Some may not know this but Amazon will donate 5% of sales to charity here in the UK to support our lifeboats. FIVE PERCENT! That is a lot on every order and better than Amazon tax dodging that amount away outside the country. Follow the link every time or bookmark it.

Bookmark the actual links when you land on the Amazon page, saves you an extra click.

They are not really giving the money to charity, they are just affiliate links, so the charity make a bit of money from your purchase.

Pretty much like all the links on this site are affiliate links, with the site making £1000's per day. I wonder how much HUKD give to charity?

Great that you can give some money to charity with amazon orders, just a pity you have to click through another site everytime, as like cashback it makes it very easy to forget so the charities don't get as much as they otherwise might, shame there isn't a option to just have it do it by default....

But heated for supporting charities.

They'll all work the same way and probably use the same thing behind the scenes. Only one will work at at a time, so if you regularly use multiples of Froggybank/Quidco/Amazon and want to choose one of them make sure you're using a cleaned browser and click through from the right place immediately before you buy or the reward could end up with any of them.

Thank you!

Also found giveasyoulive.com last week. Rates are pretty low but include all the big payers and seems to be on anything. Keeps track of what you've earned and goes to any charity registered with them of your choosing. Also has a handy chrome extension to remind you when shopping!

Amazon - 1%
John Lewis - 1%
M&S - 1%
Toysrus - 2.5%
Groupon - 7%
Tesco - up to £3

themadgoose

Let's break this down, shall we?

A worker on NMW working 15 hours a week for Amazon (or Tesco, or whoever) will pay NO National Insurance.Nor will Amazon pay any as his employer. That's why everyone gets a 15-hour contract or less.
VAT is a tax on consumption; Amazon do not pay it, the customer pays it and they pass it on to the taxman.
By warehousing, their Business Rates will be minuscule, significantly lower than a shop front on the high street.

The only bit you got right is that they will relocate here when we cut Corporation Tax, so they can reduce that part of their bill as well.

Nothing illegal about any of that, but virtually every part of your post was wrong and excused them for being pretty a pretty lousy (but highly efficient and very customer-focused) company.

Go moan at your politicians, not Amazon. The first requirement for a tax loophole to be legal is to disclose it to HMRC. So given HMRC are aware of the loophole Amazon are exploiting the real question is why aren't the people we elected to represent us doing anything about it? Lets face it, if any one of us could pay £20/year to reduce our National Insurance and PAYE by £1000/year you'd damn well do it wouldn't you?

Many charities do good work. Of course it's bad that in many cases 30%+ of their income from the public goes to staff wages and executives that have huge pay rates -- that's something the govt should be doing something about: make them publish/justify all salaries above £40k.

Don't forget to share it with the Macmillan nurse should you or any of your family suffer from cancer - or why don't you go down to your nearest hospice this Christmas and warn the people there how they're being scammed - I'm sure they'll agree the money would be put to much better use giving you a 5% discount on your purchases!

Nevermind the tax paying stuff. Old news. New news is Amazon fund organised crime by flogging bootleg recordings on their site - and refuse to remove them even after being directly linked to them. Yep "AmazonHelp" suddenly vanished after I pasted all the dozen or so links to the Prince bootlegs Amazon have illegally uploaded to their servers and even offer to gift wrap for you. They truly don't care about copyright law - let alone their drivers or a more morally proportionate level of corporation tax paid at UK rates rather than Belgian rates via pretending they have "no UK operations" (their football pitch sized warehouses obviously being just a mirage).

it can be very hard to justify giving small amounts to charity. How much of an impact can £5 per month make when the person that signed you up is earning £7.20 per hour? Large charities are not worthwhile donating to, in my opinion. Smaller charities generally yield more benefit in relation to your donation.

Kidstart is also a good one to cover Amazon (2%) and John Lewis (1.5%) that are not on cashback sites. The other rates don't tend to be as good as TCP/Quidco. The cashback must be paid into a child savings account or JISA/child trust etc.

16 Dec 16 1 #66
Well, controversially, the local Macmillan nurse I had to deal with when someone was terminally ill put me off ever donating to Macmillan. Her "help" was always far more of a hindrance and at one point even lied to the person who was ill in order to try and get them into a hospice that neither they nor we wanted them (and more importantly medically didn't need) . She was also constantly on "holiday".

For her, it was a job that paid far too well and allowed her to talk too much, without any hard work before retirement.

The district nurses did far more of a fantastic job, on less wage, and guess who funds them?
Additionally the MacMillan nurse also takes from the district nurses area budget when "offering to help you"under the guise of MacMillan, it's a completely unnecessary addition that is just draining money.

Hospital Hospice Macmillan services are usually locally funded though, and not part of the big Macmillan chain and it is well worth slipping them some money for the people who do require it as it does go direct to the cause.

Looking beyond even the front line staff for Charities though as well as the regular staff, will also hire many "poachers", sales people, on extremely high wages, flash company cars, and even more benefits designed to bring in more donations from the business sector.

People are raking in money off the back of people's donations. But people put up with it because it's seen as a necessary evil rather than what it is, a scam.

Love the sanctimonious crowd on HUKD whenever Amazon is mentioned.

Don't act like you wouldn't do the same given the opportunity. I know I would - I don't appreciate my hard work being used to fund stay-at-home layabouts, MP's living expenses (that we all have to pay AFTER tax), the redecorating of Buckingham Palace, and every other pointless waste of money that the government signs off. The NHS isn't dying because Amazon don't pay enough tax, it's dying because the government is letting it. There's money to do the Queen's house up, but not to make sure there's enough beds for sick people who pay tax? OK then. Don't kid yourself into thinking it's the NHS which benefits from your tax money.

Someone asked why our elected government don't do anything about the tax loopholes? Probably because they and their cronies benefit from it as much as anyone else. Their top donors are exploiting the same system and the government are not going to do anything to upset them.

By using this site, you're contributing to a tax-dodging entity, by the way.

I said nothing about them employing below NMW. Nor did I talk about Zero Hours contracts.

A large proportion of people who work for Amazon will earn less than the Primary Threshold of 8,060 and so will contribute nothing in National Insurance.

You started banging on about Amazon paying VAT, which suggests that you know nothing about the topic.

For the record, I'm not suggesting that Amazon is doing anything wrong; they are simply complying with the rules as set out by the government. But these jobs and others are heavily subsidised by the tax credit system and most of the people who work in them will get out of the system an awful lot more than they put in and the shortfall is not made up by Corporation Tax or Business Rates. Therefore, it is not too much of a stretch to suggest that the system is subsidising Amazon.

Either you go fishing and catch some fish, or you stay at home and catch none. In the first case, you have to spend some money (petrol, equipment, time) but you end up with fish. In the second case, you have spent no money but you've caught no fish.

Charity can't just sit and wait for your benevolence anymore. It has to be proactive.

Not bothered to read the link have you. 95% of staff work 40+ hours, starting at £7.15, so 95% will pay NI. Are you saying Amazon pay no VAT? They collect on the goods they sell obviously, but you think they avoid paying VAT. Best get onto HMRC.

Tax Credits are the responsibility of government not business. Don't pay them and business will have to pay more. Prices will rise, but you have the choice to buy or not. TC's are exploited by large and small businesses and by folk looking for minimum hours required.

"You've got to crack a few eggs to make an omelette." You've got to invest money (in sales staff or adverts) to generate more income than you would otherwise have without them. Did most of you know about all these charities listed? You probably knew of Macmillan because they advertise, and they make more money because of it. Besides, Amazon would pocket the 5% otherwise. Donating doesn't hurt if it's free on your part.

Wow, thanks Amazon! Pay virtually no tax for years, screwing up the NHS and other public institutions, and then once a year give a tiny percent of what you saved to charity to reassure everyone who continues to shop with you that they have a clean conscience. If you're so excited about this offer as to mark it hot, boycott Amazon until they pay their proper share. The next time you complain about a long NHS waiting list, lack of funding for local authorities, or the state of the roads in your area, maybe ask if you're at least partly responsible. Is saving a few pennies by shopping with these rogues really worth it?
jnigel26

Macmillan is not research.
I have had dealings with the largest two charities, and the waste is f. unbelievable! Charity begins at home. Support your local ones. Or the exceptional like epilepsy or lifeboats etc. Even the Air Ambulance had turmoil with the one called the Children's Air Ambulance, with the latter trying to get donations on the doorstep of other county air ambulance services. Most of it all stinks through simple wastage of money - because they get too much. Every family that has a cancer victim (there are a few of those, eh? - where is this f. cure!) immediately jumps on a bike or goes on a run to raise even more money. And what do we get? Bloody ancient poison chemo or radiotherapy - stuff from the dark ages. Cure? What, and put billion dollar pharma companies out of pocket, and masses of jobs. Don't hold your breath. Remember, very few get the 'I'm cured of cancer', the majority if they don't die get 'I'm a cancer survivor'. Yeah, and you can survive a car crash, but what sort of life remaining do you have? My neighbour has just died this last week. She managed just 4 years. 4 years of constant hospital visits, constant throwing up, hair loss, so bad she was terrified of going out and being sick. Poor sod.
Still ...she 'survived' cancer.

All companies pay those.

But not all companies pay corporation tax, or should i say, the correct amount of corporation tax relative to their UK sales.
By avoiding large amounts of corporation tax they have grown so big it is hard for others to compete with them.

Just because they pay large amounts of other tax doesn't mean they deserve a discount on corporation tax.
If anything they should pay a higher rate, with larger profits, just like personal tax bands.
