Great was looking for it, but ended up getting one from Amazon, works great if not a bit heavy.
I also found the official pen stylus for this tablet, ordered it from bhphotovideo website in the us. It arrived yesterday, great little accessorie.

I've not disabled anything and have experienced no lag what so ever.
In the event I do get lag, I will have a look into what you did. Thanks.

Yes. I've had to disable 33 apps, including system apps. The UI tweaks and Asus "branded" apps are terrible compared to their AOSP/Google originals.
Had to because they were causing stuttering performance and lag by running in the background. With them off the device is running smoothly.
Great piece of hardware but the software is not great. Mind you it's better than a Samsung!

Well for me it's an interim tablet until something better shows up. I need high performing Android 4:3 high resolution, and this is the only option that doesn't cost £400+.
I also ordered the Z stylus pen from the US, Shame I didn't notice they sold the tablet in the US, its he 64GB version.

Just ordered a case from Amazon, was tempted to get a folio/bluetooth keyboard one, but there we no reviews. So £7.95 for a case wasn't bad with magnetic power on/off. Free delivery since I bought the Roku 2 streamer too

Funnily enough I replaced my G Pad 8.3 with this too (which is just over Full HD FYI). Gave it a good run through in store to make sure I was happy with performance and screen and grabbed one.
I have been set on a 4:3 2K tablet for quite some time but everything bar the iPad has had woeful performance or excessive price to match. The Z500M is a touch more than I wanted to spend but I've not got much buyers regret. Once something comes out with a screen to match AND has the software side sorted I'll get whatever that is and sell this one on.
Positives:
Screen and performance are both incredible. Max and min brightness are good extremes. Speakers seem pretty good (for a tablet). It's pretty light but feels solidly built.
Mehs:
The ASUS Android Tweaks are not as good as stock Android. I'm also fed up of "white" as the primary colour for menus, but that's Googles fault.
Switching users kills running applications more rapidly than stock Android - it's not possible to switch user for 10 seconds and back as it is on stock Nougat. Probably a rare use case
Negatives: It's FULL of apps I do not use or want. Some of them can be properly uninstalled, and the rest can mostly be disabled, but they are still there.
Can't be rooted, and is unlikely to recieve any major Android version bumps.

now I'm experiencing an issue with the battery, it charges up to 89% and doesn't go higher than that. mm... starting to regret this purchase, I actually liked it. will see if they have another one they can swap for.
*update. it looks like it was battery protection, it now charges up to 100%. I had left it overnight to charge.

I bought mine as an upgrade to an LG GPad 8.3. I wanted the larger and higher resolution screen because I read a lot of technical books and documents
The 9.7" 4:3 2K screen on the Asus is a massive step up from the 8.3" 16:10 Full HD screen on the GPad when reading PDFs.

I bought one for this price in November. It's a great tablet and is considerably cheaper than the equivalent Samsung or iPad..
One negative note; the screen is very shiny and it's not completely flat which means I had to discard the tempered glass screen protector that I originally bought for it. I replaced it with a matt screen protector from Amazon which works very well and has a finish similar to that on a Kindle...
+Screen is nice, sharp and good colours
+Very light for it's size

Expensive considering it is only a mediatek hexa core, I would rather get something else with a bit more power if I was going to get a mid-high end tablet.
The resolution is higher then really needed and will have little benefit and just lower the battery life.

I'm based in Hong Kong and can tell you at the price PC World are offering its a good deal indeed - would check if it can be upgraded to Cymogen, but false to believe you can't update the OS, you can. Compared to Nexus 9 & NVIDIA Shield this is really good value and you get a full 12 month warranty - If had seen this last week would have collected for my daughter given US$ rates to the £, so definitely worth a Hot, if only for memory expansion capability, sadly missing off Nexus 9 and Pixel C.

My PCW had large labels showing as a 10.1 inch. When I queried it the staff were confused. It is though 9.7in but described a 10. Seems really nice and compares well to my Nexus 9, plus more Ram and something I would like, a micro SD card slot.
Surprisingly the charging port doesn't appear to be a standard micro USB. Is it a proprietary adapter or something shared with other devices, i.e. common?
I have seen this model on display at the Canary Wharf PC World which is quite a small branch. It has a stunning display which drew my attention, although at £300 was a bit more than I wanted to pay. £260 and I'm tempted....

The Tab A is positioned mid-range at best and this is high-end. If you apply the logic of 'what you need' then you can always talk yourself out of more expensive tablets; no one 'needs' this, or even a basic Tab E. This is just quicker, better built, higher resolution screen and has 4GB of RAM (though an unknown MTK processor) so more detail and less time waiting around.

I can read the specs just fine  I guess I'm asking what you're using it for that needs or significantly benefits double the cost.and for the record I was talking about the Tab A not the Tab E. the soc is made by mediatek, who are very well known for being reluctant to release the source codes required for android updates. it is the chipset used that limits updates not necessarily the brand. I would be much more optimistic for updates if it was a Snapdragon. Mind you, Asus aren't exactly fantastic at it either, generally one update if you are lucky.
tnm1975
7 Jan 17#2
looks good, but mtk probably means near zero chance of updates any mediatek based stuff I've had has been very good but has had no real updates. heat added as is top spec for money!
MediaTekInside to tnm1975

Why would it having MediaTek inside have any bearing on whether or not the device gets updates? Were the devices with MediaTek you cite produced by Asus? If not, why is you experience with them relevant to an Asus device?

I bought one and can thoroughly recommend it. The screen is superb. To use the iPad pro as a yard stick, the screen on the Asus ZenPad 3s 10 is just as good to look at. Absolutely pin sharp.
I bought this tablet to play films/TV primarily, not as a gaming device so I can't comment on the graphics capabilities for 3D gaming.
Feels very light for larger tablet even though they've used premium materials. It feels comfortable to hold.
There are a lot of preloaded apps on this device but no noticeable lag from what I'm using it for.
Battery life could have been better when in use although standby time seems to be really good.
The Z Stylus isn't bad either. It doesn't have the pressure levels of the premium brands and when used quickly, what happens on screen lags behind the pen tip by about 1cm. More than adequate for the amateur user though.
My only gripes are; (1) that tablets in general (including this one) are going down the 4:3 aspect ratio which is better for viewing websites, so they say, but unfortunately not for viewing movies. (2) I don't know if anyone else is finding this, but genuine Asus accessories seem to hard to find.
This tablet has a kids mode which I was looking for, but wasn't aware it had. This activates a safe password protected area where you can designate only the apps you're happy for them to use. I haven't tried to use in-app purchasing from this zone to see if that's completely locked off.
Looks good. Can you get a wee bluetooth keyboard with a stand thingy that this would work with?

I'm no expert but have been looking for a replacement to my 2012 Nexus 7 I'm still undecided over a 7/8" and a 10" so am dragging my feet. In the reviews I've read this is a higher performer than the Samsung Tab S2 so I would imagine the CPU and Graphics to be way above that of the Tab A series. Aside from that this has a metal body, twice the memory (both RAM and ROM) not familiar with the Tab A spec but it also has GPS and a finger print reader and also is stylus compatible all of which are feature the cheaper tablets are usually missing.

Everything. Just look on the net and you'll see... Processor is significantly more powerful, it's got 2-3x the ram, double the storage... The screen is 2k vs whatever is on the tab e.... Bottom line, they're not even close. The direct comparison is the Galaxy Tab S2. Try see if you can find that for £260 anywhere.
