Everyone should read this as the Tories plan to do everyone as massive favour and install proper fibre broadband.. in 2017.
http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tech/how-the-uk-lost-the-broadband-race-in-1990-1224784

They had UK factories in Ipswich and Brum ready to go and get the roll out of fibre done in the late 80s/ early 90s, but decided to close down the factories, sell the patents to the far east, and opted for copper instead to allow US cable companies access to our market in the name of competion.. warning from history much?

Had a look at the manual and the initial tune is done via the app so as long your smart devices can run that it shouldn't be an issue. Only one device could watch live TV at a time as I understand it, but multiple streams of recorded content / your media on external drive.

Upgrade sorted. Using ethernet before WPS to the router seemed to be causing a issue?

I can see Samba but asking for a login ?? When Iuse Windows Explorer for \\noovo as per instructions it finds nothing ?

Any advice ?

Yup - I think it's just poor programming of the android app. I'm sure they could easily have added a sort feature (and indeed the other versions do sort). They just seemed to have forgotten for android.

The bigger issue is the series recording.

Sadly the app hasn't been updated since June 2015 and the Noovo facebook page hasn't had a posting since 2014. So I'm pretty sure development has stopped.

I guess our only hope is if someone can hack the software and automatically set a recording every week. Beyond my capabilities unfortunately.

Sounds good. So no down sides to upgrading? Someone said earlier their box seemed to be rebooting post upgrade.

Presumably the upgrade doesn't fix the "odd channel order on android" problem or the lack of repeated recording?

Planning to update tomorrow night, been a busy weekend, like every other day - just sourcing & cooking allergen free to have a balanced diet seems to be a part time job lol this is great though it makes it even easier for me to copy/paste than carry a hard drive around & plug another in for programmed PVR.

I think I will email the company and see if support is still live, being unable to set a record series is a drawback, not a major one but would be good to have.

Am impressed the SD wifi re-broadcast is great on my iphone 6S for picture quality, my Huawei tablet a little less and Windows PC is great until full screen or a manual enlarged app but still fully watchable a few feet away on the bedside table.

This has saved me raiding my 3K+ Help to Buy ISA by a few hundred pounds for a replacement TV and losing out, I even gained the 12" Windows PC for free  Well I say free but it cost me £60 when I bought someone the Acer Nettop which is using a 32" TV for a monitor.

Hope everyone is happy with theirs

After I updated the firmware I discovered the connected USB drive on my network. I can now play / copy / delete and add files directly to and from the connected drive. According to the blurb up to eight devices can directly access the files on the drive. This connection is outside of the TVman app. I could not find this facility until I updated the TVman. All the files I have recorded so far are unencrypted and I have converted one to a mp4 on my computer. So far I have only connected an ordinary 8GB flash drive to the TVman formatted NTFS.

5 Feb 17 #141
Lets start again^

Recorded items shows in apps but not WMP or Windows network. I assume you are limited to the one connected device at a time having access to recorded files, which for me is not a problem, but a disadvantage for some unless you have a external HD with its own wifi/ethernet link to the network.

I'm using a Seagate 1TB E HD (previously posted deal from me) which I was surprised worked as Android TV does not allow use of it without formatting it which I am not doing for Android encrypted media files. Just wondering if not all external recording devices are not all read compatible ? Or a TVMan limitation.

There is a free app Tivizen DVB-T (not the £2.99 one)that might work with this on iphone app store, based on wifi viewing recording from a similar product, same as EyeTV W - these are apps that may tune into the TV wifi signal possibly via your router wifi as these apps they would not know your box is a TVMan ?

Also check out these develpers other apps, Eye Tv app has eyetv mobile,

Really need to find a way of updating the firmware on a windows 10 machine, anyone found a work around to the missing chip bug?
richpat
3 Feb 17 1 #127
I live just down the coast from you and also get only 67 channels so the device must be not picking the others for some reason.
richpat
3 Feb 17 2 #126
I received mine. Scanned channels - missing a number. The missing are from two muxes and some from within other muxes. I am on the south coast and can see the transmitter (rowridge) if I stood on my roof. Tried 3 different aerials with the same result.
Used android app and the PC desktop software to connect to the device.
On the app the channels are in some random order but on the desktop they are in the correct order. Also on the desktop software you get the radio channels.
Made a couple of recordings to a usb flash drive without any problems. The .ts files played OK with subtitles able to be selected.

I attempted to update the firmware with a windows 10 laptop but had to disable some security to install the drivers, unfortunately the update program still did not work and could not identify the chip.
I then attempted with an old XP machine and found that the drivers installed easily and the upgrade program worked perfectly. After a few minutes the upgrade had taken place and if you run the program again it said the the device was already up to date. The firmware version number changed to BDC53DPPH08K04H11
The update resets the device and I had to re-scan etc, there was no change to the number of channels picked up with still the same number missing.

According to the advert there should be a media centre on the device which means you can play recorded programs directly from the device, this also allows a number of people to connect to the device to play any saved program or other file which you add to the usb drive. I could not find the media centre which is called samba when I had the old firmware but after the upgrade it popped up when I scanned the Lan with an android app called 'es file explorer'. I also found that I could connect to it by mapping it as a network drive on my windows 10 laptop. I added various files to the usb flash drive over the network and can play them or change them as I wish. No need to remove the flash drive to copy or add / delete files.

Out of interest, in case you missed this in the manual, if you want to change the device from wlan to hot spot or vice versa and you are by the TVman then its just a long press on the back wps button, easier than using the app / software.

I will now see if I can get the missing channels (all the BBC ones in my case plus a few others).

Hope this helps.

Does it work from a remote app rather than the physical remote ?
I know my Roku stick has a official app and a few apps that do it, doess Firestick not ?

anyone emailed Noovo already ? [email protected]

3 Feb 17 1 #124
Received mine and I have to say that i'm quite impressed with it. Using WiFi and have had no issues picking up signal.

The only disappointing thing I've found is the app is a bit clunky and not that easy to navigate, I also have the same problem as nathankw, the channel list is in a strange order.

The reason I bought it was to see if I could transmit the signal to my Amazon Fire Stick in the bedroom where there is no aerial feed. I know that this feature isn't supported but at £7.99 it was worth a punt.

I've managed to sideload both the mobile and Tablet app onto the fire stick and can access the channels through the app. However as both apps are built for touch screens it is impossible to change the channel using the remote. I've tried using an app with mouse pointer control that syncs with the Fire stick but that doesn't work either. Thought i'd let people know in case they were thinking of trying the same.

If anyone has a solution that would work for me then i'd be pleased to hear it.

So I'm pretty pleased with how it's working - but have two issues.
I haven't updated the firmware yet but these are issues with the software rather than the hardware so suspect that wouldn't make a difference.

The major thing is I can't find any way to record a series - not just a single episode. At least if you could manually set it to record at the same time every tuesday that would be something but I can't even see how to do that.
It seems like you have to remember to set a PVR timer every week which would be very annoying. Anyone found a way to do that?

The minor annoyance is that on the app (both mobile and tablet) the channels are listed in a very strange order. The windows app shows them sorted numerically which makes sense - but I cant' see how to sort on the android app.

Anyone found a forum anywhere where people are discussing this device?
nathankw
3 Feb 17 1 #121
As far as I can tell - you would have to pull out the USB stick. At least I've not found a way to access the files via wifi.
You might also want to convert the files as they're quite large. An mp4 will keep the quality whilst being much smaller and will play on more devices.
So worth doing if you want a stack of things to take on holiday - not so useful to do regularly.

Think I must just be in too poor a signal area (signal strength, as reported by youview box,is only about 65% iirc, not home atm) as I had same results before and after firmware upgrade.

As an aside,I found there is a menu for other Fw versions in the tool (right click in top of Usb upgrade window and then select more) so who knows what all the variations are.

Thanks for update, sounds good. As me, mainly recording - I cant see the point of paying for broadband for a youview box or catch up TV. Also for me a 3G sim & TVMan are portable and much lower cost all in.

Just got it this morning so early days. Not done a firmware update. Might wait a bit and see how I get on without.

So far I set it up in hotspot mode and connected my android phone with the app. It immediately did a scan and seemed to find all the freeview channels. Used the app to enter home wifi details.
Rebooted and it connected to wifi. Then I could also connect using the windows software.

Tried recording to a USB stick. Didn't recognise it at first because the stick was ExFat formatted. Reformatted to NTFS and it works fine. Did a few test recordings and they're good. Unencrypted - stored as .ts - playable with VLC or easy to convert to mp4/

BBC channels are working well. C4 is a bit glitchy - but that may well be my aerial which I've not used for ages.

So overall impressed with it. The app and software are a little clunky but I mainly want to use it for recording and it looks like that should work well.

I agree, my Freeview is Lite but very occasionally I get FULL Freeview from the blocks old 20+ year shared aerial - I am thinking of raking out my old booster from the cupboards & dust, as I cannot find a booster for the block only the leads to a multi unit that seems not to be powered, it seems when they built the block of apartments they must have got a whack from ca$h from Telewest after the 'planning stage' as all the blocks have the same cable wiring to all the properties on the outside, thankfully every other utility cabling is built into the block or it would have been rather unsightly.

Must find that booster. Must also get to Delivery Office before close.
nathankw
2 Feb 17 #100
That seems unlikely. It only asked for region (eg europe) and then seemed to scan all the channels. Unless scotland uses some wildly different frequency range which I doubt.

It does seem to need a strong signal though. Perhaps try with a signal booster?
s2onius

Sorry, only just seen this Q... The devices are great, I've not used them for anything except viewing freeview on. I have used it as both wireless and wired and both work fine. One thing that isn't mentioned and wasn't obvious to me is that only ONE device at a time can access the feed, so if you have two/three kids that want to watch tv via their tablet/smartphone/laptop etc then you will need two/three devices if they want to all watch at the same time. This is the reason I have gone for more - not sure if having more on the same LAN will work yet, but at this price it's not a big gamble. They are also good for camping etc as they run at 12v you can use them (providing you have a good reception/aerial) via a car battery/12v leisure battery etc and connect to it via the builtin wireless and stream TV to your device... I know there are catchup and other apps for this but they will eat into your data whereas these don't.

I think I paid about £25 originally, and they we're approx £40 originally (I think...) so, at this price it's a steal!

I am guilty of having a few screens on the go at one time, but only one running a TV

Kodi is an amazing bit of open source software. I have a network music player which synced with it no problem, giving me access to all my music.. it also plays any file you want to throw at it.

The developers have regularly complained about the people selling dodgy boxes.
https://kodi.tv/the-piracy-box-sellers-and-youtube-promoters-are-killing-kodi/

1. It's illegal.
2. The addons often stop working, and it reflects badly on Kodi, as people assume it's Kodi that rubbish, not the addons.

OK, so you might choose to install some addons yourself, but anyone selling pre configured boxes is out of order.. plus it's money for old rope.

We have heard this over and over from Ofcom, Labour & Tories - gave our network away and watched it's decline as BT shareholders laughed all the way to the bank.

The right to access affordable stable telecommunications coverage should be as important as freedom of speech itself. Ideally split BT and hand the network FREE to the BBC (as BT got it), TV Licence fee drops & becomes a Digital Licence with landline access - you pay through mobile or landline account per address, this gives investment to the network and less licence dodging.

Then frankly the Government/BBC could and should also be giving FREE internet access to BBC programmes & any government/approved website with any active landline where a Digital Licence exists.

The amount of money raised from physical business lines alone for the BBC/network would be like a lotto win.

And if you can only get Freeview Lite then you should not pay a digital/licence fee until they invest in coverage.

But things like this are too logical for the governments, establishments or MP's rolling on with the norm.

It's strange because my nearest city has Freeview Lite with Fibre at one side & ADSL Max and full Freeview at the other, digital economy my butt! Could not plan a drinks party in a barrel

PS) I'll give the link a read, prob know most it but I'm sure I will learn something, thanks!

EDIT) Given BT went private before the decision, BT could have sold its retail customers off and had everyone dependent on BT Network and made a killing, same as selling o2 when it jumped the gun because it though MVNO access would be forced on it - BT has had some idiots at the top table.

Having a device like this is very like to clash with your router.. unless you are savvy enough to change the band your router is using, which is a pain in the ****. Im really not sure what the real benefit of this device is, unless its for installation in a really remote location with no internet at all, and a satellite dish?

Everyone should read this as the Tories plan to do everyone as massive favour and install proper fibre broadband.. in 2017.
http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tech/how-the-uk-lost-the-broadband-race-in-1990-1224784

They had UK factories in Ipswich and Brum ready to go and get the roll out of fibre done in the late 80s/ early 90s, but decided to close down the factories, sell the patents to the far east, and opted for copper instead to allow US cable companies access to our market in the name of competion.. warning from history much?

BraddersB, just wanted to say, the tv would need to be able to run the TvMan app to work, it can't receive the freeview signal via wifi and use the "normal" TV freeview programme guide etc built into the TV. Wouldn't want you to buy in error based on my badly worded advice!

I'm looking for something that can record TV and radio as unencrypted files. Sounds like this might do the job.

29 Jan 17 3 #53
Had a look at the manual and the initial tune is done via the app so as long your smart devices can run that it shouldn't be an issue. Only one device could watch live TV at a time as I understand it, but multiple streams of recorded content / your media on external drive.
BraddersB

My thoughts too but struggling to see how you would bypass the tuning stage usually required when watching freeview on the tv for the first time?

BraddersB
29 Jan 17 #49
Stupid question but still unsure after reading posts and product page... I don't have an aerial plugged into any of my tv's (all smart) due to location. Does the tvman need to be plugged into the tv as well as the aerial to work, or could this be the answer to the location problem as opposed to paying for new aerial points for each tv? Current aerial point is located next to a plug socket and nicely behind a sofa so the tvman would be hidden away  - thanks in advance.

I can't see any mention of it supporting UK's HD standard, DVB-T2 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeview_(UK)#Technical ),so I doubt it records HD (just streams it from USB storage)? They have only DVB-T players in their Google app store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Noovo .

For those seeking to stream, the mobility version of this device (with its own presumably weak aerial and microSD storage, rather than external aerial and USB storage) is reviewed on Expertreviews: http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/tvs-entertainment/pvrs/1400916/tvman-mobility-review , where they liked it as a media streamer:
"For us, the TVman proved more useful as a portable media server than as a gadget for watching live TV, and we can see how it could be handy on a roadtrip if you have lots of children to keep entertained. You could easily load up a microSD card with content and everyone can choose what music to listen to or videos to watch from their own device."

Troubleshooting - http://www.noovo.co/save/1057.pdf/to/TVman%20Home_User%20Manual_EN.pdf

It has a lot of facts in that section.

<3 You can power by external battery!

Page 8.

USB power bank for on the go:
If no battery has been provided, it is also possible to use a Power bank device to supply TVman. The
Power bank battery capacity needs to be higher than 1500mAh with 1A output current minimum to
enjoy 3 to 4 hours play time. If you want TVman to also supply an external HDD from its USB Host
connector then the battery bank should supply at least 5V/2A.

Cheers, is there a bit missing from that email? Should be OK with roku as can get the noovo app via google play. I used the tablet version. The GUI is pretty crap on the firestick its designed for touch screens. Definitely need a bluetooth air mouse or a similar means to control it via the Roku android remote.

seaniboy to cliffio76
28 Jan 17 #38
Says it supports HD

Can TVman support HD broadcast?
Yes, TVman is HD ready and can transfer HD video (15Mbs max) to Smart devices and computer.
The decoding limitation of HD video is due to Smart device CPU performance and not from TVman.
- Smart Phone and tablet CPU can decode SD video (HD not supported on current devices)
- Computer and MAC CPU can decode SD & HD video

seaniboy to breslau
28 Jan 17 1 #35
I'm pulling broadband so it works for me on mobile only data, also some places cant get catch up because BT Group raided the coffers for twenty years rather than upgraded all the network to ADSL2+ as a minimum.

I personally begrudge paying for a landline I dont use where I have been able to use naked ADSL in other countries.

How much service does a ISP give for a one off £7.99 payment for catchup access only ?

I would imagine more

Any smart device will act as an additional TV at home.
Every family member can have their own choice of entertainment.
Multiple TVman can be connected to the router to propose multiple TV channels for anyone.
No dispute on who will select the program tonight!
Enjoy live TV anywhere at home. Finish watching your program on the bed, watch TV while cooking, ironing, gardening, bathing, barbecue, etc. TVman offers flexibility, freedom and comfort unmatched by conventional TV.
TVman Home is also a multimedia center to share your videos, movies, music, pictures in your wireless network. Multimedia center function supports up to 8 devices at the same time!
You are busy and live TV broadcast does not always fit with your schedule? No problem, you can easily program TVman to automatically record thousands of hours of TV on external USB HDD when you are not available. Your favorite show will be waiting for you!
TVman is also a Smart Private Catch-up which is able to record automatically all the shows you may like according to your center of interest: sports, documentaries, talk shows, movies... (available soon).

Hi again Seaniboy, I got one of these already but as it was open box clearance it didn't come with instructions. Do you know how to push the firmware upgrade to it as I don't get all freeview channels and hoping the upgrade will fix. If anyone's interested I use it to watch regular TV on a firestick in the kitchen as more reliable than the TV player app and easier than routing an aerial wire to it.

There are devices that can do what you want. At the expensive end theres a fully fledged NAS. At the budget end there are things like Verbatim Mediashare or RAVpower file hub.

These units are great, I have one already and it works perfectly - one word or caution is that you need a decent aerial, however that's the case with all freeview/devices like this. I have just ordered 3 more so I can hopefully piggyback them and watch on multiple devices simultaneously. Thanks OP heat added

Those specs mention dvb-t tuner but you need dvb-t2 for hd in the uk, so im pretty sure these wont get any hd channels, which i think is why they are selling them so cheap to get shot of them. Also freeview as a whole is slowly moving over to dvb-t2 only so these will probably receive nothing or a very reduced line up in a few years.

Still decent deal if you aren't bothered about hd or any future proofing...

28 Jan 17 #20
What I'd want it to do is stream my own media over its own WiFi, so I could keep it at the caravan and take my own USB stick along and stream stuff to the kids phones, but I guess I could just preload their phones!

It relays to devices via a wifi router or its own internal wifi the signal fed into it.
ST3123
28 Jan 17 #13
Not sure but reading the ebay description it sounds like a freeview tuner in a box, which interfaces with the router to output over the wifi. Refers to fta tv a lot so i suspect there is no way to connect a satellite or cable box to it.

Shame would have snapped this up if it could send output from a set top box instead. Nevermind...

ST3123
28 Jan 17 #6
Interesting device. I assume it can only send freeview rather than connecting to say a satellite or cable box and sending that around the house?

That would be a lot more useful imho since most modern tvs have their own freeview tuner anyway...

It records live TV...you can programme it to do so...much cheaper this than a Freeview recorder or YouView box that don't stream to non TV devices, it is also a lot cheaper to buy and add a cheap external hard drive or use one you already have (and easily portable).

This can also be used anywhere you can get a TV signal, glamping/caravanning etc to broadcast to devices.
GazmoX
28 Jan 17 1 #7
But this can only be used for live TV. What does it have to do with catch up TV!?
