These are premium devices. You're paying for the last 10% of industrial design, build quality and overall UX. Some people find this valuable. Some people do not. If you're happy with cheaper devices, that's great.

What can this do that the Chinese ones at a fraction of this price can't?

Have the i5 16gb RAM variant and I've got to be honest I have serious realibility issues it's been back to MS.
Being a IT manager I was very surprised in the amount of problems I've had with this considering the price and reputation of the Surface range.
Main issues for me are device locks up and also device stuck when coming out of sleep/hibernation

I didn't think a version existed with an i5 and 16GB ram.

Nice try.. there is no i5/16GB Surface Pro.. if you don't even know what you're buying then this is probably not the right device for you and your organisation

seems cheaper direct with MS for this one: 1078.99 compared to PCW being 1169.99?

Are there Chinese equivalents with i5 processors or better? Genuine question, because I need to get one for my wife, but she doesn't need to pay the premium for the MS version.

Jesus my mistake it has 8GB and not 16GB, this place gets worse.
Feel obliged to take a photo with my surface and name but then I really have stooped just to meet people expectations.

To be fair you've set expectations pretty low so i wouldn't worry about it.

People are rude to you because there was no need for you to tell everyone you were an "IT Manager". You're basically holding a sign over your head saying "I have a managerial position in IT so I definitely know I'm talking about".
But in the process you balls it up and listed the wrong specs that destroyed your credibility as an "IT Manager".
Maybe this help someone save a bit if you intrested for both devices it sell one and keep one. It's working out as follow:
Surface book i5/256/8gb - £1189
Surface pro 4 i5/256/8gb - £721
Xbox 1s 500gb + Fifa2016 - £249
Basicly if you add 1 xbox for 249 you get 249 off from each device in cart on top of 10% off. posibly quicdo cashback. Still overpieced but best deal around in suppose...
