About 85mm, a portrait lens, but they don't come cheap.

If you are short on space like me this might be a good option as the 50mm wont get full body shots, I have an old ef28mm and a ultra wide angle for this.

No. It would offer you something totally different. a wider angle view, but it's nowhere near as fast at f2.8 vs the 50mm f1.8.

Love my 24mm lens - probably the one I use the most in my kit!
Portability is one benefit, but the main thing for this over any kit lens is the sheer improvement in sharpness and image quality!

no, as a complete novice you should look for some sort of beginner guide (millions about) and ideally you'd want a 'macro' lens for close ups of near stuff.
you know that the number before the mm means? if not see one of the millions of guides i didn't link for redrain
if you do then you should know it not 'better' just different

Depends on how close. You can get closer than true macro 1:1 with tubes.

What benefit would I have using this lens over the supplied kit lens and setting the focal length to 25mm? Is it just that this lens is faster with the bigger aperture? Or a combination of that and it's small portability?

All of this is correct plus the fact that prime (fixed focal length) lens generally produce better quality images than zoom lenses, especially when compared to a kit lens.

This is about a 38mm full frame equivalent (24mm * 1.6) which is slightly wide angle. This would be best for landscape, travel and street photography especially as it's so small and easily portable. Not really good for portraits as faces look distorted and not very pleasing with such a lens. I suppose it would be OK if doing a full length portrait with some background, just not for close-ups.
For this price get it. If you don't like it I'm sure you could get all your money back on ebay.

I just received this yesterday also from Amazon, bought on Friday for £120 but used Amazon's BIGTHANKS £10 off so got it for £110, wonder would they give me the fiver off it :smirk: ?
Haven't had any chance to use outdoor yet, stupid Daylight Savings, but indoors it seems very good in low light scenarios. With the extra Aperture setting you can effectively have your shutter speed a setting higher or ISO a setting lower which leads to all round better low light shots.
It has a good field of view, not excellent but good and I do seem to get better shots than with my kit lens also set to 24mm.
In my head I imagine this would be good for night time outdoors shots since the the lens can naturally let in more light and it is just bordering on the wide angle variety.

Idealy, you want a "walkabout" lens to get used to how the camera worketc as it covers a good range of focal lengths. Unless you are specifically getting into macro photography, it's not the first lens you want. In fact, most people who get dSLRs usually get a telephoto next after a kit/walkabout lens and a lot of telephotos have a macro option on them.

This gives you a field of view that is almost exactly twice as wide, it's a very different perspective. They're better suited at different things rather than being direct competitors.

I'd recommend a cheap canon 50mm Ef lens on eBay, they do great bokeh (blurry backgrounds) for making a subject really pop in a portrait. And as the comment above says gives you nearer 80mm focal length

Though a nifty fifty on a 1.6x cropped sensor (APS-C), giving an equivalent of 80mm, would be a good value for money alternative.

it's a bit wide for that. a 50mm or 85mm would be a better option on a crop sensor camera.
