If you are happy with it then Go You!!! I prefer automatic framerate switching, fractional frame rates, audio passthrough, deinterlacing other than bicubic or nearest neighbour, and the countless other features android kodi either doesn't offer or that don't work very well, along with the speed and stability the linux version of kodi offers. My main s905x box running Libreelec kodi can see uptimes of over a month with no problems, with <150mb of RAM used with a fanart heavy skin at idle, android can barely manage a day or two before needing to be rebooted and uses the best part of 1gb of RAM just to sit idle.
I've run kodi on various boxes, ranging from the Amlogic 8726MX SoC that kicked the TV Box all off - through s802, s805, s812 upto current s905 & s905x SoCs. Also experience with Allwinner A33 & H3 SoCs, Broadcom BCM2835/7 (rasp pi 2/3) on single board computers, and various Snapdragon and Mediatek implementations on tablets/phones. Also used the Intel X86/64 version in various linux distros (including Libreelec) and under windows. Way before all that I started running it on the first xbox console when it was known as XBMP/XBMC - at which time I contributed code to the project. In every case the Linux (and Windows) version is vastly superior to android.
Don't get me wrong, it's amazing what the team have achieved on android, especially when the SoC manufacturers make life difficult and workarounds have to be found (amcodec notable amongst them, which has finally been deprecated as of Kodi 17), but that is in spite of the platform, not because of it.
It's now so easy to boot linux from SD card on many devices that it isn't even an issue - boot from SD and enjoy all the advantages of Libreelec then reboot into android if you need to use an android app - the best of all worlds.

go on YouTube and check "gen tec wizard" there a video of his showing you all the sky kodi builds he does, the best one is the sky Q build. there's all a tutorial on how to install it on kodi as well. :sunglasses:

i bought one of these the other weeks, seems an ok box but my was faulty and flicker screen was really bad , i returned mine and paid a bit more for a Bqeel X8T Max. both boxes are good but i am glad mine was faulty as the newer one is much better. and the pre installed kodi addons seem much better on this.
but for £26.99 for this one i don't think you can go wrong unless you get a duff one like i did.

Did you check the resolution it was outputting at? Mine was set to 4k so the screen did have a bit of flicker and was quite jagged. When changed to 1080p it was fine.

Got mine a few days ago. Works well, after I changed screen resolution down to 1080p from 4k.
Kodi came already loaded and working fine so I didn't bother to find other add ons. I'll probably get one of those wireless keyboards in time. The supplied remote is OK.

The Ampak AP6212 wifi module (6212A in boxes manufactured after ~nov 2016) is notoriously bad, compounded by the fact that they decided to mount the antenna on the bottom of the box. Turning it upside down increases my throughput from the ~5mbit that it would normally receive to around 25mbit.
It's a decent box, but the wifi definitely isn't its strong point.

Thanks tarantulas, unfortunately I need a box with a decent wifi reception, I watched a review of the Mini M8S II and the figures were pretty shocking when not using etherent.
I'll take a look at the others you mentioned too.

Without a doubt I'd recommend an android box over the amazon fire. The fire runs on a Mediatek 8127D which isn't the fastest SoC in the world, which is further crippled by amazon's incredibly bloated FireoS.
For most people it is worth buying an android box, but rather than using android they would have a much better experience running kodi under libreelec. It's incredibly simple to do, write an SD card on your computer and boot the box to the recovery menu with it in - from then on it will boot from SD card if it is inserted, internal storage (android) if not. If you have a profile and library all setup in android you can easily copy your /userdata/ folder over to the sd card and carry on as you were but with all the advantages of the much more mature and stable linux version of kodi.

I have a friend who wanted to get a fire stick the other day but i told him maybe it was best for him to get an android box, as they are similar money (£30-£50) what would you recommend he gets?
For that kind of money, and for the common user, like me and most people (who dont really need all the stuff you mention, is it still not worth buying an android box and installing kodi on it, or would you still advise against it?
I know it slows and freezes sometimes but for a free media centre, streaming latest movies and sports, it's something that many of us just accept. I always thought it was just how kodi was....

I'm currently using Mini M8S II (s905x) and Beelink Mini MX (s905) as my primary boxes. Both have wifi (mini mx is dual band) but it's pretty weak like most budget chinese boxes.
If you intend to remain on android then the Xiaomi Mi BOX (s905x) is definitely the best choice - a little more expensive than most boxes but it comes with AC wifi which is fast enough to stream high bitrate 4k files, uses Android TV (rather than tablet/phone version most boxes come with), has HD netflix certification and fractional framerates are supported (so 23.976fps movies won't look jerky, which they do on most boxes running android version of kodi).
If you plan on using libreelec then pretty much any s905 box and virtually all s905x will work fine - a few s905x models have wifi/bluetooth modules that aren't yet supported or no available drivers but they are generally added as soon as they become available. Search gearbest or amazon for s905 and you'll get plenty to choose from. I'd recommend getting a model with 2GB of RAM, especially if you intend to use android.

Not sure what you're running android on but ive been using kodi on android devices for years and it works brilliantly
I have it running on my phone, my sony bravia (android tv) and my hudl 2 and it works great on all of them....

I'm quite impressed by Kodi (on Windows) it decodes more file types than anything else, including all the variations of KMV and old FLV that nothing else will touch (I have some all singing and dancing Smart Hub Samsung TVs) some Western Digital Boxes and Serviio (and Kodi does a lot more besides :wink: ) and apparently the Plex interface runs on Kodi, if you have a licence for it (I think)

I use a Beelink Mini MXIII (my niece has one too) and my younger niece has a Nexbox A95X - of course you get wonky streams at times but I find it easy to use, doesn't hang at all, assume it's the same on more expensive devices. Use mine more than my Humax set top box!
I like having the ability to use Android apps (have Soundcloud, Spotify, Skype - switched off most of the time).
Bung Wookie build on it and you have tons to watch. Kodi 17 doesn't work properly with this build yet - can't speak of others.

Any real-word experience of these running KODI? Is it a bit hot & miss? All I want is something to play from my Plex PC (currebtly use KODI with Plexbmc add-in on a W10 PC) but quite a few of the Amazon reviews mention KODI being a bit rubbish.

Kodi on android is a mess. The team try, but it's a pretty terrible platform to build a media player on. But boxes with an Amlogic SOC such as this can run libreelec - either booting from SD card or alternately by installing to internal eMMC and completely replacing android. This transforms them into pretty amazing media centres that can also run usenet or torrent clients, web servers, even use them as a NAS in a pinch. Libreelec for these boxes can be downloaded from LibreELEC › COMMUNITY › Amlogic
Netflix will be 480p, as these don't have the widevine certification required for higher.

I find KODI a bit wonky, even on an Nvidia Shield. I've yet to try 17 / Krypton so perhaps things have improved?
Plex runs extremely well on the Shield, not had any issues.

pretty sure netflix 4k doesn't work on these due to copy protection hand shakes etc. not even sure it does 1080p? can anyone confirm what netflix is like on these android boxes? 5.1 surround sound? chromecast and fire stick do.
