That is true, however Apple are also offering a £29.99 iTunes gift card with each Sonos Play:1 & Play:5 purchased, so makes it a better deal all round. You can claim up to 5 under the promotion as well, so anyone who was looking for 2 Play:1's gets a great deal.

11 Dec 16 1 #68
I can't do the comparison as I don't have the playbar. I have the 1s 5 and sub, and the 5 is superb. I've read a number of reviews about the playbar now and whilst it sounds good, there are issues with how it connects to your system that mean you 'probably' won't get real surround sound if connecting your TV directly to this via optical.

Just as an example, here is a quote from What Hi-fi "But it's a shame the set-up can't handle DTS or any of the higher quality soundtracks such as Dolby TrueHD – the latter due to the limitations of the bandwith of the optical connection. It's also worth noting that many TVs only output stereo sound via optical, so to get proper Dolby Digital 5.1 your set-top box or DVD/Blu-ray player will need to do the decoding, and be connected directly to the Playbar.
Read more at http://www.whathifi.com/sonos/playbar/review#R8YEdC5M1OIwU7J2.99"

The Play 5 is 2nd generation, as is the sub and the 1s. If it's to connect to your TV then you really need to go the playbar route regardless, but if it's just for music, I think the 5 would be my preferred option.

Either way do your homework first, BUT, you only have today on thsi deal, so if you're going to bite, do it soon. :-)

Don't however discount the notion of 2 Play 1s. Not as much bass granted, but the sound is fantastic when paired as Stereo. Add in the sub and you'll have more bass than you know what to do with and you won't know what hit you ( Or your wallet to be fair :-) )

I have a first gen play 5 and a playbar (with sub). Also 3 play 1s in smaller rooms.

To answer the earlier question, without the sub the play 5 sounds far better for music, so 2nd gen will be even better. Even with the sub the play 5 holds its own for all but the deepest bass. I'm not really all that impressed by the playbar as an audio product - you definitely can do better for the money (it's really lightweight without the sub) - but the integration with the rest of the system is just so convenient and looks neat on the wall.

2 of the new play 5s as a stereo pair for TV using the line in would probably be epic if you have space.

Also now holding out for Echo/Alexa integration...

Love Sonos, have 2 Play 1s, a Play 5 and a Play Bar. If you want something that is easy to set up, easy to operate multi room, with great sound and Apple like quality (as well as continued innovation through software) get these. I was a beta tester for Play Bar and got one in the UK when it was still top secret (I had it for months before it was ever even mentioned as a possible new product on the web)- I can tell you Sonos really, really care about their products and the development. Companies with this level of efficacy should be supported.

Chromecast Audio has zoned wireless, multi-room, 96/24, Spotify, Play Music, Tidal, etc. from Apple or Android devices and costs £30 when on offer and £15 when not (and it comes with three months Google Play Music). You can add a Chromecast Audio to any existing hifi, separates, soundbar, receiver, speaker, radio or iPod dock that you already have or want to buy as long as it has an optical or analogue input. If you use the optical output or select the higher quality music option in settings the sound quality is fantastic. I can't even begin to understand why people waste their money on the closed and expensive Sonos system. I suspect it is the latest lifestyle craze, like Bose once was.

11 Dec 16 5 #123
To be fair, they are average sounding for the price and you could do a lot better £/£ with separates if you're thinking about sound quality only. (And I like to think I generally have a clue about them, having used Sonos for nearly 10 years, with 11 devices in the house!).

There's a lot of hyperbole, presumably because a lot of people love their Sonos (and rightly so), but "sounds amazing" and "best I've ever heard" might be pushing it a bit.

Thinking about SQ only is entirely missing the point though, being an all-in-one wireless streaming speaker with the slickest software going, and what so far has been lifetime software support.

Before you spend all your money on Sonos. Have a look at the digifunk 3 on Amazon. It does all the wireless function of a sonos connect amp.
And then you can connect it to any decent speaker or buy some ceiling speakers.

Sonos is hugely marketed and over priced. Watch how much hate suggesting alternatives causes...
Boxrick
11 Dec 16 #137
Bad choice, Denon HEOS sounds terrible compared to Sonos.
J0n35y
11 Dec 16 1 #138
Sound "quality" is hugely subjective - read folks opinions on various headphones for example - but from my perspective I absolutely love my Sonos'. I'm the kind of guy that heavily researches and look to demo things too.

Yes you can better things with seperates but, being blunt, I can't be gassed managing another sperates system in my home. A good system with quality seperates can often mean multiple controllers too. 1 hi-fi (with a Connect) is enough for me. So Playbar and Sub instead for the TV and it's great. Got another Play 3 (gen 2) in my study and it's really enjoyable too.

Do your research, if you don't need multiple ports and you want something that is rock solid and almost wire free then you don't get better.

And 10% off is pretty good!

11 Dec 16 2 #140
Been thinking of getting the Sonos or Heos (favouring HEOS because of the better connectivity and reportedly better sound quality). But I think the multi-room speaker scene is up for a huge change in the next year or so. Devices like Amazon Echo Dot (which I have) and Google Home (GH) will potentially change the way we listen to music - well it has me.

Sonos, HEOS etc are working with Amazon (and presumably Google) to enable voice control via the Echo (and presumably GH). For voice control to work in every room, you will need an Echo or GH in every room (which could be connected to a speaker by an aux in - rather than relatively expensive Sonos or Heos etc). If that's the case, would probably make more sense to have a system like Chromecast audio which works with existing speakers. Or perhaps Sonos etc will launch a new range of speakers with microphones built-in to work with Echo and or Google Home.

It's a complicated decision, compounded by the fact that you are effectively locked into one standard eg Sonos or Heos etc and it's not cheap.

Think I might sit on the fence a while...........

You buy into Sonos for its ongoing support and it's ease of setup and neatness. Lack of midrange is more of an issue for music by comparison to AV. All of these pieces of kit rely on the human ear not being able to recognise the source direction of bass. However most of the time the bass unit is producing mediocre midrange. Midrange frequency source is detectable by the human ear. They are a compromise which will be acceptable to many.

Think I am pretty much decided on a pair of HEOS 1 speakers with battery packs.

I have sat on the fence with the whole wireless speaker thing for years. I am finally going to bite the bullet. As with everything, there will always be improvements in the horizon.
gari189
11 Dec 16 #157
I know what you mean - new technology is always around the corner and you have to bite the bullet sometime.

Been pricing up the HEOS system recently. Did purchase a pair of HS1s from Richer Sounds last week (but did not unpack) reconsidered and took them back yesterday. The Go packs are £50 on the Hughes website

If you get the HS1 from Richer sounds you get a 6 year warranty (and they sent a £10 off voucher for over £100 spend for being on their mailing list). For larger rooms Amazon have the Heos 5 (HS2) in white for £199 for prime members. (If you are not a Prime member you can always join for a month's free trial)

those that think these sound amazing for the money. have you had a £2000 5.1 seperates system before to compare them too?

i mean £500 for a soundbar isnt cheap. £500 for just a sub isn't cheap either. i would be expecting something akin to to a top of the line bk monolith for that kind of money as well as a yamaha ysp 2700 or better ysp 5600.

Basically a lot of people that are buying these are doing so for the wrong reasons.

If you want better sound for cheaper buy a wired system. if you are planning on kitting your whole house out with wireless speakers then buy sonos the only advantage sonos brings is ease of wireless connectivity and zoning, with reasonable sound quality.

basically wired is always better than wireless unless you really need wireless. that goes for sound, internet speed, sky q, everything because wireless only benefit is being wireless everything else is a downside

SONOS user for 6 years I built slowly. I use SONOS everyday its in my top five best ever purchases I use it with Google Play Music and amazon Prime.
I dont bother with TV

• I bought a SUB and although it is for some its not for everyone - it went back.
• If you buy from Currys _buy online_ Don't buy instore pay the extra delivery cost and benefit from "The Consumer Contracts Regulations" formally distance selling regs, otherwise you cant take it back due to box being opened = possible BUYERS REMORSE*****
BUY ONLINE
• IMHO the extra 10% is worth spending and buying from SONOS or JLP (price match plus 2 year warrantee) with SONOS you get 100 days to make sure you are 100% happy:

People need to live and let live. Spending a few 1000 on Sonos may seem a lot but audio gear tends to last and we all lose much more than that on car depreciation, mortgage interest etc.

I love how Sonos is easy to move from room to room with just a mains plug to disconnect, the Trueplay tuning to a room's acoustics, being able to pause it and skip tracks easily from a smart watch or phone, send TV / Film audio into adjoining rooms etc. I can even set it to go off when the phone rings or the doorbell goes. It may only sound 'good' but that's enough for most people, hence their great success.

And even if the sound of the Denon is better than Sonos, the Sonos App is in a different league. Then considered as an overall package, Sonos triumphs. This is the story of any Sonos vs competitor battle. The competitors need to up their devotion to their Apps otherwise their products will continue to fall like flies in this game.

I'm a big Sonos fan (have 9 of them!), and a Bose Soundlink. But the two systems don't really do the same thing. The Sonos works over Wi-Fi, whereas the Bose is Bluetooth (or Aux In connection from another device). There's also the safety issue of 240v power not being permitted in a bathroom, so the rechargeable facility on the Bose probably fits the bill for you...

This is a great piece and although I'm a massive fan of Sonos I won't be buying anymore.

At the last count I now have 15 individual components making up 9 zones in total.

When the Sonos/Dot integration comes in it's going to be amazing

I totally agree that wired is ALWAYS better though. I have a Anthem amp and Wires 5.1 speaker setup and would never think of dumping them for a Sonos 5.1 wireless setup

I'd like a second sub to go with my second playbar as it does make a noticeable difference in a big room.

I already have one sub and would buy another to pair up with my second playbar but not at the current prices. I actually picked up a sub and playbar on release for £900 which was.

Whilst not cheap, the Connect does a fine job when the time comes. Mine is connected to a Soundcast Outcast and it's by far the best outdoor listening experience without cables.

I previously had some outdoor wall mounted Bose speakers (251s) and whilst they sounded great the sound was kept in one area. The Outcast allows booming sound sent from my Sonos setup and 10 hours of battery life all in a weatherproof case that can be moved around a garden or even taken to another house/garden or even field when connected with an audio cable.

I could of course just connect that speaker wirelessly to my amp but then I'd have NO Sonos integration. Anyway my amp is for home theatre Sonos is for everything else.

I've also just been sent two speakers from Libratone to test/review. They are actually very good and have some clever features that even leaves Sonos behind the fact they are Bluetooth AND WiFi too is something that would have been awesome from Sonos from the offset. The pairing functionality (which is similar to NFC on a phone) is very clever and they probably look better than Sonos speakers AND they are also rechargeable so they really can go anywhere

Kind of depends on the layout of your room. We have a stereo pair of play 1s in bedroom in either side of bed and it sounds great. No doubt a play 5 would be great too but the soundspace may not be as good and of course the 5 is a much bigger speaker to find a home for in some rooms

No you don't need a bridging unit to connect them all. If you have one then it'll set up it's own wireless network and the sonos devices will communicate that way. If you don't have the bridge then the sonos units talk over your home wifi, you won't really notice any difference in performance either way.

Good price, heat added. I've had the surround set up for a couple of years and it is excellent. For what it's worth my views are:

1) individual speaker to stream to i think the B&W zepellin is better on sound quality, like for like my zepellin has a better sound but it's not as flexible as the Sonos.
2) if you have your setup on a power save plug it can take 30 seconds for the soundbar to boot up so you get the to pictures much before the sound.
3) it's a bit annoying that if you wanted to use a play one in another room then you have to remove it from the surround sound group and add back in later....surely Sonos could change the software to allow profiles to be created and easily switched between
4) if you want true 5.1 you'll probably need an optical splitter/selector as a lot of tv's downgrade the signal on pass through so for mine I got an optical splitter/selector to take the free direct from the source e.g bluray

All in all great setup and no cables lying around, I got the flexson floor stands for my rear speakers which works well for me!

Hope this helps!

I don't see the fuss with these personally. They sound ok give their footprint, but I sort of felt like they're charging people for the brand name a bit. I'd always recommend a decent amp and speaker combo to show how things really could sound, the problem with that is once you're used to a good setup it's hard not to think these kind of setups as having a serious lack of body to their output. That said, it's a pita running wires!

Picked up a Play:1 2 years ago for £107 when someone posted a Littlewoods pricing mistake that they ended up honouring. It's a decent little speaker, and the app is excellent, a doddle to use and was great for the family to use.

Sonos is becoming the Apple of speakers on HUKD. People hate because the gear is expensive, they don't want to pay the premium (or can't afford to) but the product does its job to a tee with precision class.

In regards to wanting more than one speaker in a single room comes down to what you are listening to i.e. Music, a film, gaming etc.... an individual play 1 is perfect for a simple bit of music, but adding a stereo pair and sub is just going to make that experience more enjoyable.

The Play 5 2nd gen is apparently beyond incredible.
I've a couple of Play 5s 1st gen as a Stereo Pair and they are really great.
Out of the 4 zones we have only one zone that is mono - a Play 3 in the kitchen.
(I would probably have a stereo pair in the kitchen but its only a small kitchen).
IMHO I would prefer 2 x Play 1s and Flexson stands over a single Play 5 2nd gen as I've heard those Play 1s in stereo and they are awesome - as you know.
What room is the Play 5 2nd gen for and would you look to make a stereo Play 5 pair in the future.?
(I built my zones slowly over 6 or 7 years)

Please Please Please All Apple, Sky and sonos lovers please get off this bargain site. How on earth can these products ever become a hot deal. I feel degraded every time a deal for the above three rip off merchants is posted. I love this site but come on how is 10% off an over priced product a deal?
There should be criteria required to be a member of this site
a: Do you have an I phone?
b: Do you have a Sky Subscription?
c: Do you have a Sonos Product?
If any answers are yes then you should not only be denied access to HUKD but should also be put on a telephone list for gullible buyers that could be circulated to the next lower level of scam artists.
I.E Spanish timeshares. Premium bonds, ISAs,
The days have gone where you pay a premium to get a premium product.
This site does help you to buy the best for less although this deal is crap

My opinion is a pretty good one, I am very **** about my sound. Have owned many sets of speakers from a range of manufactures over the years and worked in Hifi for around 7 years so got to experience many of these things on a daily basis multiple times. I also installed them in various different environments from hard to soft furnished.

So purely that basis on the range of what I have heard, value and have experienced that my opinion would be better than a joe average "that sounds decent". I could go into great detail why or how HEOS isn't great in both sound and various other features.

Magazines are often in the pockets of various people a better resource would be a place like AVForums or people like myself who have had chance to compare these products against other similar ones.

Regardless, Sonos remains as an overall package and for the money, ease of use vastly better and sound quality than HEOS in my eyes.

My car is 11 years old 150,000 miles drives like new and I last went on holiday in 2003 we are all different.

That looks like a great speaker! Can it play music over wifi? As I've always found Bluetooth sound a bit of a let down.

I went with the Monitor Audio S200 to replace the Play:1 and it blows it out the water.

11 Dec 16 #284
It depends on the situation you're in. If you're really looking for good sound you won't be going for a Sonos either and will be going for a proper speaker surround sound system in your home. Sonos would be absolutely useless for me because the wifi I get is terrible (new build home area), where 1 step into the back garden means my wifi goes from 1 bar to 0 every couple moments. Also wanting some sound on the go during holidays makes the HEOS a better option with its Go Pack.

If we're going to say no to a speaker because of just sound and not functionality/situational need then you can't really vouch for the Sonos. I very much prefer my SVS SB 2000 Sub along with Cambridge Audio floor standers and Kef rears, to ANY Sonos set up. That doesn't mean Sonos is useful, but in a situation I'm in, it would be.

If you have a speaker option that is better than the HEOS 1 HS2 for showering/bathrooms/moisture situations, capability to play via bluetooth while having a bbq in the outdoors, and just for bringing around on camping getaways/holidays, please do let me know. That isn't sarcastic either  I have the HEOS and Go Pack (£174) from Richer Sounds in my basket so not purchased yet. I was torn between the Sonos 1 and the Bose Soundlink 2 but they don't give me the necessities I listed above :disappointed:

Restrained myself and didn't splash out on a PLAY:5 but came very close, great deal. For those saying it's only 10% and they're the same price all month, the 10% off was on top of the £20-40 discount running at the moment on the PLAY range so it was closer to 20% off RRP which isn't bad for something that rarely drops in price

Errm, not sure that makes sense. I have a Sonos Connect, feeding a Rega DAC, which goes into Naim pre/power amps and then to a pair of ludicrously expensive B&O Nautilus speakers (bought before I had children!). The Sonos is just a source, like my CD player and turntable, but gives me far more flexibility. And if I want to move to the garage (Connect through a Naim Nait and some cheap but decent Mordaunt Short speakers) or the kitchen (pair of Play 1's) then I can have my music move with me. A lot of people seem to assume that Sonos is just the speakers, it's not - it's a full ecosystem which is certainly capable of audiophile results when paired with the right equipment.

Mind you, if I were starting again I'd probably use Chromecast Audios instead. Less convenient (no dedicated controllers), but a hell of a lot cheaper than multiple Connects.
maciejkopec08
12 Dec 16 #295
It makes 100% sense. I'm saying someone can't state that the HEOS 1 HS2 are pointless compare to the SONOS because it depends on the situation. If you want a speaker that is moisture resistant for showers/baths and bluetooth capable then the HEOS makes more sense than the Sonos 1 without any sort of argument.

I'm not saying that Sonos are bad, because I'd prefer them over the HEOS that I'm looking at buying due to better bass BUT they aren't the better option for me. If the Sonos 1's were bluetooth connectable along with being moisture resistant, I would buy them hands down.

My argument was to the individual stating he can explain why the features on the Heos are bad, but for my situation, those features are what makes them a better purchase than the Sonos 1's. Sorry if I'm all over the place. At work and very tired haha

If you have an iPhone 6 or newer and EE contract sim you can use 'Wi-Fi calling' that uses your Wi-Fi ISP to make and receive calls on EE.

12 Dec 16 #300
Yep that's what I've done, I've got several CCs dotted around the house, and as a Google Music subscriber they make a hell of a lot of sense for me, to do what I've done with Sonos would have cost me something like £1000 for the connects, whereas with Chromecast it cost me £90.

At the end of the day people, buy what you want. I'm no audiophile and all 15 of my Sonos speakers sound great to me so I could t be happier.

The flexibility I get to play my own music from a NAS and also TuneIn and Spotify is great (Spotify free wth my mobile contract)

Are there better sounding devices out there, of course there are. Are they as simple to setup and use as Sonos, possibly not. Are those other devices constantly being updated via a beta program that adds new functionality all of the time, I don't think so.

If people want to buy this kit I'm sure most will be happy.

I'll Never switch to Sonos for my home theatre but for general music listening around my home (and for my kids and other half) I can honestly say nothing else would do a better job, for ME.
Red_Robbo
12 Dec 16 #302
Oh puh-lease....! Don't try dictating to others based on your own opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own views and if there are that many Sonos lovers out there, then the company is obviously doing something right, whether you agree or like it or not. For those that are interested in a purchase, any discount off the normal (regulated) shop price is welcome, hence the heat.
Live and let live.

p.s. What's wrong with ISAs?

Sorry for late reply...misses moans if I wake her up going to bed late on a Sunday!

I picked up a couple of Play ones last year when there was a deal on for a pair. I have an old Technics separates system and 1210's wired up to Keff speakers but wanted something to play the pretty large digital collection I have now and was pretty taken aback by the sound those small Sonos Play 1 speakers put out.

Unfortunately I can only just about afford one Play 5 and that is hoping the other half doesn't check what it cost or she'll refuse to put the heating on for the next 3 months!

I may one day look at getting another but it won't be for a while yet. I was figuring on putting the Play 5 in the lounge and hooking it up to the TV, I haven't done any homework on that or if there was anyway of also getting it to work with the numerous media boxes and sticks connected to it i.e. NowTV, Chromecast, Fire & Roku sticks, WD Live TV and an Android media box. I have a small Acer desktop that I use as an HTPC connected to a very old but still sounding good JVC 7:1 home cinema system.

Its not a deal breaker for me if I can't use it with any of those devices, extending the ability to play digital music in other areas of the house is why I've purchased this. The pair of Play 1's are superb together, I just wondered whether to experience them at their best these Play speakers needed to be used in pairs. Sadly I can't see myself getting another for some time yet! I've been watching these Play 5's ever since I got the 1's on Camel and my buy price was £350, (I think I set that thinking they wouldn't ever get that low!) the closest it says they've been is £372.23 and currently they're £389 on Amazon and are tagged as 'Good Buy' so I didn't see them getting any cheaper again for some time if ever.

I've not considered stands as the Play 1's are quite heavy for their size and are placed on a solid flat service but are those Flexson stands as good as people suggest?
