good potential for occasional or station commuter bike. Don't see why this would be just a mens bike either as small goes from 5ft1.

you can get a further 10% off this price if you are a member of British cycling- i believe you can join bc for free if you sign up to a special offer. alternatively just take a BC member with you when you order said bike.

None of these BSA - Bike Shaped Objects are any good and are a massive waste of resources.

I'm not a bike snob but a fairly experienced cyclist and for anyone considering spending this I suggest you do your research, join forums and learn a bit about bikes and then pick up a decent used bike off Gumtree or eBay for a similar price.

Here are some examples Scott Sub 45 disc £56

Scott Sub 20 disc £133

This Apollo will be a pig to ride and has very low end parts. I just think it's a false economy but if you're just riding it to the station, as long as it hasn't got quick release parts there is a very good chance that it'll still be there when you return!

people have different budgets and need bikes for different reasons. I'd be happy leaving this locked up at the station rather than my carbon beauty. I'd rather enjoy my cycling on a higher spec road bike but not everyone needs bikes for same reason.

Its a cheap bike, personally I would spend the extra cash on a better model, remember you only get what you pay for :disappointed:

Exactly what I said then. If you have a 2 mile 30 minute walk to the station this should allow you to half that and there's a high chance it will be there at the end of the day. Personally I wouldn't buy this to ride for pleasure but what do I know?

I haven't mentioned what the frames of my bikes are made of or called myself cycling chum.

Your name is wholly disingenuous with posting this BSA and I can't imagine ANYONE on any bike forums recommending it. Jeez - even the Halford's customers don't rate it highly - and they are a well informed bunch of idiots!

And if someone was considering spending £80 on a bike why on earth would they pay over a quarter of that to join British Cycling at £21 as that would leave them down £13 - LOL

As a fairly experience cyclist I recommend avoiding this doing your research and buying anything better

It's not only low end parts it hasn't been built properly in the factory to start with. The reviews will explain.
I said a while back on here, a friend bought one of these, i read the reviews and they were correct barely any grease anywhere on this bike, i stripped the lot down, put grease on it and rebuilt. This should be done in the factory before they send them out, just shoddy workmanship.
I'd agree just buy something with a good brand second hand.

The bike really is rubbish though, I ended up spending £250 after 2 months for a better bike.

It's genuinely rubbish

To be more in depth, the gears would never work properly, I made 3 trips to Halfords who would adjust it but after 1 week they'd go again.

2 mile commute 5 times a week, 2 miles is an extremely short commute.

The brakes were loud from day one, after 2 months I just bought a btwin and kept this for scraps, not once have I had an issue with the btwin in 7-8 months

Wouldn't a "Bike Shaped Object" be a BSO and not a "BSA"?
KareemSaid to centaurandrew
6 Jan 17 1 #12
LOL yes you're right. Not sure how that helps anyone decide to spend their money but well spotted. Good job I didn't say someone I know brought this POS and it failed on them within 10 miles!

Get over myself? OK then...

I'm just saying, as a cyclist and not using it in my username or anything, then this is going to be a false economy for most people. And it's absolutely ridiculous to think that people buying an £80 are going to spend over a quarter more to join BC.

On the cycling forums I am a member of I am certain that no one would recommend this bike to anyone for any reason....

A lot of the reviews from Halford's customers who have actually parted with money, aren't impressed!

Says it all to me. And as I have said, if you're just using it to cut down a 30 minute walk to the station on your commute, it's very likely to be there at the end of the day.

Might be good for some. Best of luck

Many congratulations on being a member of a cycling forum, do you have to pass exams in order to look at them?

Re the BC thing - as discussed in the post it's free for new members so well worth doing for some.

Enjoy your forums

depends on what kind of cycling you want to do how far, terrain etc. If you were looking to do more than an hour at a time this probably isn't the right deal. There were some really good deals on here recently got planet x, cannondale and giant but all relative to what you what to use it for.

I have owned this bike for a couple of years. It is what it is - a very cheap bike with a lot of limitations, but if you're like me and only a very occasional rider, it isn't that bad for the price.
However, the comments around a total lack of any grease on the bike, as well as loud brakes and a uncomfortable seat are true! If you're doing any more than occasional short rides, it isn't one to go for.

As you lot seem to be knowledgable on the subject, I am after a bike in the £150-£200 area that would suit for a mixture of gravel and tarmac. I wouldn't ever be using it on roads or in the mountains and am looking for comfort primarily. Is there anything you recommend?
Cycling_chum to zeroquai
6 Jan 17 1 #22
Unless you go 2nd hand I don't think £150 - £200 will give you much of an upgrade. I would suggest looking at eBay for a good condition Hybrid or CX bike. I recently purchased a Kona Dr Dew Hybrid on ebay for £80 and I can't fault it. I needed a more upright bike as in last month if pregnancy and this has been ideal.

If you're looking at brand new and from a main retailer like halfords I'd look at throwing a tad more cash at it and either opting for something like the Voodoo or 13 cx bike or if hybrid the Boardmans look ok.

If you look at my previous link you can join British cycling for free as a bronze member if you've not been a member before. This will get you 10% off in Halfords. Also if you use Quidco register your card for instore use and you'll get a further 1-2% cashback on the purchase.

If you're riding on the roads it's well worth having BC membership for the insurance that comes with it. HTH.

I purchased a similar bike from halfords 4 years ago. The gears gave me problems in the first week but the whole mechanism was replaced for free and given a once over and and adjusted, I haven't had a problem since but then it's only lightly used a few miles a few days a week.

Funnily enough my posts have been removed. Seriously, "I know nothing"!!

Best off asking a guy calling himself cyclingchum and posting this. He seems like an expert...

Far be it from me to say that this is a complete waste of time and money....

No one that rides a bike would go anywhere near this. Perhaps good for chumps!!
chrisbass to KareemSaid
6 Jan 17 #24
if you just want something to get you a couple of miles to work and back and you don't care too much about maintenance then i don't see the problem with buying this. If you pedal it it will move forwards and that's all some people want/need.

If you want to get into cycling as a sport or for fitness you might want to spend more but if not then this will probably be fine.
Farhan007
6 Jan 17 #25
It'll get you to and from work if your willing to come constantly take the bike to Halfords due to gears and brakes not working properly.

If you don't care about maintenance, this is the opposite of what you should get lol where are you getting your info from?
chrisbass
6 Jan 17 #26
what i meant was that if you aren't too bothered about silky smooth gear changes, you aren't going to oil the chain and just leave it outside then it is pointless spending more than this on a bike.

it is horses for courses.
basergorkobal
6 Jan 17 1 #27
How much? I could buy a car for less!!!
SFconvert
6 Jan 17 #28
For the money and as a short commuter these are ok but, those chain rings will rust, quickly, especially if used in the winter. Also I can't tell but the bottom bracket is not likely to be of the sealed type, so when this gets a bit wet you can expect problems with the bottom bracket (ie noise and clonking) and you'll need to either service the bearings or replace with a sealed type.
Gripshift type gears are also a proper pain when it is raining or with thick gloves on!

6 Jan 17 #29
Ha ha ha ha. Honestly never a bike. Please if you want a budget bike, don't go for apollo. Just talk to your local bike shop, you can still get a cheap bike for your needs, may have no frills, but you'll get better a bike.

viper668
7 Jan 17 #31
This bike is perfect for my 2.5 mile each travel from home to the train station. I have not had any problems with this so far and have the peace of mind that it has a year's warranty. Better than the £7 a day car parking charge at the train station car park. I don't care if this only lasts a year, it would have paid for itself.
