No mate. You can only use Alexa, Amazon or Echo :smirk: 'Big Brother' would be kind of cool, though.

Doesn't this defeat the object of a voice controlled device? If I wanted to use a remote to turn up the volume or skip songs then I wouldn't need Alexa in the first place

Needs expiring. Still showing up when searching for "Amazon Echo".

For the Dot in our living room we've adopted the 'tin foil hat' approach and turned the microphone off. The voice remote works with the mic off so, theoretically, it's not continually listening out for its wake word and we just use the remote. I suppose that approach will also reduce the numerous false positive activations that happen during the day when listening to radio etc.
Thanks OP.

As an aside alexa has a new wake word, "Computer" , been doing Star Trek stuff all afternoon

I will be buying 1 echo dot. I don't have any smart lights or heating. I onto listen to loud music so is the remote any good to me?

Possibly - the echo sometimes struggles to hear you if you have loud music or the speaker is next to the dot. TBH I would try without remote and buy one later if you decide you need it.

Code not working for me.
So I went and checked the 8 pages of accessories and this is not in the listed items that the code can be used on.
Perhaps it is due to not being back in stock until Feb 3rd and the offer is only valid upto Jan 31st?
A bit gutted as a won an Echo in the Amazon Locker Christmas competition and has a very nice addition to the home so a remote to go with it would have been nice for £15.99

"A bit gutted"?? You got the Echo for free and that's your reaction to not getting a few quid off an already reasonably priced accessory? A little perspective surely.

sorry more of a thought than a question, lots of ppl saying the 20newyear code isnt working, i could only use it on the account i use for Alexa, could the discount code be connected to an alexa or other amazon account associated with whichever accessory? (apparently it is a question, i tried to end with a full stop but it just looked so wrong)

thanks for the tweezers top tip, just cancelled the order i placed an hour ago then immediately reordered with free p&p, i could only use the "20NEWYEAR' code on the amazon account i use for Alexa, it wouldn't work on my other accounts, could it be tied to Alexa accounts?

We've one echo and four dots, I've a remote just for the one in the bedroom, so I can control it at a whisper, it's also easier to control volume. As someone else alluded too, if you've only one echo/dot, you can use the remote to control home automation (nest/hive/hue/harmony for example) from another room or floor.

but then where does the music / sound come from ? the remote? must sound awful.
have 5 echo dots... can't seriously see the point of a remote for it.

For all us non-Prime users - you don't actually need to add on £4.01 of stuff to get free delivery, just add on one of these for 17p and you will get the option of free delivery. It seems to qualify because of the pre-discounted price.

It can't talk to an actual echo/dot but you can talk to Alexa through the remote and get responses on the tv.
