I've been searching for a 15.6" screen powered by a Quad Core i7 processer with a dedicated graphics card, decent RAM and SSD, ultrabook dimension and weight and clothed in aluminium silver with all day battery life.

That is a big ask and they don't come cheap. I absolutely did not want the spec to be presented in the form of a bulky gaming looking laptop.

So with the 2017 version of the Dell XPS 15 being launched (9560), the 2016 version are fast disappearing (9550). In fact Dell now only sell 2 basic versions of the 2016 version (9550). So if you wanted a 500GB SSD, you have to pay the premium to but the 2017 version.

Options buying form Dell:
9550: i7-6700HQ, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, GTX 960M: £1,299
9560: i7-7700HQ, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050: £1,449
9560: i7-7700HQ, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1050: £1,599

If you are a student, or at times it might be pos that Dell would offer discount offers for £100 off or even up to 10% off.

So with 10% off it would be options buying form Dell:
9550: i7-6700HQ, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, GTX 960M: £1,169
9560: i7-7700HQ, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050: £1,304
9560: i7-7700HQ, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1050: £1,439

So the offer from John Lewis is for:

9550: i7-6700HQ, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, GTX 960M: £1,300

My understanding is the 9560 (2017 version) does not have ground-breaking improvements but evidently is has better spec technically including battery. I would be happy with nearly the top spec for less money. Ideally for less than £1000.

The temptation to spend an extra £100-£200 has taken me form looking for a £500 laptop to £1000!! I can't be continue that journey upward indefinitely.

Happy to hear suggestions from others. Please do share the link when you state you can have more for less and please don't compare apples with pears.

Oh, and please note that John Lewis 90 day return is shrinking to 35 day return from tomorrow.

Product information

Boasting a borderless display, this XPS 15 notebook by Dell is one of the smallest 15-inch laptop ever made. This means that you get to enjoy impressive visuals on a 15-inch screen housed within a laptop that's closer to 14 inches - it's pure magic. On top of its svelte dimensions, the XPS 15 laptop is exceptionally light so you can stay entertained even when on the move.

Powerful processor
Equipped with the 6th-generation Intel® Core™ processor and 16GB of RAM, the XPS 15 has the power and speed to keep up with your demands. Open files and programs quickly, plus seamlessly switch between applications and web pages without delay. Teamed up with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, your PC will grant you unprecedented responsiveness.

Superior SSD
PCle is a new kind of SSD technology that promises 94 percent increase in read, 23 percent increase in write speed versus standard, older generations of solid state drives. SSDs are much faster than regular hard drives, and don't use moving parts to work, making them more reliable, too.

Incredible visuals
NVIDIA's 960 graphics card with 2GB GDDR5 video memory works to deliver stunning graphics without lag, so you can fully enjoy movies and video games. The GTX features a range of impressive technologies like GameWorks technologies for fluid, life-like visuals and GeForce Experience for quick gaming optimisation.

Improved connections
Enjoy the built-in Thunderbolt™ 3 port to quickly charge your laptop, connect external devices (including support for up to two 4K displays) and rapid data transfer as its 8 times faster than USB 3.0. On top of this you also have the option to use two super-fast USB 3.0 ports to add a mouse and printer. The HDMI port lets you link up your laptop to your TV to watch your video content on the big screen

So to seek the 9550 spec (i7-6700HQ, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, GTX 960M) for less, what are the options? This model has sadly disappeared from the Dell website and looks like they will disappear from the few remaining sellers. If the market was flooded, then may be we can sit and wait for them to drop in price.

I have seen it on Dell Outlet for £1,099. Students may get 10% off bringing it down to £987 (braking the magic £1000 barrier!). But I have not seen any XPS 15 advertised on Dell Outlet for some time. In fact it has been strictly the XPS 13 on offer which do not come with a Quad Core option.

There are very few deals offered for a high end i7 Quad Core. I don't want for Gaming but just want a future proof laptop investment that can multitask and handle video-editing and last for many years to come.

It is amazing spec'ed machine....
But is it overkill for a laptop?
I'll not vote either way as I am clueless if this is good or not.

I have this laptop and it's a beauty, bought it from Dell outlet for 1k-isk but 4k display, although, I guess with fhd the battery life will be better

Hey I bought the XPS 13 non-touch with i7 (9360)/8GB ram/256GB SSD for £799. It was a cert refurbished, do you know conditionwise how they end up?

31 Jan 17 #7
Those that don't need a Quad Core processor, and don't mind dropping the spec and would prefer something even lighter and sleeker with 13.3" screen size as opposed to 15.6", there is another interesting offer with John Lewis:

HP Spectre 13-v001na Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 13.3", Full HD, Ash Luxe Copper, Free 3 Year Guarantee, £990:
http://www.johnlewis.com/hp-spectre-13-v001na-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-512gb-ssd-13-3-full-hd-ash-luxe-copper/p2869268

I would go for the Spectre over the XPS 13 but for the XPS 15 Quad Core, I see no alternative option.

I will be honest with you, I have spent nearly 6 months looking for a decent i7 laptop.

danger of hot deals is you fall into a bargain mentality and end up doing nothing.

bottom line is the following are the best laptops for £1k price range:

- Dell Xps 13
- Dell xps 15
- Hp spectre 360 and 13
- Apple Mac book pro (i5)

I ended up paying for a brand new surfacebook i7 off ebay.

for ages I looked at the Xps and never bought it, I wasted nearly 6 months doing that, and have a backlog of emails and missed opportunity items (financially, socially).

it's all about what you want to use your laptop for, otherwise at this level they are all amazing machines, and you have a decent package that you mentioned.

just choose one and stock with it.

I intentionally am aiming for the FHD and not the 4K screen as it's a massive drain on battery and cost a good chunk more. Others would of course be happy to pay the premium for 4k screen and not be overly concerned about knocking 40% of their battery life. However, 4K option is not longer for sale unless you go for the 9560 (2017 model).

I have this laptop with 4k display and it is amazing aside from the fact that the wifi card is so **** it sometimes does not connect to a wifi network for a few minutes especially if you are using bluetooth alongside but i read that changing the wifi card to a different model does solve the problem

It's a luck of the draw, often times they appear totally brand new but occasionally there might be some light scratches/dents/blemishes.

i have bought 3 refubs from Dell outlet and yes, u might have issues. Mines were cosmetically perfect but one needed a motherboard change (xps 13) and the other needed a screen replacement (xps 15 - there where few death pixels on the 4k display -that most people would no even check-). The thing is u get 1 year premium support so if something goes wrong u get a guy coming to your place that just replace the component within 2 days...
Regardless the issues, I would buy again from.dell, saved £500 on the xps15 and another £400 on the xps13.

31 Jan 17 #15
ok fair enough. Well lets hope its worth keeping as it would be a major shame to receive one with dead pixels.

All things to consider.

You'd still have £500 in your pocket compared to buying the new laptop that'll be marginally faster so for some, that may be an important factor, though I'm not suggesting it's the best option for all.

Edit: if you're into gaming though, the GTX 960m is far faster than the GTX 750m.

I've bought 100s of Dell outlet computers over the years, not one has proved to be a turkey. Most recently I bought my wife a scratch and dent XPS 13 9350 with i7, not a single mark on it, what I've been told is Dell outlet pricing is based on original pricing, so if a refurbished was cheap to the original purchaser, it would be cheap on the outlet, I suspect this is why scratch and dent exists, just to offload the particularly discounted machines. My home server was also a scratch and dent, with no visible marks, it's been running 24x7 for around 4 years with not a glitch, hence why I took the risk on a laptop.

Got to say, the XPS13 is a lovely machine, it's not a lot heavier/larger than a surface pro4, but saved me over £800 compared with the equivalent from MS. Perhaps the screen dimensions being slightly wider and narrower is the only downside, but my wife isn't complaining :-)

Needing a battery is not necessarily true, my XPS15 which is 3+ years old, is getting almost as much time out of the battery as it did when new. It's a right pain to get at the battery though, so if you did need to replace it, it's not like flicking a couple of switches on the back and out it falls.

I've only just replaced it with a Surface Pro 4, more because at 3 years old, it's time for a refresh (and I needed something lighter), than because it isn't perfectly capable of doing everything I wanted. My XPS15 is lower spec. than this one too.

One thing I would say, compared to the Surface or XPS13, the old XPS15 is a not that light and certainly I wouldn't put it into the ultra-book territory.

But the thing is my one was a Certified refurbished (so I'm assuming it should have 0 scratches, as opposed to the ones marked "scratch and dent"). It was £740 (i7 7th gen/8GB ram/256GB SSD) and marked certified refurbished and only 1 in stock. The next up was £800 and the exact same specs but had 10 in stock.

The OP description sounds very much like a sales pitch. It's one thing posting a deal, but this to me seems like an advertisement. All a bit contrived.
CampGareth
1 Feb 17 #29
Worth noting the 9350 and 9550 only have 20gbit thunderbolt 3 as the chip's hooked up to 2 PCI-E lanes instead of 4 as it's meant to be. I think this is fixed on the 9360 and 9560 models.

Why should you care? Well, many thunderbolt 3 devices use a lot of bandwidth and so will be slower with these models. For instance you'll hit limits with external graphics cards, external networking potentially (there are 40gbit ethernet to thunderbolt 3 devices, hot damn I want), external storage potentially (2GB/s at most), maybe others.

-- Sad owner of an XPS 13 9350 with too much love for thunderbolt 3.
mbuckhurst to CampGareth
1 Feb 17 #31
I'll be on to the my next generation laptop before Thunderbolt becomes mainstream, I would have thought the market for devices to lug alongside your ultra-book, must be quite small. Not to mention hands up anyone who has network infrastructure that could benefit from 20gbit Thunderbolt, let alone faster. If I could afford to upgrade my house network, replace all my storage with superfast SSDs and upgrade my servers to be capable of delivering content at these speeds, I'd probably not be worrying about buying a scratch and dent from the outlet to save a few quid ;-) That's not to say it wouldn't be nice, but we're many years before Thunderbolt 3 is going to be mainstream - I struggle to max USB3.

The last two scratch and dent machines I bought didn't have a scratch or mark on, from speaking to other buyers, I know, they haven't either. Maybe there are some real scratched machines out there, but not in my experience, by going for the scratch and dent, I saved a further £150 from an identical machine in the refurbished category. This being the case, then there must be another reason for the extra discount, because it's clearly not scratched.

CampGareth
2 Feb 17 #33
I don't upgrade my laptops that often, or rather I do, but only when the previous one starts bothering me in some way. The XPS 13 is the first one I've owned that doesn't bother me over say weight, battery life or performance so conceivably it'll be sticking with me for a few years. That's why this stuff matters, who knows how widespread thunderbolt 3 will be in say 3 years now Apple are making use of it.

But I do agree that it's niche, the most likely people to suffer are media professionals who use external storage devices heavily, desk workers who like docking their laptop at the office to use external monitors, and nutjobs like me with access to 10gig networks at the office :P

been looking at getting one of the new xps 15 for a very long time (at least a year) is the 1050 much better than the 960m? it looks like it would be. Ive started to think that design isn't anything, does anyone have an experience with an alienware ?? as I have seen the 1070 machines for around 1200/1300 on dell outlet, this seems cheaper than I could build a desktop for. But are they huge massive and heavy? I just don't know what I want, sleek design or raw power ?

Fairly certain you aren't going to find an Alienware laptop for cheaper than it would cost to self build an equivalent desktop, even on the outlet.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have the 9550 is amazing 960 struggles on some of my Architectural software. I had a quote from Dell. For the alienware 15 and 13 with 6th gen 1050gtx for around 1400 to be honest they ate also saying the 9560 is not going to be vr ready and to get a alienware
