My local ASDA had been picked clean of the clearance games deals from before Xmas, but was happy to get "The Last Guardian" there for £25. The game has its issues, inc. occasional framerate dips when entering new large areas etc, but I've really enjoyed it.

Received my copy on the 27th from Amazon. Loving the game, the interaction with Trico is fine as are the controls most of the time. The amount of heart they put into creating the mythic creature is clear.

I was going to hold off on buying, not due to any of the comments from people unable to play the game and getting frustrated which I felt was their own limitation rather than the game (it doesn't hold your hand through the process, other than a small amount of narrative thought it's just you and the creature throughout), I was going to hold off due to the framerate issues. Thankfully the framerate hasn't really bothered me at all, and will give me a good reason to play through again when I get hold of a ps4 pro!

Beautiful game!

Likewise at Asda. My local Asda is terrible for video games - very limited selection and no hardware at all - so I miss out on all the Asda deals posted here, but this time even they have a few copies of The Last Guardian at £25. Although I'll have to check Sainsburys first as I'm sure I have at least £25 in Nectar points.

Royal Mail are also guilty, true enough. But let's be real - Amazon are the worst employer by a country mile - and are the most arrogant to boot. Oh and lest anyone forget they're a great go-to for illegal bootleg recordings which despite being told about they refuse to remove from sale. Arrogance also of course begins with the letter A....

Aye, it echoes my earlier posts in this thread.

I have this feeling this explains why so long in development.

Ico and SotC were masterpieces, especially so Ico, which The Last Guardian is actually quite similar to in theme.

The great thing about Ico was the emotion it evoked, beauty and wonder. A big part of this was the relationship between the player's character and the mute(?) girl. In Ico the vast majority of the time you led her around, but in some parts she co-operated with you to make progress.

The Last Guardian seems like it wanted to evolve this, here your companion is Trico, the theme is similar, a silent companion you work with to progress, but here the companion plays much more of a role.

The issue is getting Trico to do what you want. When it doesn't, which is often, the feeling evoked is frustration, and this completely overrides any feeling of wonder and beauty that Ico managed so well.

I envision much time spent with the developers being well aware of this, with them trying to remove the frustrations. They must have known this problem exists, and that this issue risks fundamentally breaking what made Ico so unique and special and what should be the primary "feel" for The Last Guardian.

Perhaps some other pressure led to the release now, but I honestly see this game as incomplete. I cannot see the devs after working this long on it, and (clearly) being aware, would want it released with the boy/animal control system in this state.

I dunno maybe I'm being overly harsh, I was a big fan of Ico. I will probably go back and try again at some point.

Sorry for being a reactionary tool despite playing the game from start to finish. Just to add some more weight to my personal opinion please find the attached comments from a reviewer (popular review site) today.

"In The Last Guardian, the camera and controls directly impede the player, something that has been consistently criticized by a wide variety of people. Not to mention that having the puzzles based around a giant mythical animal that doesn’t really obey your commands doesn’t exactly help matters much either.

So regardless of whether you rate the ‘experience’, or whatever that forcibly ambiguous nonsense means, the game itself is limited by very real problems when it comes to its basic input and how you can play it."

26 Dec 16 #156
If you have bought this then my advice is play it quick and sell it quick. If you have seen the cex trade in price its £32 but won't be for long. Goddamn awful game! You have to rely on the computer AI to do what you need when commanded but it's awful and extremely frustrating because it won't do as it's told half the time. The transition animation is terrible and also dosnt do what you intend. Took mine to cex this morning in a quiet village 5 minutes after opening and apparently I'm the 4th person to trade in today and the 4th person to say the game is awful. If you haven't bought I would recommend waiting this will drop in price like a rock.

If anyone's on the fence about this, just get it. Seen a few complaints here:

-The graphics being PS3 quality.

There's nothing on PS3 that compares to this and some of the visuals in this game have blown me away like nothing else this generation (hard to say where without spoilers). The art style is timeless.

-The controls are bad.

The controls seem awkward for the first 10 minutes then they're fine. It's like when you give a controller to someone who's never played games before and they run round with the camera pointed at ground. The controls aren't bad, you're just not used to them yet. They've also been improved in the most recent patch.

-The beast doesn't listen to you.

Completed the whole game with one single problem, and it turns out it was because I was doing it wrong anyway when I looked up the solution. The amount of playthroughs I've seen online with people getting frustrated at the AI when they're spamming or giving it completely the wrong commands is insane (IGN were terrible for this). Give it a command and wait a few seconds, let it get into position and process the commands it's already been given! Watch what it's doing.

-It's reviewed badly.

It's in the top 20% of games on Opencritic right now, Eurogamer gave it a rare Essential and many people have called it a masterpiece. Fair enough if you only ever play Fifa or Call of Duty you may not have the patience for it, but it's definitely not a bad game.

I'll probably go back given how much I loved Ico, but what was the final straw for me last night..

A wooden ledge above, me pointing to it so Trico can move himself nearer so I can climb up his back and so forth...

I point he wanders towards it, encounters an arch, pathing gets confused, he turns round, sometimes he half gets through.

Eventually I get him out past the arch to the area I want, but in the window of time it takes me to jump onto his leg he starts to head back! So I try getting on his back first then "directing" him but he then heads over to a nearby wall which is NOT where I'm pointing! And so forth...

After 15 minutes of this runaround I turned it off. :disappointed:

Intentional because "dumb animal" or just bad implementation I cannot say but the feelings it evoked were frustration and anger, not the feelings of wonder and beauty with Ico.

Of course your mileage may vary, others may feel different, I may "get past it" if I give it another shot, and well it's only £25 so why not. But I cannot help feeling it is getting scored higher than it should due to it's "legacy".

Could someone who loved it pipe up, am I wrong?

Bought Last Guardian, I am big fan of Ico and SotC.

I was so disappointed with Last Guardian, the controls are shocking, not just of the main character (which is to be expected if you've played the others) but of the "beast". There are points where you're there for like 15 minutes trying to get it to do what you want and it just won't. It's a game that's supposed to evoke a feeling of beauty and wonder, but instead this is completely overshadowed by feelings of frustration and anger. -(

So annoying, the rare times I day one to support the creators it's less than a week before it's almost half price :stuck_out_tongue:

Ordered. Sweet. What a price !

24 Dec 16 #58
Amazon don't supply the launch version, plus is slightly dearer for non-prime members.
nwarne89
24 Dec 16 #57
Amazon seem pretty quick at matching recently. Already ordered from shopto even though amazon would be cheaper for me oh well!
Illusionary
24 Dec 16 #56
Why not just order from ShopTo?
hotmep
24 Dec 16 2 #55
amazon have price matched, so £22.99 with Prime

Damn... wasn't expecting this to drop this low until Jan.

23 Dec 16 #51
Does anyone know if a sequel is currently in development for the PS4 with actual PS4 quality graphics? They have lots of catching up to do after they missed the PS3 era.

amazon needs to pricematch

Is it just the addition of a cardboard sleeve that makes the Launch Edition special? Love the artwork.

This is so bad for my bank balance, I need to stop coming here! So many games unopened to play now! Great price though!

23 Dec 16 #41
413 people about to order? lol cheers op not really looked into this game but ordered it anyway to give it a go. Got way to much to play due to this site! Ordered about 6 games in the last 2 weeks
northlondon01
23 Dec 16 #40
The problem is I want it delivered to France, and it won't let me put that address as the delivery address, and it warned me about having the correct address, so won't charge the extra postage and in my experience shopto's service isn't the best and I don't think they're open until the 28th!
debesis26
23 Dec 16 #39
Same here. But I really wanted to support the developer. No regrets

God the shopto site is awful. I've been a member for years, but not ordered much lately, however they won't let me ship to a different address until I've placed two orders, and I've placed loads!

So guess that means I won't be getting it. Hopefully TGC or Amazon will price match.
