As always, these NAS drives are great value if you get rid of a couple of cr*ppy services which run on the NAS and really hurt performance. Google "optimise wd my cloud" for details on how to do this.

i bought mine for £59 more than a year ago from the same source. No problems but the software isn't the friendliest. £77 is too much.

Ive searched too and cannot find any warranty details. A lot of manufacturers offer 12m even on refurbished products these days, but nothing obvious on the WD site

But be careful, as doing so may invalidate your warranty.

This is what I use mine for. I have all of my media on the NAS and I stream the movies/photos to 3 Kodi boxes (2 Raspbery Pi2's and one Beelink) connected to TVs around the house. Works like a charm.
Word of warning - mine died after 5 months but was refused service as it took over a month for their 'technician' to decide that it needed a repair. He had me do all sorts of checks and tests over the phone that I had to explain wouldn't work as it was just dead. He tried to remote in on a number of occasions despite me telling him there is absolutely no power flowing round the unit - he asked to do this on 3 separate days because 'you might be having network issues'. I'm clued in, have a gigabit network in our house that's managed by me. The overall customer service is dreadful and it's an Irish number you have to call to get an RMA which, unless anyone has found a freephone number, costs money to call! Absolutely pathetic service and makes me never want to touch these again however cheap they are.

If you reported it after 5 months then it doesn't matter how long it takes a technician to assess it, the fault was still reported within the warranty period. If that the case, you should fight this.
I have had one WD drive die on me in 8 years, it was 1 month inside the 2 year warranty period and WD arranged for collection and delivery of a new drive for me without issue. All done online too.
Can't complain about WD at all, other than that 1 drive all their products (internal drives, external drives, passport drives, WDTVs etc) have been great for me. Hopefully this gives a bit of a positive perspective and help off set any negative reviews too!

I've mentioned this on a few threads in the past.......I've had a total of eleven recertified drives from WD (9x 2tb Ultras and 2x 4Tb MyBooks), and I've not had a problem with any of them. It would be interesting to find out what WDs definition of recertified is, as the only difference I've seen is that I've not ended up throwing away a load of unwanted retail packaging. Excellent value and reliable in my opinion,
12TB for £369.99, which is particularly good as the 8TB is only £30 less.

the 12tb is in stock as of writing.. did not bite as it's fully populated with 4 x 3tb HDDs. this will not do for me as it arranges it in a raid 5 type or equivalent set and you can only replace the same drive back in there if a drive is faulty.
something with 2x 6 or 8 TB is best in my particular use case.

Is it worth paying the extra and buying brand new from Amazon for the additional 18 months warranty?
polarbaba to dawsonz

depends on how much extra... these prices are very very attractive comparable to bare drives alone!

£110 from WD recertified and £150 from amazon (4TB).

how much risk are you willing to take on for that discount for the amount of total savings incurred. bearing in mind that which ever drive fails the data itself was lost. which I imagine is more valuable to you.
my strategy is to have two backups.. that way if there is a failure.. I won't be crying too much.. only for the inconvenience rather than the loss of data.

also .. please please do not neglect a backup solution... many have learnt this the hard way.
in my case I have a family picture albums all digital so they are very valuable to me.
