If you are going to go to Iceland, then hiring a campervan or motorhome is the BEST way to do it. I eloped last year to Iceland and spent just over 2 weeks around Iceland in a motorhome, including driving round on the day of the wedding before the ceremony at 9pm! It’s an amazing country to visit and I’d really recommend heading over to the Westfjords too which have some amazing scenery. Driving is easy, mainly you stick to the ring road so you can’t really get lost!
I’ve included in this price a camping card which allows you to camp at many different sites across Iceland, as in – park up the campervan and use the facilities. Do not just park up on the side of the road, ESPECIALLY if you have no shower/toilet facilitators. Not only is it disrespectful to the people of Iceland, it is damaging to the countryside and it is now illegal. The camping card is great as you get up to around 28 nights of camping and I was able to sell my card after my trip and got over half back on what I paid for it. June is a lovely time to go, I was there last year end of May early June and it was lovely, gorgeous lupins, snow capped volcanos – can you tell I enjoyed it?

I’ve also included excess insurance as Iceland has some pretty extreme weather and roads can be gravel so it is good to have excess insurance. I was thankful I took it out as after over two weeks of driving on the last day I managed to rip the bumper and taillights off the motorhome, major damage after there was a huge hole in a car park! If you don’t want this then you can take of the Questor insurance (note, this is cheaper than taking out the insurance excess with the rental company).

Trip idea: After landing, head to Reykjavik to collect the campervan and I’d head straight out of the city to join the ring road, stopping at the Bonus supermarket en-route for groceries. Depending on your itinerary, I’d head South, but there is so many gorgeous places to see you’ll be stuck for choice, the black sand beaches and gorgeous fjords – if anyone wants any specific tips, just shout. In my opinion, the Blue Lagoon is overrated, but there are plenty of other hot pools such as Myvatn Lakes and the ‘hidden’ pool near to Skogafoss, but you can take your pick. You’ll return to Reykjavik on 13th June where you will drop off the campervan and have a final night in the city at ‘I sleep Reykjavik’ before making your way to the airport on 14th June.

We hired a car and drove around Iceland, stopped when we wanted and took in the scenery....unspoilt surroundings, easy driving and zero traffic. Would definitely recommend it.....Although we did it when it was -17 degrees

Yep, it was epic, got married at 9pm in the evening next to an unknown waterfall surrounded by baby lambs, snow capped volcanos and fields of purple lupins. No, I don't working for STA.

You can eat out fairly cheaply but drinks at pubs/clubs are horrendously priced.

Sounds like a great place to go, is it feasible to position yourself in the centre and do day trips?
rachelandgromit to jumpinoffthbed
7 Jan 17 1 #17
Centre? If you mean from Reykjavik then not really. Iceland is so vast I think it would be difficult.

We ate out once in just over 2 weeks and found it quite expensive but we were able to cook all our meals in our motorhome - if you find farmers markets you can get produce reasonably priced although Bonus and Netto were good value. Get any alcohol at duty free in the airport as it is very expensive for alcohol. We got a bottle of Amaretto when we arrived.
generationz to jumpinoffthbed
11 Jan 17 #38
You don't want to position yourself in the centre, nothing but wilderness and glaciers. We've stayed in Reykjavik twice and visited plenty of amazing places driving from there but our next trip will be a circuit of the island to get to those places that were too far away.

Baby lambs? As opposed to grown up lambs? :stuck_out_tongue:

7 Jan 17 1 #16
What a great deal. I would love to visit Iceland again to do this but the exchange rate makes such a difference to the cost of eating out. I last visited oct 2012 and got 189 krona to the pound. Currently only 133 krona so a massive 30 per cent more expensive. Obviously you can cook all your own meals but the quality of ingredients there is so good and the food is delicious!
rachelandgromit
7 Jan 17 1 #18
Yep :stuck_out_tongue: I define baby lambs as cute little ones just born and older lambs not cute just lambs. I also have the same theory for baby calves, baby kittens etc! Depends on the cuteness

is there a minimum age for the rental of the camper van?
rachelandgromit to FantaPants6661

The kuku campers website gives an option for aged 20 and upwards so as long as you aren't under 20 you should be fine.
rachelandgromit
7 Jan 17 #23
The Solstice is 16-18th June. You are only in the campervan for a week and you can look at the other options that Kuku offers as they do have better ones for extra. When I went I hired a motorhome with Airbnb so it was a fair bit more expensive but convenient, if it hadn't been my wedding/honeymoon I'd of probably gone for a camper. The campsites we used were very clean and there are lots of swimming pools too for showers etc.

That's how I spent my wedding and honeymoon! Driving a motorhome in a wedding dress with a Lonely Planet, stopping off briefly at a café eating a panini in the back of motorhome surrounded by Icelandic horses. Actually it was epic! Just a minor correction though, in June it isn't freezing, it was really pleasant.

If you zoom in to the picture in post #2 you can see us next to the waterfall on our wedding day (this was around 830pm in the evening).

We got married on 1st June, so to give you an idea of scenery at this time of year here are a few snaps. It was actually suprisingly warm and most of these pictures were taken in the evening but it was 23 hours of daylight.
