Been looking for a while for a 1tb drive for all the Xbox one games the kids will be getting for Christmas
Although the WD store says free shipping on orders over £50 I wasn't charged at all for shipping.
The 2TB is £51 so qualifies anyway

Sometimes the refurb/recertified drives (if they are not simply customer returns) will be where there was nothing wrong with the disk itself, but the PCB part may have needed replacing (either a fault with the PCB or possibly SMART tripped when it shouldn't have been). The read head is another thing that could be a cause for replacement (getting stuck for example).
Getting a recertified direct from WD should be fine though, as I doubt they'd use sneaky tricks to bypass a drive with failing platters (and I'd imagine they do test them to make sure they are not bad). Getting one off Ebay is something I'd avoid like the plague though.

I purchased the 1tb passport new just over a year ago for the Xbox one and it failed a few week back the click of death.
It puts me off WD drives. I've had so many drives fail which have mainly been WD or Seagate

I've got 14Tb worth of WD drives spread across about 5 or 6 devices, all refurbs. Never had a problem with any of them. I've only ever had Seagates fail. Everyone's experiences are different.

I've got six of the recertified 2tb Ultras, and I've never had a single problem with any of them. The same goes for my two 4tb MyBooks, other than Windows only recognising one of them at a time until you alter some simple config....but that was down to Windows, not the drives. These are good drives and excellent value in my opinion, so heat added!

I have one of these, purchased for £32.99 back in April 2015. Used it every day since and it's never missed a beat.

do these come with any kind of warranty?
All I can see is that they are offering 30 day money back guarantee.

No way, bought one once - never again. One of the few failures I have ever had.

I wonder what the failure rates on re-certified drives is.
What have they done to recertify it? Told the disk to ignore certain bad block areas? I bet they are more prone to failure overall as something went wrong to begin with.

I was always of the belief that recertified is in ways better than 'new'. For starters they're cheaper, they probably have to go through more stringent testing before resell and many of these drives will be 14-day returns (or similar) with nothing wrong in the first place. Anyway, hard disks don't last forever, they need replacing so may as well get some costs savings along the way.

Passport Ultra is faster, but they are all mechanical drives so the difference isn't huge

thanks for the deal...
Bougth one portable 2tb at 51.99 good price!
I think that recertified are good deals. They are checked invidually for normal operation and then shipped.

Good deal
I have a few wd recertified drives and have had no problems with them
All arrived very well packaged and actually appeared new
I have a 750gb, 1tb and 2tb from them, can't remember what I paid but this seems about right
Only downside is the kinda slow delivery as they come from elsewhere in Europe, can be a couple of weeks until it arrives
