It has a tv out port. You could connect it to a small 9inch LCD screen while you set it up. That's provided you have such a screen though. If not, place it, then check the recording on your computer.

I've been looking for ages for a smallish rechargeable dashcam. But this one looks a bit naff. Reading the reviews of this sounds like the footage is of low quality and battery lasts just 70 mins. Also is this for a car ? Good for the money though OP,
Might buy a cheap smartphone and a car mount from ebay and just record video on that ?!

I downloaded an app called Daily Roads (after someone on here recommended it), not used it yet but it does run in the background so you can have your sat nav running in the foreground.
the FOV totally depends on your phone lens though. I bought a cheap fish eye lens off ebay which improves the FOV a little.

To be fair they don't make it clear that there is a waiting period between ordering and dispatch (where the 7-10 days actually comes in). Totally understandable at this time of the year the waiting period would be long, mine was about a week back in November. 5th of December is cutting it pretty close

To be fair I have purchased lots of stuff from gearbest, read stories of people not receiving items etc, I have received all my items in reasonable time except one, I emailed and received a full refund next day. They said they had tracked it to delivery company in England and then no trace, I thought feeble excuse and guess what it arrived next day, obviously been opened including box, couldn't fault customer service. I emailed to tell them it arrived and they let me have it half price.

They are based in China. And I never believe the "Warehouse in the UK." because the stock will always be out of stock, resourcing from another Warehouse scenario. The rule of thumb for buying anything abroad is to expect it to take 4 weeks regardless of their promises. If you get it sooner, well done!
Obviously PQ is nowhere near a Mobius and colour accuracy, exposure etc seem a bit off however more than acceptable I'm sure if you simply need to prove you were not at fault in an accident. However, PQ at night may be off in common with many of these dirt cheap cameras.
winstonmanc
23 Dec 16#28
Banggood and gearbest, aliexpress, etc are fine so long as you factor in the delivery time.
But these cameras are crap. I had one for a remote control plane (I think this type of thing is their real intended use) but quality is awful.

They can also be placed where they are almost impossible to be seen from outside the car by the local crack head looking for a quick smash and grab.

23 Dec 16#30
Yeah could use my mobile. Thing is its a huge note 4 and I really want something small and discreet ideally. Graham1979 suggested a Mobius which I've never heard of but looks small enough to tuck in unnoticed behind the rear view mirror. I've just sent an email to hobbyrc to see if they stock a mount for a car or if the supplied kit is adaptable for a car.
Will check out that app though, thanks for the suggestion.

Last time I went to the Gearbest site they harvested my email address from my browser, same link a friend of mine started getting emails from them for an address he doesn't use much any more.... Not keen on this practice - hence won't buy from them.
Btw I have a Mobius as well for a few years, I don't know if anything as surpassed it as a cheap good quality cam. It has no screen, but the LEDs tell you what it's doing. I have mine so it starts recording when it gets power , connected to USB from lightersocket.

Agreed. Same thing with me for the recent deal on min m8s Android box. Said in stock. Said 10 days delivery but I expected more anyway. Check it 3 weeks later and it's not been despatched yet. Click the option to rush order (why isn't that just standard) and get confirmation it is shipped from Switzerland the next day. Another 2 weeks pass and I check. Then says shipped from China a few days prior, leading to even longer wait. Would never use gearbest again.

For some small projects and maybe a static focused camera these would be fine, but seriously as a dashcam?! What good is one without automatic overwrite facility, automatic sensors for any accidents and locking footage and antishake. Considering now you can get decent dashcams for £50, it would be a tenner wasted towards one if that is your intention.
It records video in MJPEG format, which is always a sure sign of a cheap/low quality processor. It's essentially just taking lots of JPEG photos and sticking them together without any clever interframe compression.

23 Dec 163#56
Dashcams only record in short 3 or 5 minute segments on purpose.
If you have an incident where you need to send the footage to the police or insurance you don't want them trawling through hours of your driving so you just send the small few minutes video file. Your memory card will be full off these files in date and time order and the oldest one will get recorded over after a few hours use so you will have a continuous loop.
Also a good dashcam will have a button to save the current file from being overwritten, I used this feature on mine a few weeks ago when a police car passed me at a really dangerous speed and triggered a speed camera just as I was going past it at 30mph so if needed I had proof it wasn't me.
edit: It appears theres not many left now. Tons on ebay from reputable sellers for less than £9 though. Do not know why you would buy from gearbest.

Putting cameras behind rearview mirror is getting impractical because modern cars have the rain detector mesh there.
Is there anywhere else a mobius can go at the front? They are great for rear facing.
anonimousse
23 Dec 16#72
No you did not!!! You specifically mentioned that 'this' is not for you because it has no screen. You have already ignored recommendations in this thread. You are one of those time-wasters who always ask for 'recommendations' but have a long list of 'must-haves' on a budget of a tenner. When somebody asks you a specific question you get abusive!
gilders
23 Dec 162#73
I have a Mobius (no screen) and it's not at all impractical.
The lens has a wide enough field of vision that it doesn't need to be pointing perfectly ahead. You can always remove the micro sd card to check footage on your phone or laptop. So setting it up is no more difficult than a dash cam with a screen.
The only other time you'd need to touch the dash cam is if you were in an accident. You would do the exact same procedure whether you had a screen or not - you would remove sd card and send the footage to insurance company from your phone/laptop/PC.
Really can't see a scenario where I'd be involved in an accident and I'd think - damn if only it had a screen!

Get the Autovox B40 wedge dash cam (or whatever is the updated version of it). Very hidden, has a screen, has all the dashcam features such as looping file when full, record on start etc.. so you don't even need to think about it once installed. Had mine for couple of years now, works a treat and used to overturn an accident that insurance initially said was my fault.
Just checked some footage of this tinycam HERE and it's better than my Blackvue DR500GW which I paid £218 for, albeit over three years ago now (cam quality has came a long way in three years I guess).

Mine arrived and I can answer both parts.
Can it record whilst charging - Yes stated on instructions
Can it continuously record (i.e overwrite) - Mentions in instructions; 'Automatically save 5minutes continous Video, Cycle Cover'
So again that seems a yes but not tested yet. Bought mine off ebay.

Any chance you can hook it up to your car and test it during day / night and then let us know?

I will do at some point, Im not expecting much from the nighttime but my purpose is for a car i only use during the daytime. I'll probably test it next weekend.
Someone mentioned how to attach. I've gone very simple.
Velcro, cut to a small square and find a place to put the camera in appropriate position (dependant on wires etc...). The velcro will come off the dashboard as well if you ever wanted to remove it just might need to clean the bit of glue left behind.

Nice one, looking forward to your review. I already have methods I currently use for stealth installs etc.
When you test, could you tell us the following:
1) Does it run hot?
2) Does it have a setting to shut down gracefully (i.e. can if close the recording and camera without damaging the unit or sd card when power is instantly turned off?
3) Any loss between Video clips and also the size of each clip.
4) Any LED indicators on the unit while in operation
5) Big ask this, but could you upload a video somewhere of it in use in a car?
Thanks

Mine arrived a few days ago.
A couple of thoughts..
1) It absolutely burns through the memory. In 720p/30 mode it's creating a 500-600Mb .avi every 5 minutes, so the 32 gig card I put in will only record for a few hours before it starts overwriting earlier files.
2) Uses a tiny proprietary USB cable (smaller than Micro) and annoyingly it sticks out of the side. This is a problem when recording while charging, as the bracket that comes with the camera swivels. Therefore, due to the weight of the cable on one side, the camera ends up tilting. The swivel is very loose. I've ditched the bracket and use blu-tack instead.
3) Yes, runs hot
4) Grainy picture, though is smooth. I've yet to try during proper daylight though - just giving it a run in the car during the evening.
5) Sound is surprisingly good - it picked up my moaning at other drivers loud and clear
6) No LED when operating. The instructions are confusing and it's hard to get it to actually start recording, but once you do the blue LED goes off.
7) The night-vision mode is pretty useless, as the lights seem to have a tiny range, about 18 inches max. Everything beyond that distance is black.
Still, not bad for a tenner I guess. It's my first 'DV' cam and good enough for occasional use in the car when I'm making long journeys.

I am not sure if this is going to be suitable as a car dashcam. This needs to be turned on / turned off manually and how many of us will remember to do so every time we drive. Ideally a dashcam should turn itself on and start recording when the ignition is turned on, i.e., when the cigarette lighter socket gets power.

Thanks for this, no autostart on ignition is a deal-breaker for me (dashcam use)

I bought a cheap fish eye lens off ebay which improves the FOV a little.
worst mail order firm ever!.

Obviously PQ is nowhere near a Mobius and colour accuracy, exposure etc seem a bit off however more than acceptable I'm sure if you simply need to prove you were not at fault in an accident. However, PQ at night may be off in common with many of these dirt cheap cameras.
But these cameras are crap. I had one for a remote control plane (I think this type of thing is their real intended use) but quality is awful.
They can also be placed where they are almost impossible to be seen from outside the car by the local crack head looking for a quick smash and grab.
Will check out that app though, thanks for the suggestion.
Btw I have a Mobius as well for a few years, I don't know if anything as surpassed it as a cheap good quality cam. It has no screen, but the LEDs tell you what it's doing. I have mine so it starts recording when it gets power , connected to USB from lightersocket.
Jeez, the battery life must be awful too. What battery?

Probably about 50 times better.
Been using for a year.
Faultless and had two incidents in which I used the footage as being non-fault.
not micro usb?
I use it as a removable camera in my taxi but my family cars all have mobius cameras fitted because they are so easily hidden above the rear view mirror.
Is there anywhere else a mobius can go at the front? They are great for rear facing.
"Slightly disappointed that this is screen less. I'm in the market for a dashcam with screen, any recommendations?"
"Wouldn't mind paying extra for the screen of course, but a screenless dashcam or just any camera is just inconvenient and impractical."

I use the former and it's superb.
Make sure you order direct from the manufacturer on eBay.
After sales is superb.
These filling station deals are transient, but will reappear at some point.
I think it might work well on the bicycle - worth a try
The Chinglish from the Gearbest Girl is the best! Better than my Englinese tho'!

I am sure I read somewhere that insurance might be cheaper in the future for people with them
It's a 1080p video camera for a tenner FFS.
