Good price, but AF is not a best one. No image stabilization - for a lens that's over 0.5kg heavy is not a best thing.

At full zoom (300mmm) you'd need to be down to about 1/500th of a second at least, or else using a tripod. Just sayin'.

Except Nikon DX-stamped lenses. At this end of the market, I'd suspect that's what most people would be changing from.

This lens probably sits in between the Nikkor 70-300G and the Nikkor 55-300. Speaking from experience I know that the 70-300 is about as sharp as a butter knife, I own one, so I would imagine at the price this is slightly better. But if I was buying a basic entry level tele-photo lens I would get probably be looking on the used market for the 70-300 tamron VC, as this is a great lens and is superior in optical performance and has image stabilisation and it can be picked up for around 150. I have used the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II, 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR, 500 f/4 and many other lenses and the tamron can keep up with them, this lens almost certainly won't be able to. Though saying that it is cheap and would make a good addition to an entry level kit or Christmas present for a Nikon user, heat.

Bought this a couple of month ago and have been really disappointed with it. Struggles with capturing detail and images appear soft.

Aaaahhhh, I bought a Nikkor 55-300 recently. This would've saved me quite a few quid.

Used to have the Canon version of this lens, it's not the fastest AF but OK for occasional use and good value at this price - obviously you get what you pay for and I cant afford L series

this was my first zoom lens when i started photography, for the price it's a very good entry lens, ideally don't go to max zoom (say 280-290mm or so) as it does soften slightly at full zoom. 'Macro' mode is very good, albeit not a true macro lens (fabs35 is a proper macro lens, but at a different price scale - lol)

I bought mine for £115 about 10yrs or so ago, from abroad too, so this is a pretty good price.

I have since upgrade to a 100-400mm L lens as i needed the extra reach, but can't compare on price though.

Remember, 70-300mm is a 35mm sensor rating. If you're using this on a DX camera, it'll function like a 105-450mm lens.
