Bit of a complicated mix here. The original MARANTZ company was established in the USA by Saul Marantz and was a well respected American Hi-Fi brand. My first proper Hi-Fi amplifier was bought in the 1960s, a large heavy solid unit by MARANTZ and made in Japan. Original Marantz equipment can often be seen in old American films and TV series. I known the unit you mention, at that time the Marantz brand outside of USA had been licensed by PHILIPS as an alternative premium branding to their products. They did what was known as "badge engineering" also using the GRUNDIG brand and long before that the PYE brand on various audio and video products. The original large Philips organization has been trimmed over the years and brands and product ranges such as TV sold off. It is however a completely separate source, my ID is not linked, simply a coincidence my ID and my owning an original Marantz product.

You are right that AKAI PRO is a completely different company. Sometimes well known brands are licensed to different companies for different products.

In the 1970s and 1980s AKAI used to be one of the best known brands in quality reel-to-reel tape recorders, cassette recorders and other Hi-Fi audio and video equipment. Akai and Rotel were Japanese brands imported by The Rank Organization and marketed alongside the brands Leak and Wharfedale which they owned. I worked at Rank H.Q. in London, the group had various divisions including making many famous films over decades and owning the Odeon cinema network. Eventually the group was broken up and the companies and brands sold to various others. AKAI as a manufacturer ceased operations and the BRAND, like many other famous names has been used since on budget products from China.

AKAI professional stuff, like studio mixers, vocoders etc are still well respected. Guessing totally different company to the B&M / Range 'economy' items you see on the high street.

Used to be a quality brand in the 80's bit like Bush was in the 70's. Shame to see these brands lose their sheen.
