concession of a Windows VM running in Parallels for the odd non Mac app (although I'm finding less and less of these now)
Don't regret it and would buy the same again tomorrow.

Sadly there has just been a big price increase from Apple.
Iast year I picked up a 13" MBPr with 8gb Ram and 256gb SSD for just over £1000 (£1005 iirc) courtesy of access to the Apple Higher Education store. i see the same model now is £1449 from the Apple store.
you can usually get around 12% discount via the Apple Higher Education store so If you know a friendly student you are looking at about £1275 for the model without the silly touch bar, missing magsafe charger and missing ports....

Went for the i7/512GB off their website. £1500. Go to dell chat, told them I have Dell VIP which entitles me to £150 (10%) off but also that on Amazon they are selling the model for £1299.95 - it's a dell authorised retailer and asked them if they could price match it buddy. Said yes. Then he just sends an invoice, then they call and sale completed over the phone. Should arrive this week. Will let you know about it and the 'coil whine' if any.
Also managed to negotiate the i7 256 in rose gold down from £1320 to £1180 and normal silver to £1150. Just as a rough steer.
