The fact that you can even buy 'Day 1' editions of every game, console and accessory weeks or months after release for a fraction of the price is just testimony to how much of a ripoff these are at RRP :')

Every game is independent from each other. If you like any kind of action adventure games then you might really like this one. Finished it over a month ago and even trailers such as the one below still give me goosebumps and make me feel like playing it again
If you want to jump into the series I'd recommend FF7 or FF8 on ps1 and pc. Or FFX on ps2 or pc. FF7 will get a remake next year so you can probably wait for that. Definitely STAY AWAY from FF13
