Unfortunately you would, yes. The phone gets gradually slower to respond as the apps hog the RAM.
If you're using it for calls, texting and camera then it'll be fine. If you're looking to use lots of social media apps, a few games, some photography apps etc, is want at least 2gigs of RAM.
A few years ago RAM was a minor issue - now it really isn't.

1GB of RAM? Is that a typo? My phone of 5 years ago nearly had that.
don't think so. since lenovo bought Motorola, they have increased the price of the better specced models, and under specced the lower end cheaper models, not what the moto g used to be about sadly.

In the REAL world would anyone, ever, ever, notice the difference between 1 and 2 Gb RAM?

It's a phone ..... texting, calls and the occasional internet visit.
I have a games console for games.
I have a camera if my photography gets serious.
I think that, in 2 years, people will be saying that 2Gb isn't enough and it needs to be 4Gb at least.
TomBoyNI to MrRee
6 Jan 174#17
Neither things really help with portability though.
You can hardly whip your PlayStation out for a quick game to pass some time on a train / bus / taxi / limo and a good quality phone camera is good for on the go shots that would be missed setting up your dslr.
The world moves on as does tech and your right in a short period of time people will want 4gb.
For what you need as mentioned above, texts, calls and the occasional internet visit please don't waste your time with this phone. You could spend £25 and get everything you need.

i managed to get the deal yesterday for 69 quid. Regarding the 1gb, it's all about how memory is managed and how background apps are loaded and unloaded, more memory just means you don't have to unload background apps, it does not necessarily mean faster processing, that is handled by the SoC not the ram. Anyway, have some great mate..

It's not a phone, it's a moile computer. A phone is now an app. If you want a phone, go to Tesco and browse the handsets with buttons on them.

woulda been nice to see FHD, perhaps a little far tho, but the 1GB RAM is shocking and unforgivable
anyone who knows anything about phones knows that 2GB is the minimum for even an average phone user, this phone will not be fast, and will not handle any type of social, game or heavy graphics app at all, it will severely slow everything else down
With phones you are far better off spending the extra and getting an actually decent phone, this rlly does suck as a device imo
its funny that people will shudder at spending a couple hundred for a daily device that'll last em up to 2 years, but don't blink at paying 40 quid for a takeaway or 6 quid a drink on a night out
kaizhu79
7 Jan 171#60
4GB is my new minimum for memory if I was to get a new phone. FHD also has noticable difference even on phones, just might not be as bad on this as it has a smaller screen.
Robbo11
7 Jan 17#61
The 2nd gen was only available from Sept 2014 but I guess 2 years seems like a long time in mobile tech years. I also have the 2nd Gen Moto G and am considering an upgrade but don't see this G4 Play as a big enough upgrade for me really. It might have double the internal storage (desperately needed it), a higher capacity battery and costs less than I originally paid for the 2nd Gen but comparing the speed of my 1gb RAM Moto G to my wife's 2gb RAM Vodafone Smart Ultra 6, proved to me that the speed difference the extra RAM makes is noticeable and well worth it. If my next phone doesn't have at least 2gb RAM it just won't seem like a worthwhile upgrade.

For most users 1gb of ram with stock Android gives an acceptable level of performance at a great price point.
I still have the original Moto g as a second phone and that one still flies along and it only has 1gb of ram.
There are way too many nerdy comments on this site when it comes to phones, tablets, computers and tv deals. Always banging on about specs as if everyone has the same requirements they do.
Sure, 2gb would be preferable but at this price point and for the average user this phone will perform to a decent standard.

No earphones and charger has a permanently attached micro USB lead
Phone takes a micro SIM (Had to cut my full sized one down)

there's no Gallery app - you are expected to use Google Pictures (I turned off auto backup)
There's no music player app either - again you are expected to use the Google music app .
I have seen suggestions to use Quickpic (gallery, free) and Poweramp (player, paid for) but not tried either yet.

Only ask as posted deal is coming up a higher price for me
I have the moto G first gen, never had any issues, but then i kinda agree with MrRee
I take photos, use it heavily for facebook/whatsapp/radio and to play chess online (if i am on a train etc)
Again, i dont really see the point in loading up loads of game apps on it etc, just have 1 or 2 to pass the time and do serious gaming on a pc/console.
Maybe there are some apps I cant think off that require more RAM. but for those things above 1GB is sufficient.
I received my "Shipped" e-mail early Monday morning (Jan 9th)
Tracking on the Moto website says that it's been "delivered"
Moto C/S confirmed today that it's with FEDEX and will be delivered by TUESDAY 17th January! wtf
Just hope that it's not too ill after the long journey! :smirk:
Thanks again OP
Box contains phone, 13A plug charger and minimal get-you-started instructions with web URL for more comprehensive stuff.
No earphones and charger has a permanently attached micro USB lead
Phone takes a micro SIM (Had to cut my full sized one down)
Most apps on board already. Google play asked to update before you could do anything else.
there's no Gallery app - you are expected to use Google Pictures (I turned off auto backup)
There's no music player app either - again you are expected to use the Google music app .
I have seen suggestions to use Quickpic (gallery, free) and Poweramp (player, paid for) but not tried either yet.
Radio does the usual spitting out of its dummy if there are no headphones connected but offers to let you try it thru the speaker, warning that reception may suffer.
