Googles official partner for their Android TV OS box (follow up to the nexus player) Brilliant box Imagine a Nvidia Shield box without out all the parts many users did not need....lightning quick.... Comes with a UK plug
This is not one of those android boxes that you need a air mouse... this is Android TV....specifically built for TV's
TCB tracked at £4.56 so that makes it £52!
I paid £80 for this pre xmas, so more fool me
So what actually is the difference I hear you shout, between an Android box and a Android TV box?
This should help, shamelessly copied from reddit
Many people are confused and its unfortunate that these android "tv" boxes existed before Google decided to rebrand "Google TV" to "Android TV"
Here is Android TV
Biggest difference to me is the UI. Leanback UI is sexy and appropriate for the big screen. App shortcuts are nice big tiles with proper sized font. UI navigation is conducive to using a simple d-pad remote.
In addition to a beautiful 10ft interface, there is global search, which allows you to search apps for content right from the main screen (provided individual apps develop this integration). This global search can be done via voice and is my preferred method of use. Additionally, there is a global recommendations bar on the home screen that shows content from apps that have integrated it. You can select the content from here and jump right into the action.
Theres also a great, highly underutilized app called "Live Channels." The name is a bit of a misnomer. Its not necessarily live tv, but the UI is similar to what you would find in a regular cable experience. With this app, content is aggregated from participating apps to create "channels" and present them in a traditional tv guide UI. Again, the focus here is ease of access to your content.
And the final big feature I will touch on is built-in google cast functionality. Basically, every official Android TV device (none of boxes you see on Amazon) can be used just like you would use a Chromecast device. This is great for apps/developers that have not gotten around to updating their apps to support the Leanback UI in Android TV.
Really, it comes down to it that its just a better, smoother more optimized experience for typical use with a TV.

you can sideload Amazon TV (rumour is it is officially coming as it is on some Sony TV's who run Android TV) but with Amazon it is anyones guess
Sideloading is easy as 1.2.3 so no issues...... no idea about now TV

comes with a UK plug and is the international version, so it is essentially exactly what you would get buying in UK, except cheaper  as they are allready in the UK at £80

They seem to be imports and some don't come with uk adaptors so don't really trust buying right now.

is it USA netfflix you want, as if it is not, just use a DNS changer like unblock US, is the simplest way.... I disagree using a VPN on your router as that will make all of your traffic go to the VPN and potentially a lot slower
on other way is you will need to get rid of your sky router, get an Asus router, load Merlin firmware will allows you to add a particular device to a VPN, that will work well, but you are looking at £200 for a decent Asus router

Yes but not in 4K HDR only 1080p at present. Have the below running fine on my Shield but not 4K which at present the only way is the app on the Sony Android TV range. Although as mentioned rumored to be coming.
2 things put me off this box the lack of ethernet and the main reason Android TV OS.
The OS is no further forward than it was when released, most people with Shields want to go full android and access to the full app store not just the few apps available to Android TV.
Downside of full android is you probably need an air mouse to control things.

Try playing the file directly using a stand-alone media player. I've found Plex attempts to transcode videos even when the file will play perfectly well in it's original format.

saayinla
31 Dec 161#57
I am having this issue with Plex also, but I think this only happens if the Audio track is not one that is supported natively in Plex hence the transcoding. I made a startling discovery yesterday, my Sony 49" 4K X8309 can now play my 4k MKV files without any issues using Serviio. I tried the Same on my LG Oled unfortunately it would not have it. Which means I might have to get a proper android box with an OS similar to what is on the SOmy which mihgt mean only the SHield! So I have bought about 3 different android boxes but none has been able to handle my Hevc 4K mkv files, I prefer the convenience of having all the media on my Media Server rather than physical media. I prefer to use the Built in Apps for my Media playing rather than another box hence my journey to SOny few coupld of years ago and now. The fact this box does not have ethernet is a deal breaker for me.
MrJinxy
31 Dec 16#58
So this is basically the OS on a Sony Android TV but on a box?
Million dollar question... to me I prefer this box, but because of its simplicity, I love the fact my recently watch is on the home screen in tiles....but in terms of performance I suspect it is a dead heat... I simply prefer the Android TV OS over Amazons

If it's just for kodi no point, main advantage you can plug in ntfs storage to watch a film instead of streaming.

Where do you recommend for learning about and buying IPTV?
Aeschylus
31 Dec 161#82
make sure it says 'international version' simplest way, the OS is simply a language change, but Netflix and other apps wont work on the chinese version, and the box is not rootable so you need to make sure it will work in this country
eglons
31 Dec 161#83
I've ordered one of these as I need to learn more about kodi and streaming tv in general, I'd appreciate any decent links people have. I'm IT savvy so not frightened of techy sites!
I have one of these from a previous deal posted here. I like the box (it replaced the mini M8S) but the play store is limited compared to normal phone/tablet play store. No iPlayer app for example. However with chromecast built in that's not an issue. Sideloading apps is easy. Mobdro works well. Overall I'm happy with the box. It's certainly not annoying to use like the mini M8S was.

Hot, hot, hot! This is next best Android TV option after the Nvidia Shield (and imo, better than the Shield itself). Imported one from the US a month ago and it has served all my multimedia needs (4K/1080p/local network/Kodi addons/etc.) without problem.
I have the first gen Fire TV so I can't compare 4K playback, but they are both on par for 1080p. For general app use, Android is definitely better, it has much bigger selection of apps and they're better quality too. I also prefer the Android TV UI a lot more than Fire TV's (although I've read that Amazon are launching a new UI similar to stock ATV).
The only downside I can think of is that the Mi Box doesn't have an Ethernet port although you could probably get around this with an adapter.

Good question, and I don't know i am afraid....best bet is to go here....52 pages of lots of technical talk...and ask on there is not already covered
Been waiting for this to be released here (it is only $59 overseas) but based on the UK prices, these are being imported. Whilst it doesn't mean much against the OP price, it's still a significant mark up on their value.
I've ordered from Ali before and been stung on import taxes & customs charges. I'll wait for UK general availability but seems a good box, with lacking 4k.

This has no Micro-SD input! (for 'storage', and/or extra 'installation' purposes, etc?), can this be rectified via something like in-putting a Pen Drive into the back of the 1 USB Port that this Device has?, or .....
And if possible to do so that way, then what becomes of the wireless/Bluetooth Remote Control it comes with then?, can it's included Remote Control function on the Android TV Device WITHOUT a USB input being needed in the first place? (therefore negating the additional/extra 'storage' possibility method's I spoke of earlier instead?), is it possibly to have both?, or .....
Thanx for any advice in advance. :-)

Hi. You need to side load apps. Goto build, tap it until it says you're now a developer. Now goto Dev options and check the unknown sources. This needs to be on. You can now load apps to the mi from a USB drive using es file explorer. I have mine through ethernet now with a USB converter which also has 3 USB ports for drives or in my case a tronsmart game pad. I have played tomb raider today. All was ok. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for that, Any recommended Kodi Build to Install? I want one that works without breaking all the time, currently have the version from the play store installed. Not so much interested the other addons, I have Showbox for movies etc, just want a reliable Home media files player.

Hold that thought, the custom bill normally follows about 2 weeks later
Seriously I have had them all and ever since I tried android interface on a Sony TV about 3 years ago, I have never wanted anything else, absolutely fantastic. I have an LG Oled replacing an android Sony 4k but I miss the interface so much I had to buy this to use as my main device on the OLed TV. TWith Deep colours enabled on both devices the quality is Jaw Dropping except for the flickering issue I seem to have irrespective of which 4k2k resolution I select. Infact the Netlix quality on my Mi box is better than the built in Netflix on my LG Oled.

I think I got a faulty unit.... Remote does not work (tried different batteries)...Then plugged in an USB keyboard, but unit is unresponsive and the lag is unbelievable.....Tried Android TV App...It took a while to get it paired but then unit has rebooted....Impossible to use keyboard now.....
I will try now to remove batteries from remote, disconnect tablet and laptop from WiFi (congestion) and reboot device.
Do you guys think I should try a factory reset or update device (if I can go into settings at all)????
Cheers

I sent MCMart a message by logging on to my account on AliExpress and explaining that the unit is faulty.
I paid using my Amex card (<£100 so not much help from Amex I take it).

Hard luck on the faulty unit :-( I read some articles on xdadevelopers about recovery mode etc but it looked like you would need a functional remote to get in there in the first place? I don't have a unit myself to try I'm afraid.
I think most aliexpress sellers will be afk for the next few days for Chinese new year, but hopefully you'll get something sorted soon.

Ok mine came today - on the downside it came with the American plug and one of those cheap adapters.

SPMC player every format I had.
So again thanks OP

3 Feb 171#223
It came with an American plug - I went to Tesco and bought a fused UK travel plug it was 4 quid but it holds the plug securely.
It was either that or cut the plug off and rewire it - a new plug in Tesco is a pound but I wasn't sure how the American wiring looked so I thought better safe.
I'm sure the plug they sent would have been fine but I just don't like using the cheap Chinese ones.

Got mine today, works a treat. Thanks op for posting.
If you want reliable network performance I ordered this usb network adapter. Just tested and works a treat.
Thanx for that, I had wondered about all them ones too (good to know that all is capable ..... ) :-)
Mine came about 4 days ago, but as yet, haven't had enough time to set it up, yet alone play around with it, etc?.

4 Feb 17#226
Thanx, but in using this, you'll then LOSE your one and only USB socket on your Google Box!, as only 1 USB socket comes with this Chrome/Android Device, so stuff's like then being able to play media via an external hard drive plugged into it, etc would then become blatantly null and void? (unless however, there's another way around it/that ... ) :-)
Opening post

There are going tutorials online
on other way is you will need to get rid of your sky router, get an Asus router, load Merlin firmware will allows you to add a particular device to a VPN, that will work well, but you are looking at £200 for a decent Asus router
Only box I really loved was the Apple TV 4, but in our bedroom the remote was a nightmare, my wifes big ass would constantly touch the remote mid film..... loved that box
This would be ideal with plex running off my shield downstairs.
ahh you mean Gaming??
then not so good.... TBH it was not sold as a gaming device.... pretty much the same as your phone.... if you want gaming, Shield is the way to go
And no its not for Netflix, but DirecTV (US Satellite service), NBC Sports etc basically US TV channels. Hmm I haven't tried using a DNS, might give it a go. thanks
Look up RetromaniacsUS on facebook
all the reviews have said gaming is ok... on par with your phone.... but it is not it's strength
Thanks
Thanks
you just press the circle button and hold it
https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/development/amazon-prime-video-demand-android-tv-t3278778
The OS is no further forward than it was when released, most people with Shields want to go full android and access to the full app store not just the few apps available to Android TV.
Downside of full android is you probably need an air mouse to control things.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PC0P2DI?psc=1
Kodi works pretty great on it already so just wondering the benefits
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PC0P2DI?psc=1
How do you tell the difference, and what is the difference for future reference, please? As in the description it says the OS is in English?
Guy on there sells it, but for all the sports etc I think it is £30 a month or something, you do get a lot of channels though

I've ordered from Ali before and been stung on import taxes & customs charges. I'll wait for UK general availability but seems a good box, with lacking 4k.
Thanks OP. Hot.
I have ordered from Aliexpress before a few times. You are normally OK regarding import duties if it comes via the Post Office. I ordered one item and they included 'free' DHL delivery, I got stung for an extra £22 by DHL ( they invoice you separately ). This was dispatched via normal slow delivery so should slip though. Fingers crossed..

I've just purchased a Samsung ue49ku6400 smart tv.
how will this box help me with the features of the TV?
as in the TV comes with Netflix etc built in.
sorry if I sound dumb
mine has been shipped today
Is that price before TCB? (& as such now expired?),,or inclusive of the TCB Discount? (& as such still valid in any way?).
Thanx.
I am stuck between this and the fire tv - as I have prime so i would use the Fire TV home screen and I know how to put Kodi and etc. on it Plus it has an ethernet port and more USB ports.
But then this has built in ChromeCast and argubably a better interface.
Decisions, decisions
Am i missing something or is Android TV very new and not yet developed properly?
Any help for an old man appreciated.
