Did you tune it using TruePlay? When I bought my first Play 1 for the kitchen I was underwhelmed by the sound quality. Then I set it up with TruePlay and was astonished by the difference. So I bought another one and now it's fabulous.
As someone used to old-school British amplifiers where a tone control is considered unnecessary fiddling with the pure sound, I really didn't expect TruePlay to do much, but it certainly does.

Tune-in works fine on sonos. The phone is used just to instruct the sonos speaker what to play so it makes no difference if the phone rings or runs out of batteries or leaves the house - the music keeps on playing as sonos is communicating directly with tune-in, not the phone (unlike bluetooth)

There are some good number of weaknesses with play bar few I remember are no DTS support and no hdmi input , expensive and it has been quite a few number of years it has been launched so not the best SONOS ! Purely my personal opinion and reasons for not buying playbar

I was in the same situation 10 days back - but finally went ahead and bought a new play 5 to use with my 2 play1s which I have been using since 2 yrs. I feel a stereo pair of play 1s sounds a lot better and I enjoy that more than just a single play 5 . I bought play 5 for line - in purpose ( I felt sonos Connect is over priced !) . I sometimes use play5 connected to tv and play 1s in stereo and stream hd video songs on tv .At my home and with best quality of music play 5 did not sound as great as it sounded on demo music play at the store !

Don't worry about my comment. I just don't understand Apple, Sonos, Naim mentality it is beyond my scope of comprehension. I just don't get how paying more gets you something better in 2016. Yes in 1860 or even 1950 paying more for a quality product meant you were getting the best but I find I can buy good quality products for less if I am savvy and shop around rather than buying blinkered products from the likes of apple and sonos
Yes of course I do "Zombie Style" or sometimes to be a rebel I turn up my old Denon and Bose 305's mounted under my motorhome and frighten the neighbours. I wouldn't waste my money on this tat though. there are plenty of cheaper alternatives not aimed at apple users. Google it. It's not hard try this one.
Did you find the same thing for a lot less money? Cmon don't tell fibs you know deep in your heart these are for yuppies

Yes, Sonos support is great. I was having trouble with my system, and a patient Dutch guy spent about three hours working through everything. Turned out my router was faulty in the end. Only negative issue was that I tried to impress him by mentioning my 200Mbit internet connection and he told me he worked from home as well and had a gigabit connection. C'est la vie.

Thanks for that, I didn't know you could stream from a NAS, will try this out tomorrow, and poss also the cast option. My Sonos 3 has been in a box for 6 months so maybe I've just not kept up with things. Just took it back out last week, It is pretty over-priced for what it is and I'm not sure I would go for the full set up as opposed to a buying a traditional system but if you are looking for wireless and integration with your devices this is still probably the best of the lot.

You could down the cheaper route - get chromecast audio and connect to a suitable speaker. That would work for the MP3 - not sure about the others though....
What about the Sonos connect? could you hook that up to the TV and PS4 and this would send signal to the Sonos speaker?. Not cheap though. The other option to think about is the Denon Heos system - the lastest version of their speakers have bluetooth and line in.

It really depends on what you want. If just a mono speaker like an amazon Echo would suffice the Bose I'm sure is great.

To be honest never tried Google Music app. Started using Poweramp (Which I find user-friendly) since I bought Android phone and never bothered to try any other app. Having thoughts about getting BOSE SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II instead. Atleast it will cover 50% of my requirements apart from TV and PS4. Not sure how much will I lose on sound quality.

I bought the last Sonos sub in Boston today for just £449 which is a total bargain but after trying it out and testing it I returned it. Bitterly disappointed with the sound quality. Just not good enough to command these prices. Yeah the convenience and app system is great and flexibility of system but sound quality isn't up there. Shame as I really wanted to buy into the concept.

Hi
Amazon Prime Music IMHO is very good and free plus 250 track 'locker' free or approx £20 per year to store zillions of tracks.
The user interface on the SONOS app works very well, so you have access to over 1M tracks
Plus the Play 1 is reduced to £134.10 on amazon at the moment with their 'No Quibble' returns policy
hope this helps

Sorry, by local media I mean music that's physically on your phone. In the Sonos app you just specify "this device" and it'll give you the option of streaming that to the system.
With regards to the app support. Like I said, with Sonos opening their API up it wouldn't take a great deal for other audio apps to do exactly what Spotify has done, to basically allow the Sonos to be the played to device rather than just the device speakers or bluetooth. Google Play music has already done it.

You can do the same for local media on Sonos. Plus, given they've opened their API I wouldn't be surprised if most audio apps follow suit fairly quickly. Personally I prefer the ability to switch the phone off and let Sonos just carry on playing the music rather than rely on crappy Bluetooth.

Don't forget Trueplay for these speakers it takes them to another level , you will need an IOS device to perform it but it does change them significantly .
The one time I do my Christmas shopping nicely in advance...and the speakers I was going to get are reduced by the biggest amount I've ever seen.

Sonos will happily stream music from your NAS drives. If your phone is Apple it will stream music from there, but only from your Apple music library on the phone, via the Sonos app, not from any random music player. Best off getting all your music on the NAS.
Echo integration is available via free tools, but requires some significant effort. You need to install "node Sonos" on a server somewhere, then configure an Alexa skill and Lambda function on Amazon Web Services. I'm a techie and it took me a couple of days (doesn't help that the AWA UI is constantly changing so all the documentation and how-to info is out of date), but I have it working now. See Echo Sonos on Github.
It doesn't really work for selecting individual tracks or artists but is great for playlists, pausing and resuming, etc.

This pretty much answers your first question "I am directly comparing this to my Sonos Play 1 of which we have three, I would say sound quality wise these are identical, they both sound amazing, nice bass, clear voices and are dead easy to setup and look great in any room, the one reason this wins over my Sonos is you can directly Bluetooth from a mobile phone or tablet to it, it's a winning feature and therefore very strongly recommended and a great device.''

If you mean pairing with the Dot so you can chat and hear Alexa then I don't think you can without some mucking about. There is no easy way to link the Dot to the Play 1. You could get a Dot to speak controls to your Sonos though, just wouldnt be any audible feedback.
You can very easily pair a Dot with a Play 5 though due to its line in.

I'm bias so perhaps not the best person to advise!
ps
those subs can literally shake a dwelling with 2 foot walls and solid floors, mine went back to amazon.
Can you also stream the audio from youtube to this ?
I am a fan of SONOS, the lack of Bluetooth does not effect me.
What streaming service do you use at present?
do you have your own mp3
I have mp3 on my phone, NAS drives, plus i listen to the songs via youtube and other free streaming places available online. I think with Bose (as per your guidance), I can stream this music directly to the speaker ... will make my life so much easy  Will this be right ?
thanks, ordered.

You can very easily pair a Dot with a Play 5 though due to its line in.
