The sapphire should be 10-15% faster and more future proof but obviously costs more. If you've already got or are planning to get a freesync monitor, you won't notice the difference between the 2 other than with ultra big textures where the 4gb card will chug.
Also, the sapphire is a reference card which means that the heatsink and fan is louder and less efficient. But the benefit of a reference card is that the heat is exhausted out of the back of the card instead of inside the case. Good for extra small builds.

would this be a side grade or a downgrade from a 290x?

Not voting hot or cold, but I've written off buying/posting deals from Novatech due to reading this.

Interesting read. I'm surprised Scan was shamed as I have bought a lot from them in the past (although nothing had to be RMA'd). To play devils advocate here I think a lot of the problems with retailers is through ignorance of sale of goods act liability rather than anything ulterior. I remember having this problem with Currys that completely put me off using them.

Scan have behaved disgracefully in the past. I'm surprised to hear bad things abut Novatech, I've found them lovely to deal with.

Maybe missing something there, but he bought the card in 2014 and is returning it now? Doesn't deserve anything from the retailer, ridiculous.
Not needed to RMA anything to Novatech, so can't comment there. Scan however, are shocking and will lie and cheat their way out of most RMAs.

I agree in a way, to offer the sum that they did I would have been ok with

He bought a graphics card with 3 years warranty, it broke before 3 years were up. He paid £160 for it, and they're trying to flip him off with £14, why is that okay?

A 3 year manufacturers warranty. Novatech owe him nothing. If he'd gone direct to MSI I'm sure he would have had a different outcome, but he didn't. Novatech shouldn't have accepted the RMA in the first place, but once they did, they dealt with MSI, and the best he could expect is a partial refund.
Unfortunately the op of that reddit was stupid and the whole post is full of misinformation.

We have different definitions of stupid - I don't think it's the OP's fault that he contacted the retailer to RMA a faulty product, that's what most people would do - if Novatech then accepted the RMA after 2 years, they're it, they should either a) replace like for like, b) replace with similarly performing product, c) refund the full amount.
They can't accept to RMA a product, and then decide they don't want to really go through with the RMA anyway, and just throw loose change at the OP.

You're not including Sale of Goods Act rights!

I accept that was being a bit harsh. But, as part owner of a very small tech retailer that kind of post is horrible. It could have a serious impact on some businesses through no fault of their own. Probably no issue for Novatech, but that's not the point.
In response to your point - the retailer can accept an RMA at anytime. Within the first year a, b, and c apply. In the 2nd year only a and b apply, c then only entitles you to a partial refund based on reasonable use and life expectancy of a product. After that you aren't strictly entitled to anything.
Accepting the RMA just means they authorise you to return the product, nothing more.
£14 wasn't fair but would cover all their legal obligations, they actually offered £42 in the end. That is likely to be near enough the full amount offered by MSI, so very fair.

Okay, thanks for explaining that - in that case I still think Novatech should not have offered to accept the RMA if they were going to give a very small amount of money that can't buy a similar product. What's the point of a warranty if you only get that small amount of money? They should have advised him to deal with MSI directly.

I totally agree, but it's how most warranties work. Also, we don't know that they didn't suggest that initially and maybe the customer pushed the issue, it happens a lot. Much better for them to accept it in that case. It needs to be clear as well, that the partial refund stems from MSI, so there isn't any guarantee that he would have been any better off going direct to them.
Though Novatech £14 offer was either dishonest or they offered it without knowing the amount MSI would reimburse. That part does seem a bit dodgy.
Sometimes it's better to go directly to the manufacturer (eg. EVGA are excellent), sometimes through the retailer if the manufacturer has a poor track record (eg. Powercolor), or the best is through Amazon as they are fantastic at supporting warranties.
