Red food colourant is beetle blood (Cochineal or something like that)

Not anymore. They replaced it a while ago with colour derived from beetroot so that vegetarians/vegans could still eat the product.

You learn some depressing news every day - Glazing agents (Shellac, Beeswax, Carnauba wax) - Shellac is beetle poo!
it's not just jelly beans. I can't remember if it's confectioners sugar on the ingredients that means it's beetle poo. something like that....I believe it gives it the hard shines coating. :smiley:
