Hi guys

Samsung are offering 2 years interest free credit on orders over £249. The credit is offered by PayPal credit

It is also 24 equal payments so no balloon payment at the end or have to remember to pay off or incur penalties etc

The credit is subject to status but apparently PayPal credit can still ge obtained with credit issues but will depend on individual circumstances of course

I think it's pretty good if you want to grab some Samsung gear in the Sales and spread the cost very easily over 24 months without too much hassle

Also offering Free next day delivery on orders placed before 7pm

If you're buying direct from Samsung then check their prices vs other retailers, you might be getting interest free credit but you might be paying way more than if buying from Amazon etc - I haven't checked but usually manufacturers own prices are much higher than retailers.

Also consider section 75 consumer protection that you get with a credit card and I don't think you get with PayPal.

Exactly. On the example you gave it would probably be cheaper to buy from Brighthouse than it would to utilise PayPal's interest free option :P If my maths is correct buying from Samsung rather than Argos would be comparable to buying it on a credit card with 39% APR over 2 years.

Any admin setup fee with this?
dougrobbins78 to malachi
2 Jan 17 1 #3
Nope. The only fees are for missed payments or requesting paper statements

1. Are there any fees I should be aware of?
Late Payments
If you’re late with a payment, PayPal may charge you a late payment fee of £12.

Returned Payments
You may be charged a return payment fee of £12 if you have insufficient funds to cover the payment.

Statements (Paper Copy)
We also charge a fee of £5 if you request that we send you a printed copy of a previous statement. All statements are available to download or view online within the PayPal Credit section of your PayPal account.

For more information on how these fees apply, please refer to the Outline of Credit, the Standard European Consumer Credit Information document or the Credit Agreement.

2. Is there an annual fee?
No. There is no annual fee for a PayPal Credit account.

Good deal but shame the S7 edge, for example, is still over priced at £599. If it was around £400 then I would bite.
They claim an RRP of £639 too, not sure who recommended that to them!
dougrobbins78 to loofer
2 Jan 17 1 #6
Brilliant  yeah it's a shame the products aren't more competitively priced. Some brands try to match the open market web price on their official sites to a certain extent but not Samsung it appears

Argos are randomly selling it for the inflated RRP but it can be got for £400ish on some sites

With so many 0% purchase credit card deals that gives you access to more retailers, not sure why anybody would choose this offer direct via Samsung. If they can't compete on price then maybe an increased warranty period.

Well said. Supposedly PayPal's requirements are lower than other interest free credit providers

An ex-colleague of mine had been refused credit cards but was accepted for PayPal credit. I recall it wasn't interest free and only £200 credit but better than nothing if you need it

Ok not the same deal but seen as though it's being discussed, it appears PayPal credit have an ongoing offer (or feature) whereby for any purchase you make over £150, you get 4 months interest free to pay it off. You can use it multiple times, providing the transaction is over £150 each time.

Therefore, with it dealing in credit I would imagine you're covered by section 75 , so if you were going to buy, say, a TV anyway from Currys/AO/AN Other on credit card to pay off at next statement then you've got an option here that gives you 4 months interest free

Just handy info that I was t aware off until I looked at this

Yep, I have the PayPal credit offer, 0% for 4 months, credit limit is £2k I believe (for me anyway). Quite useful to have, took all of a minute to sign up.

The 0% credit cards are a waste of time nowadays. Myself and quite a few others on here signed up for the AA one a while ago. Was provisionally accepted, but they wanted me to post doctor (as if the NHS has spare appointments for certifying copies!) certified copies of my driving license, utility bills, bank statements and even a payslip or my employment contract. Told them to **** off, and remove the search from my file (which they actually did surprisingly) - we didn't need that many documents when we took out our damn mortgage!

It still happens across 3 parties...people save up with a bank, the bank lends the money to somebody who wants to borrow it (in the hope of making money). That profit helps keep your cost of saving money down to nil.

A Galaxy is something that the average person is more likely to be able to afford for cash than, say, a house. Where interest rates are positive, and 0% interest is available, and the goods are available for a competitive price, surely the logical option is always to purchase on credit? I can then profit from the transaction. (See: Stoozing)

As people have said the items are fairly steeply priced in the first place. The 49" TV UE49KU6400 is £699 via dougrobbins78 link in post 28. Its currently £549 in John Lewis.

http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue49ku6400u-led-4k-ultra-hd-smart-tv-49-with-freeview-hd-freesat-hd-and-built-in-wi-fi/p2729551?navAction=jump&_requestid=4661255

and was £499 at Richer Sounds until a few days ago...(currently only showing as clearance)

The difference being the cost of the credit I suppose...

I haven't had personal experience of dealing with "Paypal Credit" only Paypal when linked to Ebay purchases. 99% of the time things work as they should. But the 1% - where human intervention has been required they've been a nightmare to deal with. That would concern me personally if I was entering a long term credit agreement with them.

Just speaking from experience....maybe other peoples are more positive.

Thanks to the OP for posting the deal though as it might help someone.

I can't find a single television on that website. If you filter the 'sale' page for TV & AV, all you get are sound bars. Searching for televisions is an abysmal process and each time I try to tick the box to the left to limit the search to "television" the page just refreshes and the filter is not applied.

I have Paypal credit and no issues with a similar 12 month deal. just beware that if you purchase something else for say 100 pounds and want to pay it off the 100 will come off your interest free balance and you continue to pay interest on the 100.
bma1445
3 Jan 17 #47
I've found the opposite - I have a direct debit setup for the minimum and pay off other stuff when it's due. Payments always seem to go to the oldest payment (but I've never let it run past the interest-free bit, never needed to). Looking on palpal's site, it says they'll apply payments in the following order:

Excess Payments:
Promotions expiring on current due date (oldest balance first)
Promotions expiring on following due date (oldest balance first)
Interest/fees
Standard balance
Remaining promotions in expiring order
Balances with a lower than standard APR (e.g. "90 Day Grace" and "Balance Prior To") in order of low to high APR, or in case of multiples with same APR in order of low to high balance
Easy Payments
Current activity
Amounts in dispute
loofer
3 Jan 17 1 #48
so just so that I understand this correctly, if you buy something for £200 thus qualifying for 4 months interest free with intention to pay £50 each month (which is likely to be more than the minimum payment amount)... and then sunsequently also purchase something for £100 with the intention to pay it off immediately upon receiving first statement, so no interest is accrued.

Your first payment made is £150 but they only apply that against the promotional purchase which was £200 (making the outstanding balance on that £50) but the 2nd purchase of £100 is still outstanding and accrues interest in 2nd statement?

have I got that right? Sorry for hijacking thread.

Back in the 1800's consumers and merchants exchanged goods using the concept of credit; using credit coins and charge plates as currency. Someone invented plastic, later in the 1950's someone wanted some food without having to hand over money and invented the Diners card, then an American wanted to buy things very quickly without using cash so invented American Express. Unfortunately 55 years later bankers got greedy and gave lots of money to people who could never repay the debt, luckily some of those bankers jumped out of tall buildings as they were so upset with what they'd done to society. Now Samsung want to help consumers out by allowing you to have shiney new products even though you can't afford them, but don't worry Samsung aren't losing out on this deal as they helpfully add about 20% to their prices to cover the free credit.

So that's it, in a nutshell. Hope that helps.

4 Jan 17 2 #51
Any purchase over £150 with PayPal Credit offers 4 months 0% interest free, if that's of any help to those who can afford to pay it back quicker. So a £250 Samsung purchase using PayPal Credit will mean you have 4 months to pay it back at £65 a month and not feel the sting. Just a shame retailers like Amazon don't accept PayPal. But no reason you couldn't get one off eBay through an official retailer's store.

Hope that helps some.

So the model of mobile phone contracts is wrong as well then? The payments are to pay for the handset more than the service they provide!

0% interest purchases are just saving in reverse, I don't see why people get so bent out of shape about them and credit in general? As long as it is used responsibly and people borrow within their means then there is no issue. Just because you dogmatically follow a rigid mindset of 'save then buy' doesn't mean you're correct.

Voted hot, 2 years at 0% is a good deal but people should be wary to check prices and compare to interest free credit card deals if they have to buy something.

I was interested in this as a way of doing a mobile phone contract 'myself' as it were, but actually there doesn't seem much point.

The S7 Edge using Paypal and Samsung is 24.96 a month over 24 months
A Three sim with unlimited everything (12 month contract) is £32 a month

That is £1,367.04 over the course of the 'contract'.

The same deal with Three which includes the phone is £55 a month + £49.99 up front - that's £1,369 over the course of the contract, so very little in it using that example.

Will have to find a cleverer way of getting my unlimited data and nice phone without breaking the bank.

What's all this s*** about not spending what you can't afford? Even if I can afford to spend this money up front, I'd rather get it on 0% credit and leave the money in the bank to cover it - that way, I get interest (Pfff, for what it's worth) on that AND I get an item I can afford.

But regardless of that, if you can afford the monthly payments, they you can afford them item - doesn't matter if it's on credit or not.
super_leeds_86

Deals offering credit for things like low value technology/game consoles/cheap tablets always brings out a discussion over what to buy using finance. It is swings and roundabouts and each family/individual has to decide what suits them. Is buying a £30k car on a PCP or a £3k holiday on a credit card any better or worse than a £250 tablet on 0% from Samsung?!

For me it's the liability of the debt, the risk in buying low value goods is by the nature of the item low risk, a £30k Car PCP matters as you might end up lumbered with the car if someone crashes in to you, you lower that liability by getting Gap insurance. For items other than houses then one off cost or monthly payment really doesn't matter, as long as your monthly wages keep rolling in.

Edit:
Out of curiosity would the half rule apply to this?

The 'half rule' The 'half-rule' is part of the Consumer Credit Act, 1995 and gives you the right to end a hire purchase agreement at any time. Your documentation (the agreement) from the finance company must show the figure for half the hire purchase price of the item.

It depends when you bought the £100 item.

Your due dates will be the end of the current month, and the end of the next month. If any of your 0% offers expire by either of these dates, the payment will go towards them (points 1 and 2) before the non-promotional item (standard balance).

Say you bought the £100 item 2 weeks after buying your interest free item and make a payment at the end of that month - that payment will go against your standard balance (the £100 item), not the interest free item (which would come under "remaining promotions", since it doesn't expire in the next 2 due dates).

Ultimately, it should always work out in your favour - the system will pay off interest free items before they start accruing interest, and any interest-charging balances will be paid before non-expiring promotions.

I buy most expensive household things (£250+) on 0% with a maximum budget of £2 a day/£60 a calender months on payments due under 0%, approx 10% of my annual income a year as a maximum 0% outgoing, its called being proactive that if circumstances change for the worse £15 a week should be reasonable given my savings outweigh my post 'roof above my head' annual income of £6500.

In my case the things 1) I need, and 2) treat (ie. a mobile phone that is cheaper sim only & 2 years 0%) rely on 0% - it serves its purpose when you serve yourself well.

I can't see any offers? Was thinking of maybe upgrading my tv but nothing is showing up. Can you still get the credit if you go to their main online shop?

What a useless "store" - I just spent the better part of an hour searching for a monitor and of the 20+ that are listed, 2 are in stock!

Its "up to 24 months" I had my eye on a Samsung Gear S3 Classic watch, so went for this deal as same price everywhere, the site only gave 4 months, still happy with it though

Paying by Paypal credit seems to keep failing. Sales support know about it, but don't know when it will be fixed, and have no workaround either! So not that great an offer if it doesn't work!

whats the difference, you still have to pay for it either way.

Because you can get the items cheaper from other stores, at the very least other places that offer up to 10% cashback.

In this example yes the products are 10% more expensive so if someone can shop around they should .

But in answer to your comment about the principle generally of using credit rather than saving up and buying something outright . When it comes to luxury items that someone does not need then this is fair comment . Although if I know for example on my income I can save £50 a month and buy the £500 phone/laptop/coat/bag/shoes etc etc in 10 months why not buy it on a 10 mont interest free card today and pay it off over 10 months ?

There are also circumstances when something essential breaks today and waiting 6 months to save up for it is not going to be appropriate . Say my washing machine breaks today . I might not have £300 lying around to replace it with an equal model . I know that I could afford a monthly repayment however of £50 so could afford to buy it on interest free credit and repay it over 6 months . Now it would be nice if everyone had a nice pot of cash sitting around for life's emergencies (as it happens I do ) but i recognise that not everyone has this luxury .

Personally I see no issue with credit as a concept . As long as it is used responsibly . For example I have around £7k of credit available to me spread over 2 different credit cards . Would I go out and max that out tomorrow . Hell no because I know I could not afford to repay it before the interest starts accruing and I would probably end up paying back the £7k over several years . However I know that if I really wanted to I could go and spend £1k on something non essential and repay it during the interest free period . with the added bonus of increased protection that comes with buying something on a card .

At the moment my main reason for making purchases by credit card is in order to get those green ticks as in about 2 years time I am going to be looking at being a first time buyer and obviously a record of responsible credit usage is essential for that . So if I am going to be buying a new phone or tablet or laptop or trainers or any other stuff why not get the consumer protection and my green ticks thrown in .

You could argue all day about the whys and hows of people using credit irresponsibly , and i do think that lack of education and encouragement to live beyond ones means using credit is a problem but ultimately you do have to take control of your own destiny at some point .

Maybe I've been brought up a different way.
I would not like to be in a situation that if I lost my job, I would have a load of unnecessary monthly payments for the latest phones and tablets I could no longer afford. Yes, the payments would get referred, but charges and interest would be added.

I guess it is the head in the sand approach that a lot of people take these days.

I was brought up by parents who used to save then buy . but that was mainly because that was the generation they grew up in when peoples saved money in coffee jars and we did not have available access to personal credit (save for mortgages ) .

However times change . I agree that you would be daft to go mad with it but the key is being responsible and setting yourself a budget over a sensible period of time . I would not go out and buy a new laptop , phone and tablet all in one go . I still would buy one after the other when the last one has been paid off .

As others have said there are also opportunities to make money using free credit by sticking the money you would have just spent on the item in as high an interest savings account you can find .
