We're on our second BT Smart Hub (aka Home Hub 6) and it's bloody diabolical!
The firmware is glitchy so trying to get it to assign a reserved IP is hit or miss, and even then it shows the wrong information, also, you can't block specific URLs or domains.
It's a shame the firmware can't be replaced as of yet.

Arrived today and set up and using. Did not need a password etc.
Both down and up wireless speeds have improved, too soon to see if the constant wifi dropouts have been cured.

You should be able to put the virgin media hub into modem only mode and connect a cheaper wireless router (without integrated xDSL modem) to it.

You'd still need the virgin hub in modem mode and you'd lose one of the LAN ports on this but according to the TP-link site yes you can use it as an ethernet based router if you want to.
hi. I am with sky fibre.Can I purchase this and use my existing sky router as a repeater ? if so will my sky router need to be plugged into a telephone line? thanks

You can use this with Sky Fibre and you can connect directly to the phone socket and do away with the sky router (until you need support, do don't go throwing it away!).
The procedure I followed to enable this on sky fibre was somewhat techie so you need to be prepared for that.

bt hub 6 has good wifi performance so only advantages are with more advanced options such as allowing a guest network. Other modem routers such as sky hub 2.0 have terrible wifi performance and only 10/100 ethernet so will see tangible gains from an upgrade.

My homehub is shocking, forever needing to reboot it...when it does work it does have a good range but its reliability is poor

Hi I have a BT router/modem I want to get a better wireless signal upstairs. I have a interview cable running from my BT hub to the upstairs and could hardwire at bit of kit upstairs. Would any of these be the thing I'd need?

Great buy, good product. Has improved my WiFi Coverage as expected and speed is as good if not slighter better than my original router.
I can also verify I have this working on Sky Fibre after doing a firmware update. Usual steps of extracting your username and password from your original sky router (using wireshark) and cloning your mac address need to be followed.

Actually you may not need the username/password anymore, you still need to send something in DHCP option61 but they don't seem to much care about what that something is as long as it encodes properly.
When I last had sky fibre I sent the string bacons encoded into hex and it let me on

You've got the HG633 I'll bet, more like a soup-er router. Latest firmware and its still... Was thinking of getting the VR900 in our household but there's many mixed reviews for modem routers as opposed to only routers, and these aren't the most power efficient either, running rather hot according to some.

Worth noting that the n300 is only wireless N, whereas this is a wireless AC model. I'm not a heavy user or a gamer but still noticed the performance improvement going from N to AC.

If you just need a basic Wireless xDSL Modem Router that will provide better wireless signal than the ISP provided junk then the TP-Link TD-W9970 N300 Wireless VDSL/ADSL Modem Router is probably all that is needed for the vast majority, The VR600 has extra features that most people do not need.
Try the cheaper option first, if not good enough for your needs then send it back for a full refund and order a higher end model. :smiley:

Might be worth checking the price of the version without the built in DSL modem (since you won't be using that on virgin media)
