Just a word of caution on these: I bought one of the 4gb i3's from Amazon when they dropped to £249 just before Christmas. After a very short amount of time it developed the "yellow flashing light of death" (google it). When I entered the service code on the Dell website it showed as out of warranty, and Dell themselves said it had been shipped out by them 15 months previous to me getting it, so it had clearly been sat around in a warehouse somewhere for a long time. I had to send them my proof of purchase to get them to reset the warranty. Had Amazon had any more in stock I would have just sent it back for a replacement, but because these sell out quickly I had to send it to Dell for repair instead, so will be waiting a few weeks to get it back.

I just phoned the Dell warranty support line, was pretty easy to find on their website. They arranged it all from there. I told them I was pulling the HDD before returning it, they were fine with that.

Just happened to me. I cannot even find the link to return it on the website though, could you link me please?

What happens to my (ahem) personal files on it? I have also booted it to windows 10 so will i lose my licence?

Well one of the i5s came in stock and I debated it for to long until it was gone and back to 1-2 month wait. Then I checked again later and it was back so I went for it

Can play other games but I'd probably be on CS:GO most of the time. Seems like a cheap option rather than building a new PC with similar spec and price?

Lol it is funny everyone saying CS:GO.

One of those budget towers that pop up on here with a low power graphics card whacked in then is cheaper and quite a bit faster for games. But then this is a small box which has a nice looking logo on it. Which can tempt people.

Unless there's a PC exclusive title that you can't live without, then that's the only reason I can think of to buy one of these over a PS4 Pro. The fact that a game may or may not work properly when you've forked out £300+ is just daft.
cantonbean to MrFlux001
17 Jan 17 #45
I didn't know you could do full productivity on a PS4 Pro. I can game in Windows on this and do office related tasks and can also use Linux to learn Bash Shell and don't care if mucks up as this isn't my main PC. Can you do that on a PS4 Pro? I think people need to bear in mind that although the GPU in this isn't the best there aren't many small form factor PCs with even this level of GPU and certainly not at this price. The i3 isn't the best but anything too tasking for that you can probably combine with the GPU. This is a nice small PC that you can upgrade everything bar the GPU and the i3 1TB 7200rpm model with 8GB is a pretty decent PC. No it doesn't match my i7 desktop but it is smaller then a PS4.

Keep an eye on the Dell outlet for scratch and dent returns (stock refreshes at 14:45 and 19:45) of the R2 version. Not too much more and the R2 has the Graphics amplifier port so you can effectively upgrade the graphics later (Just don't get one with an AMD card or you can't use the port)

The 860m although now completely destroyed by the new 10xx series gpus is still a decent card and about the same spec as an xbox one. It will play any game released but you will have to turn down some settings to get something similar to a xb1 (e.g. play at 900p, turn off aa etc etc) it is hardly the same as integrated intel graphics giving double the benchmarks of the intel iris 550 for example see here intel iris 550 and here 860m

The following is not the greatest or most technical comparison but for those who just want real world comparisons i think it's helpful.

I bought a 4130T (same CPU as this steam machine) and put it in a little HTPC build i was pairing with a Rx 460, i watch twitch a lot on my sony 4k TV, the resolution on my PC was set 1080P, playing source quality streams resulted in significant FPS drops, my main PC has an I5 4570s, not even close to being the most powerful but it managed the same task with no slow down.

To be fair the 4130T did play source twitch streams on my 21 inch monitor without issues so i can only assume that there is some processing going on on my TV but, my point is that this CPU is pretty weak, know what your buying even if your only gonna use this as a PC.

I got an i3 around X mas, sold the HDD and RAM and Controller for about £70 wacked in a SSD and 8GB RAM and bought a cheap windows key all for about £100 and I think it's absolutely brilliant. Played about 5 games nothing brand new but everything seems really smooth. I mainly play CS:GO and it's super smooth.

I think the benefit of these PCs is that there is such a large choice of games available so even if the latest games work don't there are 1000s of games available that are fantastic and have a great online community and can often cost just a few quid + you have a PC.

Highly recommended
DannyBoy99
17 Jan 17 #32
That would be lovely, but I suspect it'll just be a mobo or CMOS battery replacement as that seems to have been the fix for most people. Dell are obviously well aware of the issue as you only have to mention it on a support forum and their agents instruct you to send it in for repair.

Im looking to replace my Pi's (Pi3 OSMC and Pi2 Sonaar etc) with an AIO and looking at something like this or the ASUS Vivo.

Ive had my fun with Android boxes and Pis last few years and want to go back to a dedicated PC for a HTPC.

Is it worth the extra £100ish to get this with a i5 and GPU or stick to a £150 Asus with a Celeron.

Mainly a console gamer but the thought of doing a bit of gaming is quite enticing, would love to play through Half Life and some other classics again and maybe some of my HUKDeal filled Steam library...

I have been out the game for a while and have no idea about which chips do what these days or lifespan of them.

17 Jan 17 #29
These were really designed to be used in conjunction with a desktop via streaming rather than a direct replacement. I know steam link does this for a lot less but this was out way before and you can play many older good titles without powering up the rig.
Sharpharp
17 Jan 17 #26
naturally the price will drop, these are old tech, Alienware means nothing once the CPU is yesteryear, also i3... should be around £175 tops not the £300 mark

I have the i3 1tb version and I love it! sure its not the most up to date machine but for me to play insurgency, rust and euro truck simulator its great! however I bought a cheap keyboard and mouse as the steam controller is horrendous!
grphillips
17 Jan 17 #23
These are a fairly niche product in contrast to desktop PCs, so a direct cost to performance comparison isn't entirely appropriate. This is for people who are happy to sacrifice performance for the benefits of space saving and/or portability (and want to game on a PC rather than console). For those happy to take that hit, this is a fairly good option.
KirstyB87
17 Jan 17 #20
Don't 'Steam machines' suffer from two big issues? Namely a lack of games relative to Windows-based Steam and also relatively poor GPU driver support from AMD and Nvidia?
ZiggySTW to KirstyB87
17 Jan 17 #22
You CAN install windows on it, and it's a normal (dated) pc =), but for this price it's really good.
I'll wait for it to be £150ish
geebeegooner
17 Jan 17 #21
Agree console and pc can't be really compared.
I don't really deal with amd either always stuck with nvidia due to all problems I see people moaning about in game forums about driver issues and nvidia being a git in the pc market..Tbf bang for buck that pro is pretty amazing, I got one for £280 and when games start getting proper support its a decent option.
I was blown away with the performance on last of us and the uncharted collection.

Was waiting for these prices to drop again to these levels but instead picked up a like new second hand Alienware Alpha i5 in the meantime and I'm very happy with it. For the form factor and price it's a great htpc and occasional gaming machine. I've picked up an Xbox wireless adaptor for it and am happily playing through half life 2 again along with a few FPS I've missed over the last few years.

longback2 to Stevie Badman

very different, the shield plays android games locally using its own power, or can stream PC games from a gaming PC in your house, or you can buy/rent games from 'geforce now' service and stream from their machines.

Can only speak from experience but I've actually found that I can play GTA 5 on medium settings on 1440p ok! The HDD is also 7200 rpm so it's not too bad. Guess you have to bear in mind that you're getting a full PC with a dedicated GPU for the price of the newest cards alone. I'm running a dual boot of CentOS and Windows 7 on it. Great little machine for testing!

16 Jan 17 #2
Good price and I'm tempted, what sort of purposes are people using this for since it only has an 860m (correct me if I'm wrong) and that is a bit dated.
Scottc123 to towan
17 Jan 17 #8
Indeed, the GPU has about the same performance as on-board Iris 550 graphics found in Skylake (5th gen) i5 and i7 CPU. Will probably run games like BioShock Infinite OK, but otherwise, yes, weak.
basergorkobal to towan

It's an overpriced HTPC. If you like vintage gaming then a gaming machine also.
kye1987
17 Jan 17 #11
For the price the 960m isn't so bad. My brother has 1 in his hp omen and plays most new games on medium/high dependant on game. Does the job. Yeah building your own 1060 pc would be faster but would cost a lot more too
Johnmcl7
17 Jan 17 1 #10
I think that's generous for a PS4 pro, its specs put it around an RX470 or an RX480 if being generous (RX480 is similar to a GTX 970) although directly comparing PC to console hardware is rarely possible because both use their hardware in quite different ways. Also and more fundamentally no spec of PC will play a PS4 exclusive.

The GPU in the AW machine hasn't changed as far as I'm aware, it's an older Nvidia 860m or something similar which is a weaker card compared to the PS4 pro and an older card now which isn't upgradeable. I'm not convinced these machines are a great buy for that reason unless they're not going to be used for gaming.

What are these like in comparison to a ps4 pro? Can you still use steam the same way as a PC? Chat, game with people., edit settings for graphics like a PC etc?
geebeegooner to Crazygooner1
16 Jan 17 1 #4
Read that the ps4 pro is somewhat between a gtx 970 and 980 which are still to this day very good cards in the pc world.
Can't comment on mobile gpu though as my knowledge is limited but I'd take a guess and say not in the ball park.
vulcanproject to Crazygooner1
17 Jan 17 2 #7
PS4 Pro annihilates these. They have a couple generation old mobile GPU in them that wasn't high end when it was new. PS4 Pro's GPU is akin to a £175 RX 470, multiple times more powerful.

This steam machine will have it's clock thoroughly cleaned by a £100 GTX1050 in a desktop machine. If you put windows on it, then it functions as a gaming PC. But a pish one.
bisoner to Crazygooner1
17 Jan 17 1 #9
PC gaming is more flexible but you will probably need a Windows 10 license and an SSD for the OS for one of these boxes. As a Windows machine it's will offer all the usual benefits over console gaming. It will push the total cost up to around £350 depending on size of ssd.

The Pro will outperform this graphically.
Yes to Steam but will work best under Windows 10.
Yes to adjusting graphics options.
Chat not a problem with the right headset /mic.
