I got about 8 pints out of my Budvar. Poured fine, first couple were a bit foamy. Got me nice and smashed. Would buy again

Bought the Old Speckled Hen when it was on offer before Christmas. Absolutely awful, never again. Beer was flat. Wrote to company and expressed my disappointment and received £20 worth of vouchers as i bought 2 kegs, one of which is still in the shed unopened.

Got the Budvar at Christmas and it was absolutely awful to pour. Bubbles everywhere. Only got 3 or 4 pints from it or there abouts as it was useless. Never again. Anyone have any tips on how to use correctly as they seem rubbish?

Open the air value at the top until it clears out all the pressure then leave it semi open when your using it. Close it backup if your not using them for while, rinse and repeat.
Took about 3 half pints before I twigged on, still let the brother in law pour a few pints of pure head before I told him :stuck_out_tongue:

Personally from kegs real ale is good but needs to be drunk within 2 days in my experience. You should get nearly 9 pints if my maths is correct. I got a Budvar one before Christmas and I would not get one again too fizzy beer all over the place head was too big on the pints and made me ill as I'm sure it went off the next day. This is a good deal though heat added

Put the other end of the catheter into the Budvar keg and you have perpetual motion.

They used to do a lager one of these, think it was Heineken. Was great for parties but think it has now been discontinued. Shame really as not an ale fan.

I'd have had the Hobgoblin Blonde. Less keen on the darker one. The Blonde's a nicer taste

good for anyone who does homebrew & want to reuse the keg.
Though the 5.2 stuff is only £1.25 for 500ml in tesco atm..

With these kegs you always lose a bit as you can't quite extract the whole 5 litres, but a good price nontheless. Our local Waitrose has Hobgoblin Gold priced at £14..

Love hobgoblin (bottled) but from the cans it tastes werid (typical metally taste), is it the same from these kegs?
jamesakabob to djaydearz

Yep - the reason the cans/kegs don't taste as good is that they drop the strength to 4.5%.
Compared to the "original" 5.2% draft/bottles it loses a lot of its flavour and tastes more flat and tinny in my opinion.

If you're not drinking it all by yourself in one sitting you're doing it wrong.

Would sooner buy 10 bottles from Aldi at £1.25 each (£12.50) and not have to rush through drinking 5 litres

A mini keg should keep for 4 days so you only need to drink 2 pints a day.
To be fair though these mini kegs are aimed at parties rather than individuals so if you have no friends and aren't an alcoholic you're probably best off with bottles.

Had the Budvar at Christmas, thought it was okay... a bit gassy out of its can though - reckon we only got about 4/5 full pints out of it after it settled. Maybe I was serving it wrong :stuck_out_tongue:
How many should I have got? Quite tempted by this though!

Budvar is a lager, not a "real" beer so comparable to Foster's, Carling and the like rather then a beer/ale like Hobgoblin.
Great deal for a mini keg.

I can't confirm if national, but did see the Budvar keg reduced down to £12 yesterday in Oxted
(I have to question other HUKD members tastes, as the deal before Christmas several people commented how great Budvar was - I got 2 kegs and thought it tasted quite rancid. Like cheap all-inclusive holiday beer - each to their own)
Opening post
Traditionally craft brewed with Chocolate & Crystal malts & a blend of Styrian, Goldings & Fuggles hops. A full-bodied ruby beer that delivers a delicious chocolate toffee malt flavour, balanced with a moderate bitterness & an overall fruity, mischievous character.
