Plenty of people out there use cars for the purpose that are designed and not as some sort of status symbol. These kind of cars have their place for people who need them.

You paint a lovely picture of how easy it easy to buy a 2k car 2nd hand and have the time of your life.

In reality any VW TDI you are picking up at that price will have done some serious mileage and be due for some expensive service schedules even assuming that nothing goes wrong which is certainly not a given. Tax will be a lot more, as will fueling costs, insurance and pretty much every motoring costs.

True, like me, we have a few cars in our household ranging from people carrier to sports car, in 3 years I've covered 25k in the smart, all around town, parking here there and everywhere and to be honest I seem to take the smart out more and more over the other cars,

Ok it struggles with wind on the motorway, but gets up to 80 no problems, gets good mpg, zero road tax, and insurance is very cheap, plus although not the fasted car in the world it feels like a go cart and does make me smile with what it can do, brakes are ferocious you feel really confident in it.

I'm getting another to replace this, thumbs up from me.

normally these deals don't have enough miles but I wouldn't want to do 7000 per year this.

Why?

I've always preferred small cars (Aygo, Sirion, Picanto and latterly the Suzuki Celerio) but the Smart ForTwo has never floated my boat. Rightly or wrongly I see it as too small, too impractical, too expensive and if owners reviews are to be believed, not that reliable or particularly fuel efficient. Each to his own though...

Like any of these deals i dont see it as hassle free?. Well it is if you like to lose £3293. PLus you gotta worry about your mileage, the average mileage in the UK is 10,000 miles per year. So restricting you to 7,000 could likely potentially result in your catching the bus for the latter part of the year, defeating the point of having a car.

In my person opinion, i would get a TDI vw for £2000 ish, keep it MORE than 3 years and i doubt your repair/service bills will ever reach £1000s in this car in the years you own it.

Each to their own though.

To be fair it's a cracking deal for a city centre commuter car, assume it would cheap to tax and insure, wouldn't like to take this on a motorway but it's meant for short journeys at under £100 a month can you get better ?

Well, i have been using 14k to 19k cars as local run arounds and going out cars at the weekend. I then decided to purchase a cheaper car for local run arounds/school runs..etc. First bought a mini 1.4diesel for £1000, sold it 5 months later for £1100 spent £0 on it. Then purchased a vw tdi for £2100, had that for 2 months now and no issues, had one before for 3 years and like i say never had a single issues. Hoping to keep it for a good 3 years this one, and it should sell for the price i paid for it in 3 years time so no loss there.

These cars do not need expensive servicing like you suggest. They need a service every 2 years and the service parts are cheap for it. In fact, i service my own cars so the labour cost is zero once again. My friends vw tdi is on 269k miles, never had a issue. Mines 100k.

I can see the merit of both choices having only bought new once, 20 years ago. and have been a S/H sub £2000 guy since then , but as I mentioned in another thread my last 4 MOTs have cost me £500+ each, so this kind of deal is getting more appealing the more I think about it....

I had an old Toyota that cost £300 that I used to go 4 miles to work and then back every day for the last 7/8 years, which has cost me next to nothing, but was getting to the point where that was changing. I also have a top spec Mini countryman that I lease, and my wife drives that. Drove past a little peugeot 207 convertible in white in a garage by me a few weeks ago. Couple of years old, looked nice and shiny and was under £10k, and I just bit :-) So I've got both types of deal. I just like the peace of mind the lease gives me against costs on what could be an expensive car.

Was this brand new or pre-registered?

Can't see anything similar online, did you haggle for this or was it an offer advertised online?
